Our beach house is located directly across from Punalu'u Beach Park. Watch sunrise with a cup of Hawaiian-grown coffee; walk along the sandy beach or take a swim to start your day. From the front area of the house you look out at gorgeous views of the beach and reef beyond. The beachfront is protected by the outer reef; so the waves are never big along the shore, there are long stretches of white sand in both directions. Two double kayaks, snorkel gear and other beach equipment are at the house for your use. The reef is approximately 1/2 mile out providing a very large safe area for exploring. If the BIG surf is of interest to you, you will find it just north (20 minutes)- mostly in the winter months.
The single-family home was built in the 1940's- she shines with her history as well as updates. The bedroom has a queen size bed and there are two large daybeds in the front section of the house. All the furniture was chosen with style as well as RELAXATION in mind. The kitchen and dining area is well equipped, but if you don't feel like cooking there are several restaurants nearby. Just down the road is Ching's Family Store with homemade local snacks, basic groceries, and a lunch wagon serving shrimp. The house has two bathrooms; the second one on the back porch is perfect for a warm shower when you come in from the beach. The backyard is lush with a goldfish pond, stream and the gardens are planted with unusual tropical plants and flowers. The back porch is a great spot to unwind, grill some dinner and plan your next day's activities.
We, the owners, live on our flower farm near Chinaman's Hat- so you will have arrangements of fresh tropical flowers in your rental. Also wanting to 'show off' some other Hawaiian grown products; you will find an array of locally grown fruits, coffee, sugar and even North Shore grown chocolate to greet you on arrival.
The house is on the windward side of Oahu so the Koolau Mountains surround you and there are hiking trails and many beautiful beaches to discover. Punalu'u is a small beach town, not a well known tourist spot, a special peaceful spot close enough to activities and tourist attractions. Kualoa Ranch is 15 minutes away offering a variety of fun activities and Polynesian Cultural Center is 15 minutes the other direction. We look forward to welcoming you to the beach house, 'E komo mai'!

My husband and I live 15 minutes towards Kaneohe from the Punalu'u House. I recently retired from the University of Hawaii, as a research biologist. My husband is a retired director of a marine laboratory and is now raising and selling numerous varieties of exotic goldfish. Our oldest son is at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the Architecture Program and our youngest son at University of Oregon in Human Physiology. Our sons and I paddle 6-person outrigger canoes for Lanikai Canoe Club and also compete on OC-1 canoes. This is a photo of us jumping off the BIG rock at Waimea Bay - try it if you are brave!!
Kathleen McGovern-Hopkins purchased this house in 1987
I bought the house 25+ years ago as a residence. I have always loved the beach and Punalu'u, with Kahana Bay just down the road is one of the most beautiful areas on Oahu. Our family grew as well as our desire to be farmers so we moved to Hakipu'u which is 2.5 acres on the water.
Nice backyard to putter about.
Cozy house with lots of comfortable furniture.
Thank you Kathy for a wonderful stay at the Punalu'u Guest House. We appreciate the toys you left for our son as well as the fresh fruit and flowers. We greatly enjoyed our stay on Oahu and felt quite at home here. Our son had fun exploring the backyard and was very excited by the fish and birds. The beach house has everything we need for a comfortable cozy stay. We hope to make it back here again soon.

What a wonderful getaway! We had a similar experience to one of the other guests whereas our original trip was delayed due to 2 hurricanes passing over the Hawaiian Islands last August. Kathy was quick to offer us a full refund and the best of luck with whatever our alternative honeymoon plans ended up to be. Luckily, earlier this month, we were able to take the missed trip and rebook with Kathy. The house was quaint and charming and full of comfort items. Plenty of linens and towels and fun gear for picnicking, the beach or any other outdoor getaway we choose. The kitchen was fully equipped for making meals of any size which we made good use of along with the spotless grill out on the patio. We felt welcomed and comfortable as soon as we arrived by the basket of fresh fruit, beautiful flower arrangements and the fixings for the best cup of coffee we have ever had. Though its true the traffic can be heard the beautiful ocean view and tropical landscaped yard seems to help that aspect seem like a small issue. The Shrimp Shack and Keneke's are both in walking distance and have excellent food! They both offer very unique dining experiences and if you have a car North Shore Taco's is worth the 10 minute drive north. If we are ever blessed enough to get back to Oahu we will be looking to book with Kathy & Blue Ginger!
We just returned from a fantastic stay. A couple of things I'd like to highlight:
When Hurricane Ana caused our airline to cancel flights to Oahu, the property owner Kathy immediately agreed to let us change our dates at the last minute. No extra fees, no hassle.
We had a minor issue during our stay. Kathy helped us out immediately and everything was fine. (We have not experienced this level of assistance with other VRBO rentals.)
The house has a beautifully-landscaped yard, which is not apparent from the photos. The back yard backs up to a stream or some such body of water and there is also a koi pond. There are fish and flowers all over the place. It made a nice backdrop for some portraits of our little one.
Others have mentioned the highway noise. The traffic is louder than the ocean, but most places this close to the water on Oahu are on the same highway so it's going to be an issue if you want to stay on the water.
The beds were comfortable and there were loads of towels and linens. The washer and dryer on the back patio were full-size, worked well, and we used them daily.
There is no A/C but it didn't feel uncomfortable. The windows are all screened, so we just kept them open with the fans on.
My husband loved the food at the Shrimp Shack food truck down the street, but they close at 5pm, so try it out for lunch instead of dinner.
The owner was great, and very accommodating, no complaints there. Overall this rental just did not meet our expectations based on the amount of very positive reviews. The tips on where to go and what to do were great, and honestly better than expected. We went to, and loved Chings, it is just a cool place and the owners are great. The flower arrangements were incredible, very beautiful. The fruit was something my son raved about, especially the “banapples” as he called them. The location was awesome, very centralized and close to everything, especially the highway. As previously noted, it’s 36 feet from the highway, I believed it was closer,it’s 36 feet. Do not take this lightly unless you sleep through everything. Even with the earplugs we bought after the first night, sleeping was challenging, not to mention concerning since our 10 year old was sleeping in the next room by himself. It’s not just that it’s 36 feet, this is a very old home with shutter style windows that literally block none of the noise. Go stand 36 feet from any common highway, and that’s roughly the level of noise you will have to deal with. For me, this was a really hard thing to overcome since it never stops, 24 hours a day. Our other major issue was the bugs. Lots of ants, and the cockroaches would come out at night on the ceilings along with the geckos but we didn’t mind those so much and the owner told us to keep the lights on outside to minimize them. I didn’t realize until the last day there was ant spray, but then again I am on vacation.
Other random thoughts:
The kitchen is stocked fantastically well, the only thing I would add is a Teflon pan for eggs. Other than that: great cutlery, pots n pans, and plenty of baggies, paper towels, and the like. The BBQ is cheap, but is obviously well maintained and worked very well. The TV is nice, but you sit very close to it, the pictures do not let you see how close it is. The backyard is very nice, though not as private as it looks in the pics. The boogie boards were nice, not the cheapo ones. The snorkeling equipment was useless, we ended up renting. We really never spent any time on “our” beach which we were disappointed with, the reef really makes it hard to have fun. No AC, decide for yourself how you feel about that, I was promised that it would be cool at night, it was not.
Great house, great location, easy access to north shore, and easy access to south shore via quick routes to highways. Hated all the crowds in Honolulu and Waikiki. Loved the quiet peace of punaluu and north shore. Surfed at sunset beach, ate at sharks cove and hilawaia. Swam with sea turtles at laniakai. Defiantly great place to stay and wonderful person to deal with. Also on another note there was traffic on the highway but anywhere you stay on the island on the beach you are going to hear the traffic. It didn't bother us and the bushes and trees out front help keep the house more private and quiet.
Thanks again. Armas Family (Eugene, Oregon)
We truly enjoyed the ocean view and country feeling, having been up this way before, we loved the fact that trees, ocean and sand, instead of fancy hotels, crowded streets (Waikiki = Tropical NYC). If you're not a city dweller, the traffic may be upsetting, but being an orig NYorker, it became my alarm clock in the a.m. to watch the sunrises without even leaving the house if you didn't want to. If you a country person, you will enjoy the tropical camper type atmosphere, frogs, snails, beetles and geckos, not to mention the occasional heron visitor to the gold fish pond in the back. Birds are abound and laying in bed listening to their songs, so different than home is wonderful for bird lovers. Perfectly located for trips to the North Shore and Western Shore, (go to Dillingham Airport and go on a glider, you will love it!!!-after all, you flew all this way, why not) Roads can be intimidating late at night, so be careful, remember you're not a local and don't know the roads like they do, so keep the speed down. The house is outfitted with everything you want, there's another local supermarket up in Huualu (?) right before the Polynesian Cultural Festival, where the people are super friendly., not to mention all the little places to stop on the road, If you get a chance and want a nice wood carving, right before you or after you pass the Macadamia Farm is a wood sculpturer who will make items to order and others are there for you to buy. Kathy is truly Ohana!!!
I have to first apologize that it has taken me so long to add my review. Must be the snow we are experiencing now, that takes me to daydreaming of our last trip to Hawaii. The Blue Ginger House was our best find on the North Shore yet! All the comforts of home and then some. Missing our evenings on the porch and morning coffee in the lush backyard. Our family of 4 enjoyed ourselves so much, we've come home and told all our friends about this little gem. I also hope to get away again with just my husband & I. Kathy was great to work with and like many previous reviews, so understanding of all the possible things that could go wrong with travelling. Kathy and the Blue Ginger house are true ALOHA!
