Overview

Boothbay Harbor Estate Rental Photos and Description

5 bedrooms, 5 full, private baths, sleeps 11 in beds

Come away from it all....catch your breath.

Six miles from the bustle of Boothbay Harbor is a peaceful waterfront retreat, set among rolling fields, meandering stone walls and richly colored perennial gardens........imagine a place that evokes your fondest memories....and brings your vacation dreams to bold colorful life....

The estate consists of four New England-style buildings: Farmhouse and historic, 200 year-old Homer Jones barn; a charming garden shed; a renovated 1800s Cape and the Gallery Barn. The Farmhouse combines new convenience with historical flavor, with exterior porches and dormers, and a new deck with fabulous river views, all surrounded by gardens. Inside, the first floor holds a large, fully-equipped kitchen, dining area and Great Room, built and furnished with 200 year-old barn-boards and timbers. These rooms face the river, the sunsets and the pond. A cozy media room with the latest technology and a handicap-accessible King bedroom and bath face the courtyard. On the second floor are four additional bedrooms with private baths; two facing the courtyard, two facing the river, and a Gathering Room above the Great Room.

Wake to birdsong in the apple trees and early morning fog on the Back River....then make yourself delicious coffee and a hearty, healthy breakfast in the fully-equipped kitchen in the elegant Farmhouse.

Wander 15 acres of gardens and woodland trails....borrow an inflatable boat to paddle with local seals....enjoy games, ride bikes, meet our friendly bald eagles and other critters.....watch the Maine painted turtles or listen to frogs on the freshwater pond......wander the park-like grounds.....take a cool dip or a sail on the river....

Refreshed, venture out into the Boothbay region to join a tour boat to see whales or puffins, or to go lobstering, shop, view our many art galleries, try some local restaurants and generally have a memorable visit. The Coastal Maine Botanical Garden is only 4 miles away! Or try hiking at any of the 13 preserves within 10 miles of this home.

At the end of the day, imagine coming ‘home’ to a snack and drink on the front or new back deck....a good book in the hammock.....a sunset through the windows....and a long, delicious sleep in one of your five lovely bedrooms with private bath, colorful bedding, paddle fans, cable TV, WiFi.

Renewed again, live your bold and colorful life! Both buildings (the charming historic Cape and the elegant Farmhouse) are available year-round.

When the buildings are not rented to Homeaway.com guests, they are offered in the B&B style...in either case, it's the perfect destination for a personal retreat, family or school reunion, wedding or other gathering event. See more by googling Bold Colorful Life Estate and Retreat Center.

About Melissa Thornton, Owner

I’ve been saving for my ‘dream house’ for 40 years....and I fell in love with kayaking about 8 years ago. After a five year search through waterfront properties in CT, the Adirondacks, MA, NH and finally ME, this was the property that offered the combination of things I'd been seeking. And it was perfect for building vacation rentals so that the awesome environment could be shared.

The setting is idyllic with fields, woods, old stone walls, apple trees, lilac trees and many perennial gardens wandering down to the Back River. There are 15 acres of land, facing west for sunsets, on the protected waterfront of Maine and with a big freshwater pond and woodlands. The whole estate sits atop Maine ledge, which is sculpted to fall gently towards the water.

It's in an area where I am able to offer weekend and week-long retreats that combine personal growth, spirituality and 'back to nature' events, including hiking, paddling and exploring the nearby Botanical Gardens. And I want to share this beauty with as many people who love Nature and the wild, wonderful aspects of Maine as possible...so vacation rentals are the perfect answer.

Melissa Thornton, Owner purchased this estate in 2006

Why Melissa Thornton, Owner chose Boothbay Harbor

The Boothbay peninsula offers the perfect getaway. The area is naturally breath-taking, with forests and fields, farms and gardens, brash rocky coastline and gentle coves and lakes. Boothbay Harbor is a charming town with lots of engaging activities and it’s just six miles down the road. This is the area to go shopping, visit galleries and craft fairs, sample local fare at great restaurants, enjoy deep water activities like whale watching and lobster-boating.

And there are natural bonuses: 13 nature preserves for hiking within 10 miles---5 within 5 miles---one within 1/2 mile; a major Botanical Garden within 4 miles; kayaking possibilities in rivers and lakes and the Atlantic.

The Rockland/Camden area and Freeport shopping are within an hour's drive in either direction; and my favorite Maine park, Acadia National Park, is two plus hours away. Nova Scotia and Prince Edward island, both favorite parts of Canada, are nearby too……..

What makes this estate unique

The Bold Colorful Life Gallery offers colorful elegant jewelry, stunning natural photographs, and dramatic works of art in oil and pastel to our rental guests...when it's open. The Bold Colorful Life Estate is also a Retreat Center, so plan to join us for a Retreat for personal growth, renewal and spiritual centering...

The perfect Maine retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Hi Melissa,

We wanted to write and tell you that we enjoyed our second stay at your Bold Colorful Life estate immensely. We hope to return again and again.

Last time, we loved the Farmhouse…the spacious, comfortable rooms, the wonderful 200 year old barn timbers in the Great room and the amazing view of the river. Everything was even better than the website pictures promised. Our daughter wanted to repaint our whole house in brighter colors after seeing what you did with your Inn! We enjoyed doing our crafts and having meals around that huge table….more than enough room for our 11 person group. The breezes off the river and all the paddle fans cooled the summer sun and the eagles and blue heron were a delight. The kitchen was so well equipped…there wasn’t a recipe we couldn’t create...and we made quite a feast. Thanks for giving us the tour and for answering our questions and needs along the way…it was good to have you nearby when we wanted you.

This time, it was the historic Cape, for our smaller group. Again, the colorful and whimsical rooms were SO comfortable and we got caught up on sleep…so important for our vacation. Our daughter brought a friend this time and they loved the cozy bunks and their own private bath. We love your wildflowers and the emerald green lawns between them, and we love all the stone benches and hammocks, in perfect spots for resting. We didn’t see the eagles, but loved the bullfrogs and the last of the tree frogs around the pond. Thanks again for giving us the perfect spot to gather with family members, catch up with each other and with rest, enjoy the beauty of waterfront Maine and of the Boothbay peninsula. We recommend the gardens, lighthouse tours, nearby hikes and downtown waterfront restaurants to your other guests. See you next year!

Owner's Response: We love the fact that each group arrives with a different set of goals for their visit…some come to explore and immerse themselves in the adventures of the area….some come to relax and recover and get themselves onto ‘Maine time’….others come to balance both…hustle and bustle some days and simply rest and relax the others. This was a group intent on deep rest and deep connection with each other…they were set to enjoy everything they came across…and we love it when a group falls in love with the site, makes it their own space and doesn’t feel the need to leave. This group immersed themselves in the quiet and beauty of Mother Nature…on the site and in the area…they enjoyed every nook and cranny of both of the buildings and of the estate, during their two visits …they cooked and feasted and wandered the peninsula a bit and then came ‘home’ again…and at the end of their visit, went on with their lives fueled with ‘bold and colorful’ energy. We look forward to having them return..they are part of our ‘greater family’.

Perfect in Every Way

  • 5 of 5

We loved our visit. We were in town for our daughter's wedding, and needed a house that slept 10 people. This met our need in every way. The beds were comfortable and there is enough space that we did not bump into each other.

The home is in gorgeous shape, and Melissa was available when we needed her for any questions. She was most gracious and always helpful.

Since there was still snow on the ground we did not explore outside, but the views from the house were gorgeous. It was an A+ for customer service. I would definitely recommend the property.

The Best Get-Away of All!!

  • 5 of 5

The first time I saw Melissa's fantastic get-away. It took my breath away!!! It is absolutely gorgeous, totally comfortable and situated in the most glorious surroundings. It has everything that anyone would hope for and it has the most friendly and accommodating owner. Melissa is as charming as her gorgeous and beautiful estate .. which is really a "Home Away" for everyone. The entire area of Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor has a wealth of interesting, fascinating and relaxing things to do and Melissa is simply super at guiding her guests to all the things that she knows would be most wonderful for their relaxing holiday..

Beautiful retreat

  • 5 of 5

Melissa,

As you remember, seven of my family had a magnificent week in the Farmhouse four years ago. It was perfect for us, whether we wanted to spread out and find cozy nooks, or all be together in that beautiful (perfectly equipped!) kitchen or out on the deck with that long view over the meadow and down to the river. Some of us ambled down the path and sat above the water, under the pines. We loved it!

This year, after an exhausting, tough time at work, the one place in the world I wanted to be was Bold Colorful Life. More than anything, I wanted a room in your sweet, classic Cape Cod with the daylilies out front. Though I loved the expanse of the Farmhouse, this time what I really needed was grounding and nurturing, and the Cape was where I wanted to be. Alas, it was rented for the week I had in mind!

I still crave time in that charming Cape and I’ll have it one of these years! But you did a wonderful, nurturing thing for me, instead. You made space for me in the Farmhouse again. You gave me the same room I had four years ago, supplied the fridge with all manner of breakfast sustenance, and made space for me to heal. In my mind, I can still go back to all the mornings I made my coffee and drank it on the deck, looking out over the wildflowers and granite benches on the path down to the river. You are stewarding a truly beautiful expanse of land.

And from Bold Colorful Life, I made many great forays! You’re so close to the Coastal Botanic Garden, which is a gorgeous place to ramble, with a delightful outdoor restaurant and really good food. At your suggestion, I wandered down to Fort William Henry and Pemaquid Light (climbed it dizzily to the top). On the way, I found excellent fried clams at the exact restaurant where you said they’d be.

Melissa, the week was exactly what I needed. Thank you. Thank you for all the work you’ve done to find and make this beautiful place what it is, for the peace and well-being of so many people.

Till next time, warmest wishes,

Bev

Charming, fun and relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

This is the perfect location for a girls' reunion! Eighteen of us had a wonderful time enjoying all that the area offers--spent a gorgeous afternoon at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, strolled the shops of Boothbay, feasted on a catered lobster bake arranged by the gracious owner, Melissa. The bedroooms at the Inn are bright and comfortable, breakfast was generous and perfect (fresh wild blueberries!), lots of room to spread out and enjoy this beautiful property. Right on the river--some of us kayaked, others just enjoyed sunning on the deck. The owner is an artist, and there is even a gallery where many of us purchased one-of-a-kind stone jewelry. All in all, a really great stay!

Very clean and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We were 5 couples visiting for Labor Day weekend (3 nights) and we all had more than enough room to amble around in this very spacious and homey farm house. Melissa is very gracious and accommodating. I most enjoyed sitting on the large deck in back which has a view of the Back River. The house is located in a quiet neighborhood and is less than a five minute ride to Boothbay Harbor. Thank you Melissa!
