About Brian: General Manager

I have been a fan of the Caribbean for most of my life. When I came to St. John in the late 90's, I knew this was the place. I still feel that way.

We love and care for Mooncottage as it is more than a just rental property, it is a labor of love--and our greatest pleasure are satisfied guests.

On the main Mooncottage website (just search Mooncottage on Google or Trip Advisor) you will find countless testimonials from people who have experienced Mooncottage as a rare piece of heaven.

I have an entertainment and marketing background -- and share my time between NYC and St. John (the ultimate expression of beautiful extremes)

Brian: General Manager purchased this villa in 2005

Why Brian: General Manager chose Coral Bay

St. John in my estimation is the most beautiful and pristine of islands in the Caribbean or anywhere in the world ... as well as one of the most natural and relaxing. You can go out in the day or evening and feel safe anywhere. The island itself is 2/3 National Park - meaning the beaches and trails are always maintained and kept clean and free of vendors. Mooncottage is surrounded by undeveloped land on 3 sides and has only one villa far below to call it's neighbor. We also rent and manage this villa as well so you really DO know your neighbors. Nature is everywhere and the trade wind breezes day or night are soft and magical. There is only ONE Mooncottages.

What makes this villa unique

- Unequaled Privacy

- Quiet and Natural

- Easy access to Restaurants & Beaches

- Minutes from all of St. John's legendary beaches

- Located at the top of the property - no road noise or intrusions

- Tropical gardens

- Love nest

Guestbook comments from the manager

Mooncottage is special in every way. Our most recent visit (March, 2013) was our fourth or fifth (we've lost count) and it will not be our last.

We have rented several villas on St. John and elsewhere in the Caribbean, including on Nevis and St. Barths. Considering all factors (convenient location, friendly people, the National Park beaches, restaurants, good value), St. John is the best and for a couple, Mooncottage is the best of St. John.

Brian Vandenbroucke's seven year project has been spectacularly executed, down to every detail. The view from 700' up is mesmerizing, facing east/southeast over Hurricane Hole, Sir Francis Drake Channel on to Virgin Gorda to provide great light, but also protection from the heat of the late afternoon.

The creative asian-influenced design and warm woodwork are pleasing to the eye and the lighting system adds to the mood. There is total privacy. With a well-equipped modern kitchen and other amenities it is tempting never to leave the cottage. But the beaches beckon, an average of about 15 minutes away. Our favorite is Jumby, on the North Shore.

While the road up may be adventurous for some, recent improvements make it very easy, even returning from a candlelit dinner at our favorite St. John restaurant, Sweet Plantains, nearby.

We have been fortunate to be able to enjoy Mooncottage almost every winter and are already considering our next visit!

this is our second time to stay at mooncottage and our third time to st john. the first time we came here, i researched villas and based on the reviews and amazing photos i booked mooncottage though i wasnt really sure what it would be like (sometimes photos can be misleading). well....the truth is that nothing you see online can prepare you for what you'll experience when you first set foot in this place. photos alone do no justice to the glory of this place. the cool trade winds in the evening, the moon rising over tortola, the sweet smells of the forest around you, the view...ah the's just not the same in a photo. when you wake up in the morning and lift your head - you look just across the pool to a view of the sea and the island of Tortola and you hear only the sounds of nature. also, every little detail has been considered...and if something that you need is missing, there's a good chance Brian will find it for you. We're about as anti resort as you can get....we like privacy and charting our own path when we travel. Mooncottage is completely private but still close to several good restaurants and two nice grovery stores...and if you're into cooking as we are the kitchen is well equipped with all the hardware you need! we have stayed at one other villa near mooncottage that was pretty nice...and a bit cheaper....but you get what you pay for....and we've decided that we'll never stay anywhere else when we come to st john.

Paradise in st. john

Moon cottage was one of the most special settings for a vacation that my wife and I ever had. We have traveled to many wonderful settings but there is something about moon cottage that is so unique.

From the first moments of communicating with Brian (owner), I was assured that MC would be the right place to spend our holiday. He provided great travel and on island information.

The days of exploring st. John were easily topped by our late afternoon swims and evenings spent relaxing on the MC porch. All of the furnishings were extremely luxurious and provided the backdrop for the ultimate relaxation experience. I still fine myself day dreaming of the view from MC while at my desk.

Thanks brIan and MC for making our st. John vacation wonderful!

Heaven on Earth

Our day of travel is ridiculous coming from Minneapolis. We started our 17 hour day flying from MSP to Miami and then Miami to St. Thomas. We rented our car on St. Thomas and drove like crazy to make it to the car ferry in Red Hook - although that, in itself, is an ordeal, they know what they are doing. We headed across unusually rough seas (locals confirmed this, as well as the super smooth return trip) and were greeted on the other side by the house manager. We followed her through the winding & steep roads of St. John to a lovely market at the bottom of the hill from the home - there we picked up food with our iPhone flashlights since power was lost on the island (we were told this happens about 3 times a year, but only stays off for 30 minutes max). As we started the drive up to Mooncottage, I thought, "what have we done?" We got up there, as the sun was setting and tried to do a walk-through and understand everything with no power. After the house manager left, we grabbed a glass of wine, lit candles, and sat down on the veranda, EXHAUSTED. Anxiety was starting to set in and I thought, "what happens if the power doesn't come back on?!?" As we sat there, quiet, both wondering what decision we had made, we were inundated with the sounds of tree frogs chirping (beautiful sound). All of a sudden the lights popped on, the fans started to swirl and we did a happy dance.

With all that, I can honestly say that I would do DOUBLE the travel to return to Mooncottage. It's better than the pictures. At least 100 times during the week, my husband said, "We have NEVER stayed in a place that we had a tough time leaving for the beach." Each day, we'd have breakfast and decide which beach to go to and we found ourselves dragging those mornings later and later (to the point we couldn't find parking for beaches a few of the days). This place is PURE magic. It is so private. The view is unreal. The attention to detail through every facet of this house is simply remarkable. You can FEEL the love and energy that was put into this tranquil home. This is a positive place. It was the best week of our lives. We never wanted to leave - we ate several dinners in, too, simply because we adored being there & with each other so very much.
I can't say enough about this magical place that sits high atop the mountain, looking out on east end and Tortola ... there truly are no words, one must simply go to experience heaven on earth.

Paradise found!

I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical about all the 5 star reviews. Possible? I was planning a last minute vacation, and we were torn between booking a resort or a villa. We didn’t have a lot to choose from, 3 villas and the Ritz Carlton on St. Thomas. We decided to go the villa route, and though Mooncottage was booked, the photos compelled us to reach out to Brian anyway. As our luck would have it, the existing reservation canceled just prior to our booking elsewhere. It turns out procrastination isn’t always bad -- this ended up being the opposite of a resort vacation, in the most perfect way.

We’ve rented many lovely vacation homes, and none have so perfectly suited their place and purpose. Renting vacation property on-line can be tricky. Either the photography over promises, or the house under delivers. In this case, I don’t know that one hundred photos could actually convey how picture-perfect this house and location really are. The house feels very remote. The rough dirt road (a shocker the first time you drive it) makes you feel like your are going someplace very exotic. This house offers a unique indoor/outdoor experience that make each equally enjoyable. We drove all over the island, and couldn’t find a better view, much less one you could enjoy in complete seclusion. Other reviews mentioned lighting, which I hadn’t considered before this. At night the house and gardens are transformed to a setting that is very dramatic and resort-like. Instead of the property going dead-dark after sunset, it is illuminated in a way creates beautiful garden vignettes that can be enjoyed indoors or out. The walls of the living area are almost 50% open (screened sliders) so you don’t have to turn your head very far to catch a view -- day or night. I had reservations about mosquitos, and not having AC or cable, which proved to be unfounded. We were as happy to return home as we were to go to the beach.

Though on the remote end of the island, it’s a short drive to the beaches, and the small grocery store at the bottom of the hill has most things. We ventured to Cruz bay to eat a couple of times and rent a dinghy -- but really preferred the quiet of Coral Bay. If your an avid snorkeler, you might bring your own or rent. The gear at the house is fine, but the fins are fairly small. There were plenty of towels, and it was nice to have beach chairs, coolers and a beach bag to haul your stuff with.

I would gladly skip the room-service if I had the opportunit
