NATURE LOVERS PARADISE YOUR OWN ISLAND

West Gardiner Cabin Rental Photos and Description

1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, sleeps 3

Your own island! Who has not dreamed of having one? This little gem of an island can be yours for a week. Little Diamond Island is a 1/4 acre island located in Lake Cobbossee in West Gardiner Maine. Just 20 minutes from the capital city of Augusta you are close to restaurants and shopping but in a setting that is private and close to nature.

Little Diamond Island in Lake Cobbossee is a unique lake front vacation rental. Rustic 3 room cabin with lake views from every window. The lake is just steps away in any direction. Sandy bottom swimming areas and the lake is great for boating, canoeing, kayaking or jet skiing.

Island vacationing is not for everyone. If you love camping (not the same as RV'ing) you will love this. It is a lot like camping except you have a real bed to sleep in. Rustic in nature there is no electricity or running water. We do provide a composting toilet, propane stove, refrigerator and solar campers shower.

This is a peaceful spot for anyone who loves nature. Except for the occasional boat the only sounds you hear are the young osprey begging for food in the nest above the cottage and the mournful cry of the loons as they float past the island. You can see nesting osprey, pileated

Unforgettable Experience

  • 5 of 5
We had the most amazing time on the island. Being completely surrounded by nature was an unforgettable experience. The island has all the necessities, we were actually surprised that we literally had all we needed during our stay. I'm not even the "outdoorsy" type but I felt more than comfortable at this property. Everything is as described and our trip was better than we could've imagined. Would absolutely love to come back!

Excellent Experience...Again!

  • 5 of 5
This was our 2nd summer in a row on Little Diamond Island, and it was even better this time.

Staying on the island is just the perfect experience for anyone who wants a outdoor/nature experience without having to sleep in a tent. The privacy you have here is really un-matched and makes it perfect for anyone looking to get away for EVERYTHING. The island is located in Wentworth Cove, which means it is out of the way from the main part of the lake. This means there's not a ton of traffic in the surrounding waters, so it remains peaceful and private. Occasionally there would be a small fishing boat or two near by, but they didn't stay for long.

The weather was much better for us this year (it was rainy/overcast a lot last year). It was sunny each day and there was a beautiful breeze for two out of the 3 days (I think it was left over from the hurricane). The swimming here is excellent for anyone who enjoys lake swimming. The water is super clean, refreshing and not too cold. I did all of my swimming right off the deck. It is a rocky area, so swimming shoes make it much easier. But this area is deeper and an overall nicer place to swim in my opinion.

As night falls, the island becomes so peaceful and romantic. Oil lamps and candles provide awesome natural light that turn the cabin into such a relaxing place. Perfect for reading a book, playing a game, or whatever else you want to do to pass the time. The moon was bright while we were there, and the reflection off the lake was stunning.

Overall, Little Diamond Island is a very special experience for anyone looking for a quiet getaway surrounded by nature. It is the perfect mix of nature and home. If you're looking for privacy, outdoor fun, nature and quality time with whoever you are vacationing with, this is a great place for you. My fiance and I will definitely be returning next year, and hopefully each summer after that.

Skeptical? A tiny bit. Thrilled at the outcome? Beyond thrilled.

  • 5 of 5
Spent a lot of time wondering if this would be the right fit. I'm not an avid outdoorsman, so I guess I was a bit skeptical. It was beyond perfect!!

LOCATION: Lake is HUGE. Island is far enough out that you feel snug and secure in paradise, but not so far that you worry about getting back. Paddle from the mainland dock to the island dock took 5-7 minutes. The lake is quite shallow in places.

Island feels perfectly sized. Large and mid-sized trees mixed in with smaller new growth feels like you're in the woods. Views from every part of the cabin & island are spectacular.

I was here the week before July 4th, but surroundings are very quiet. Power boats stay way way out. Once dusk comes, the ospreys, loons, and frogs take over with their twilight songs. When the wind was right I could hear music coming from the boys' camp across the way on Fri & Sat night (never past 10 pm).

ACCOMMODATIONS: Cabin is very clean and exceeded my expectations! Actually looks like the photos inside! Very impressed with how cozy and clean the place was. Decks and picnic table were great.

Original part of the cabin (now the kitchen) is an architectural treasure. Takes you back to the 1940s without feeling dirty or old in any way. A wonderful throwback. Bedroom and living room are both additions to the original structure, and they are light and airy. Bed was surprisingly comfortable and ventilation throughout is perfect. There was always a breeze.

Plates, glasses, paper goods, bug spray, cleaning supplies, first aid kit, etc. all in ample supply. Basic cooking ingredients too! Three very nice oil lamps work perfectly one in each room, and battery lanterns are also on hand.

The bathroom/shed/outhouse? Astonishingly clean and odor free! This was one aspect I was initially hesitant over. Out the bedroom slider, down the stairs, about 8 steps and you're there. Very doable for 5 days.

Canoeing and swimming here is outstanding. If you're going to walk in the water, definitely have something on your feet that is secure (sandals kept getting pulled off, as the sand in the lake is squishy!)

NEARBY: The island is so perfect I didn't need to leave much! Gardiner has a nice wine bar, steakhouse, homemade donuts (Frosty's), and supermarket/drug store on the edge of town. Hallowell has a great Thai/sushi place (Cafe de Bangkok) and lovely shops. Skip Augusta - nothing of note to see really.

One of the best vacations I have been on. Thank you!!

Amazing experience

  • 5 of 5
This was truly one of the best vacation experiences we've had. It is magical to canoe (or swim) out to the tiny island - and even more magical to take the canoe out on the lake at night when the stars are out and the moon is strong. The cabin is quaint, comfortable, and charming and, above all, peaceful. We had a wonderful time canoeing around the lake during the day and coming home to relax on the porch. It is in such a beautiful location and there really is something magical about being on the tiny island without anyone else. We would love to come back and highly recommend this to anyone visiting the area.

A wanderfull cabin in an amazing surrounding

  • 5 of 5
The cabin was so nice, clean, very useful even without electricity and running water. The island is so cute. We spend 2 days paddle around thanks to the canoe... swimming in the lake and just enjoying the surrounding. Just an amazing stay.

Cozy little cottage!

  • 5 of 5
My boyfriend took me here for the weekend for a fishing trip and we had an awesome time! The cabin is so adorable and the pictures just don't do it justice! The cabin is so clean and very well maintained. The best part is being on your own island and having 360 views of the waters. Also the lake is great for fishing! we can't wait to come back next year, we very highly recommend staying here!
