Captain Albert Tropea, Jr

Once worked with Proctor and Gamble families and the Helene Curtis Company as personal sailing captain. While working in Key Largo with a maintenance company taking care of all hospitality related needs from the homes, to designing landscapes, maintaining yachts, Captain Albert realized that the missing component in vacations in the Florida Keys was the boatel or boat and breakfast style of adventure vacations. Captain Albert decided to bring the experiences he had with the very wealthy to the hard working families who longed for the sailing experience with their spouses, friends or families. Captain Albert has sailed all over the world from being a Everglades then Bahamas Guide,to sailing the Greek Islands and a number of foreign countries. Let Captain Albert or his hand picked captains and trained mates show you the wonders of what makes the area around the Florida Keys so unique. Our captains know many places that the big 40 plus person boats cannot get to and do not know about. Sail with a crew attending your needs, feel free to be involved with sailing or lifting the sails. It is the goal of the Company to have you experience direct contact with the wind, the sails and the sea with confidence if you one day want to buy your own boat. Feel like you own the boat by telling our crew what you wish to have for an experience whether it is more swim/snorkeling, fishing, sailing. You are the one in charge as if you own the sailboat.

Albert Tropea purchased this yacht in 1995

Key West boasts over three million visitors a year and for good reason. All year round the temperatures are milder than anywhere else even in the summer. Winter is non existent; come down and thaw out with us for your winter retreat. There are only a few days in January where the chill in the air will be down to a low of 45 for night time temperatures, high of 65 only a few days in January the rest of the year is spring like temperatures. Even the summers the highs are rarely above 92 degrees and nights and ocean breezes keep it mild at nights. 'Gonna go where the sun keeps shining, through the pouring rain' was a line from the song written about Key West! Bring your summer dream weddings and honeymoon plans to us and we help you design a special memory. Key Wes is second only to Las Vegas for easy relaxed weddings in a variety of settings especially on board your own sailing vessel, married next to a famous Key West Sunset. Since it takes from 17 to 25 years to get one of the coveted Key West Bight docks, we just recently added a third boat after waiting almost 20 years. It is well worth the wait, with a short three block stroll to Mallory Square nightly art festival and the famous bars and restaurants along the Duval Street district. There are museums and other attractions close by and the Ft. Meyers Ferry Boat is just a few yards from our E Dock behind the Wyland Murial at 201 William. The Historic Seaport has shopping along the board walk with many restaurants to choose from. Still funky and fun, Schooner Wharf Bar, Turtel Kraals and many old local's favorites still at historic seaport after many years with live music all the time. Restaurant near the Ferry boat has live music, outdoor dining and you are welcome to use the pool when you purchase your lunch or drinks with them like many pools in town. So much to do and see, park your car and bike or walk almost everywhere. Or take a taxi from the airport. Enjoy a simpler life Key West living.

Unique benefits to staying aboard a sailing vessel is to enjoy the life the way it once was in the historic seaport once known for fishing, conch farming and shrimp or lobster fishermen. Feel like you own the boat you stay aboard and then go sailing for your stay aboard and sail charter or choose to take off completely away from it all for as many days you wish to charter with meals and crew providing everything you need. It's your dream, why not live it out this time? You can stay in a hotel or bed and breakfast room anywhere any time; have it all old Key West style and feel like an explorer with family and friends or that significant other. Weather is usually mild no matter what time of the year. Sailing with our crew is safe, learn a few sailing tips, see wild life like dolphins, fish and sea turtles in their natural habitat. Relaxed style of vacationing, pack light, sandals, shorts and swim wear and a few t shirts; bring a light jacket and a pair of casual long pants for nights or when at sea. Bring a pair of good walking shoes, no need to bring heels as you will want to explore and walk as much as you feel comfortable to see the nuances of Key West. While at sea 24 hours, we provide meals and non alcohol drinks of course, with snorkel gear and fishing gear, no need to pack these items. When you take the helm once the captain gets you safely out of the harbor and sets a course, the feeling of adventure will sweep you away. Low tech environment, great for families to take a break from electronics even if for one day, there is so much to see at sea! Earn a 2 hour sunset sail for 2 nights stay at the docks for example. When you watch the sails unfurl, the feeling of exhilaration is exciting and deeply satisfying while living a lifestyle vacation for your special Key West vacation. The weather is usually ideal whether the weather is cold or hot where you are, it is perfect most days in Key West. Call and customize your special destination vacation.

Best time ever in Key West after 40 years of visiting Key West

  • 5 of 5
I am a vistor of the Keys for more than 40 years and staying with KW Sailing Adventure is the best. You get the best of everthing Key West and it´s surrounding seas have to offer. Old Town Key West, the Hemingway house, the Mel Fisher museum, the Aquarium, the arquitecture, the ambiance, Historical bars and eateries, great shopping and Maollory Docks with it´s sunset show. And this is just the beginning. You get to enjoy the real reason we come to the Keys, the ocean. You get to enjoy the true wonder of the keys on and below the sea, sleep under the stars, eat FRESH seafood with pampering second to none. I will not stay anywhere else.

Love the lifestyle

Staying on the sailboat in the heart of key west is probably the best way to stay on the island and best ways to see key west...I have stayed on this boat for at least 10 weeks or more of my life and couldn't say enough positive things about the Captain and crew. Its like coming home everytime I step aboard and go grab a cocktail at The Schooner Wharf!!!

Worst travel experience...ever.

  • 1 of 5
This experience was a disaster from the moment we got to Key West. We (fam of 4) arrived at sunset with minimal verbal directions to locate the specific boat on our own and left after a frustrating five hours of trying to figure out how to locate and turn on working lights, turn off the a/c (it was 50 degrees), find the heaters, run the electrical panel, locate outlets to plug in heaters that would trip the circuit breaker and locate the off-ship bathrooms...etc... Then there was the overwhelming fuel stench throughout both cabins. That's a good sign, right? The last straw was the cockroach -roughly the size of a lime- totally ended it for my daughters. Though they really did try to make the most of it- suggesting that we take turns dropping things from the hatch to see if they could kill it. We had no choice but to leave. Here's the best part, we leave a "we're outta here" message on the emergency line around midnight (hey, the alleged Captain needed his beauty sleep, you know) and then I get a voice mail the next day a bit before noon, "We're down at the boat with all your $200 worth of food ready to go on a perfect day alright. We'll just wait for you. I don't know where you are." Lol. Really? Let's just say it was quite obvious that he had done this before. Got to give this alleged Captain props, it's a great way to make money off of unsuspecting people.

For anyone considering this adventure, keep in mind that chartering a private ship is not regulated by anyone. I contacted the city of Key West to file a complaint and they kindly reminded me that a local municipality only has authority over land based rentals. Until I personally take legal action against the company, they get to keep my money. Other things I learned from this experience was to research advertising claims- like CNN recently rating them top 10 in some category- and that positive reviews are all too easy to invent. Good luck. And I give it one star because I learned valuable, albeit costly, life lessons.

Owner's Response: If you are looking at this review please look at our many 5 star ratings. These folks must have been ill or otherwise disposed as they arrived very late in the evening, after 10:30 pm instead of before sundown as they said and admited to making several stops at local haunts down the Fl Keys on the way. For many reasons we do not accept late check in's without special arrangements.
They were not communicating adequately. Our phones are on from 9 AM to 9 PM 7 days a week and later. They told us hours before they arrived they would be in before sunset. That is why the air conditioner was on and the lights off. We were concerned without a call something terrible may happened so we stayed up late waiting for news.
An earlier call may have solved many issues. Our boats are backed in with the name clearly displayed. They sounded confused about finding the right boat. The address and slip # were given to them plus our phone was on after 9 pm as they were almost five hours late.
They mentioned that the land based facilities were pastel yellow instead of pastel pink as pictured. The building was just painted with a sign and they showered.
Normally a crew member meet the guests at the sailboat and helps with check in. Without notice of this made it impossible. They spoke of roaches. Not true. We responded immediately since the vessels are under the care of a local pest control. The Pest control company went to the vessel the next morning and found no signs of bugs of any kind. They sprayed anyway and no bugs were found any day after alive or dead.
Their notice of leaving was at 1 PM to Voice mail, and did not post until later in the morning. They were to call in the morning as their 1 AM message said but no call was made to us.
Groceries ordered by them were purchased for the charter as they had planned an overnight on an Sailing Excursion. They accepted the boat and could saved all of this expense and the effort of 4 people, captain, mate, shopper and make ready person.
As for a refund, it is decided by the banks. They decided in our favor and not their own client. For whatever reason on what is considered a holiday in Key West St Patricks Day, the clients including two teens must have been drawn to the downtown.
Normally we do not give cash but give voucher refunds that may be resold. This charter cost additional dollars and yet they were offered voucher. When we emailed them we felt something else occured that had nothing to do with our business.

Fabulous experience

  • 5 of 5
The boats were clean and comfortable even for our large group! The Captains and the first mates were knowledgeable and professional but also a heck of a lot of fun! They allowed us to take the helm if we desired or just kick back and relax. The Mates served cocktails, cheese and crackers and also cooked dinner and cleaned the galley! It was a stress free and fun packed adventure!

A MUST DO for your bucket list.

  • 5 of 5
Our hats go off to Captain Albert and Ronda for being the perfect hosts. On very short notice, Captain Albert arranged accomodations for my wife and I to stay on one of his fleet of yachts overnight. We found the living quarters on "Moondance" in perfect order awaiting our arrival including the ship's air conditioning system greeting us on a hot, muggy day. Location was perfect with nearby parking and within a short walk to all the major attractions Key West has to offer. We also availed ourselves of recommendations made by Captain Albert to a couple of excellent restaurants (LaTrattorra in Key West and the Square Grouper on Cudjoe Key) which were truly exceptional in quality, location and service. Because this was for us a spur-of-the-moment overnight drive to Key West from central Florida, the only thing we regret was not having the time to take part in one of the many adventureous cruises Captain Albert is famous for in the area of the Florida Keys, the Carribbean and throughout the many places Captain Albert has ventured on the world's seas. That will have to wait another year for us but If a unique and exciting family vacation is on your agenda, and even if it isn't, you really should consider Captain Albert's charters if you want to return with memories that will last a lifetime.
