Dick Bell purchased this cottage in 1996

Why Dick Bell chose Charlottesville

We built Afton Cottage in 1996 as a rental unit. In October 2007 we decided to market it as a vacation home on line through VRBO. Since that time, we have had over 250 reservations by wonderful folks, many of whom have returned multiple times.

What makes this cottage unique

The great appeal of Afton Cottage is its location. It is located in a beautiful area and it is convenient to Charlottesville, Monticello, Staunton, & Wintergreen.

Close proximity to the Shenandoah National Park, Appalachian Trail, 10+ wineries and 3 breweries make it an ideal home-away-from-home for hikers, bikers, sightseers and wine and craft beer afficianados.

The privacy and tranquility afforded by the cottage make it a wonderful getaway for those seeking a place to merely relax and unwind. It is a favorite of writers.

Charming and Cozy

  • 5 of 5
We rented this cottage when attending a wedding at Veritas Winery in Afton. The owner was extremely pleasant throughout our entire experience (booking, pre travel communication, and during our stay). The cottage was exactly as depicted, except better because photos cannot capture all the charm of the cottage. We were thrilled with out experience and highly recommend this rental to other visitors.

Great Family Area Visit Launch Site - Or Just Destination

  • 5 of 5
We ended a road trip with a week at Afton Cottage. Having stayed in the Charlottesville area in the past, we had an idea of the places we were going to visit and from the description the cottage seemed like a great fit. It absolutely did not disappoint! It was roomy enough for our family of 4 plus our dog, but still felt cozy. It was well-equipped with all the basics. The laundry room and having plenty of linens and towels for everyone were definite perks - as anyone who has traveled with small children can appreciate! Dick has a binder, which I'll call "the book." It has information on the area from some basics to you-didn't-realize-you-wanted-to-know-until-you-did pieces of info. We visited Monticello, Michie Tavern, Carter Mountain, Blue Mountain Brewery, Devil's Backbone Brewery, the Cidery, a handful of vineyards, Tuckahoe Antique Mall (very reasonable BTW) and did some hiking in Shenandoah and a cute little walking trail in Nellysford. We also visited several of the local shops for produce/local items. Critzer has great produce and fresh eggs and the woman during my visit was super friendly. The heirloom tomatoes are amazing. They're literally across from Blue Mountain Brewery. Definitely worth the quick trip. During the rainy days we were content to stay in and watch movies. On nice days, the deck was perfect for deer watching, coffee in the morning and stars in the evening. Dick popped by to introduce himself and to answer any questions, but didn't impose. Overall, it is a great little retreat! Even our dog had a great time - kicked off by the complementary dog treats waiting for her on arrival!

P.S. A previous reviewer mentioned the knives. It seemed like a random comment to me at the time, but boy will you enjoy them if you do any of your own meal prep!

Delightful find!

  • 5 of 5
The Afton Cottage was a delightful find and perfectly suited our needs for a weekend get away from Washington DC and a home a way from home to connect with our family! The cottage is lovely, tidy and very well equipped for the most comfortable and relaxed stay. We enjoyed cooking on the deck and found the kitchen to be very well equipped. We will definitely consider returning to Afton Cottage to explore more of this beautiful area.

Great little house in the woods!

  • 4 of 5
My mother and sister and I stayed at the house last weekend and had a wonderful stay! We slept with the windows open and heard the crickets chirp all night...it was great! There are wonderful amenities and nice appliances. The countryside is beautiful out near the house, but there isn't much of a view from the house itself.

Great little cottage

  • 5 of 5
My family recently stayed at the Afton cottage over Labor Day weekend and had a wonderful time! Dick enthusiastically greeted us at the cottage with a warm welcome and an invitation to call if we needed anything. As soon as you walk in the door you feel at home - Dick and Virginia have done a wonderful job created a mountain getaway that feels comfortable and inviting.

A huge plus for us was the ability to bring our dog. She loved running around and exploring the property.

We will definitely stay here again if we return to the area (and the house is available).

Peacefully Perfect

  • 5 of 5
We were looking for a place to get away from "it all" but still be close enough to "it" for when we wanted to get out. This was perfect. Nestled down a path off a secluded mountain road, this house was both charming and amazingly peaceful.

Hummingbirds, deer...all more plentiful than people.

Lovely breweries and restaurants nearby (including our favorite, the pet friendly brewery "Blue Mountain"). Three Notch'd Grill was also delicious (pork belly is a must try).

Easy drive to Staunton (the frontier museum is wonderful) and Charlottesville.

The house was clean, comfortable, and cozy.

Dick was a great host who made himself available but did not impose himself.

The dog loved it. We loved it. We can't wait to come back.
