We are an empty nester couple in our 60s. Dick is a retired Realtor after 44 years. Veegie is the Branch Office Administrator for a stock brokerage firm in Charlottesville.
We have 4 children and 4 grandchildren, 2 Cairn Terrierists, 1 hound named Louise, and the Queen Bee Siamese Kittie, Miss Ellie.
We moved to Batesville Rd in 1994.
Dick Bell purchased this cottage in 1996
We built Afton Cottage in 1996 as a rental unit. In October 2007 we decided to market it as a vacation home on line through VRBO. Since that time, we have had over 250 reservations by wonderful folks, many of whom have returned multiple times.
The great appeal of Afton Cottage is its location. It is located in a beautiful area and it is convenient to Charlottesville, Monticello, Staunton, & Wintergreen.
Close proximity to the Shenandoah National Park, Appalachian Trail, 10+ wineries and 3 breweries make it an ideal home-away-from-home for hikers, bikers, sightseers and wine and craft beer afficianados.
The privacy and tranquility afforded by the cottage make it a wonderful getaway for those seeking a place to merely relax and unwind. It is a favorite of writers.
4 of my girlfriends and I had a fabulous time in this quaint little cottage. So perfectly close to many wonderful wineries, UVA, Monticello etc.. This cottage was just right for our group. Nice, clean, fully stocked kitchen with a washer and dryer, bathroom with extra toiletries and paper needs.
We are close friends so we didn't mind sleeping one on a couch and two in the Queen bed, two in the twins. Even though there was only one bathroom, it was spacious and bright for all 5 of us. Beautiful location, quiet (we were probably the only noise around aside from the wildlife and dogs) great deck...we plan on returning next year to get to the other wineries and to enjoy the lovely country. We never turned on the TV but DirecTV is pretty darn good for the country. Dick and Veegie are lovely though we never met them in person, a lovely note was left for us on the table at our arrival and in the mail a few days after. Nice furnishings, living room is adorable, lovely, bright place to stay in the country. I enjoyed myself immensely.
Only drawback, stinkbugs infiltrate the spotless house. That being said, it is in the country and it was actually more amusing than anything. It wasn't due to poor cleaning or any other household issue. Didn't bother us in the least but I like to be honest and forthcoming about these things so my reviews hold true for others.
It is very hard to expand on all of the glowing reviews of this home. If you are looking for a tranquil, peaceful setting, that is close to many activities and towns. THIS IS IT!!! We enjoyed seeing 6 deer outside each morning, plus red headed woodpeckers, and other numerous birds on the feeders on the deck that overlooked a mountain view throughout the day. What a way to start your day!! Dick has provided all that you need for your stay.. and then some! Dish Network TV, and good internet reception were a big plus!! It was wonderful to be located in the heart of all of the places ( breweries, wineries, Staunton, Charlottesville, Crozet ) that we like to visit in the area. We most certainly look forward to visiting Afton Cottage again. It feels like home.
This was a return trip for our family to the Afton Cottage and, once again, a simply wonderful one. Dick and Veegie's attention to detail (everything present that you would possibly require while back at home...think laundry detergent, charcoal briquets, etc.), plus customer focus (believe it or not, an Easter basket left out for our human child and wrapped treats for our canine one;), never disappoint!
We were once again down in the area in spring and just love the centralized location for bouncing around to nearby locations (e.g., Shenandoah NP, Blue Ridge Pkwy, wineries, breweries, UVA, Monticello, et al) and even going on one-tank trips ~1 hour away to quaint towns like Staunton, Lexington, Harrisonburg, Lynchburg.
Can't recommend this place and its owners more highly!
My wife and I loaded up on a whim while the kids were all away and headed down to Charlottesville for 3 days of hiking, wineries, and breweries. Dick, the owner, took care of us like royalty. Last minute setup and booking, and he was so prepared for us that Leo even had his own welcome dog biscuits wrapped in ribbon waiting for him after the ride.
The cottage and experience cannot be described well enough; if you're looking to stay in the Charlottesville area you've reached the last listing you need to view. Read the reviews; they're all 5 stars only because we can't give 6. Everything is perfect. The house is ready to walk in and relax and you will. Perfect central location in a perfect serene mountain setting with a view from your private deck of beautiful Virginia mountains. Everything you need is already there. Didn't have time to go to the grocery store? Doesn't matter; coffee, filters and tea are already there to back you up until you can. Details? Check.
The owners should teach a class on how to run a guest cottage as long as they keep Afton Cottage available for us. :-) We've stayed in many places and none are better.
We love many things about this house...the owners are welcoming to us and our two furbabies, the location is so close to the places we love to visit in and around Charlottesville, and the cottage is the perfect place for quiet retreat. The countryside around the house is beautiful and serene, and the house itself is well-appointed. There are wineries all around the area, and craft beer aficionados will appreciate the amount of breweries and pubs within 30 minutes of the property. We're repeat visitors and will continue to stay at Afton Cottage whenever we're in town.
Afton Cottage is in a rural area 20 miles west of Charlottesville. The area is served by good paved roads which pass farms, fields and woods.
