The island has no traffic lights, two-thirds is undeveloped and no buildings over 3 stories high exist here. One-third of the island is occupied by a US Wildlife Preserve (called Ding Darling Preserve) a birders paradise.
Shelling is the most famous beach pastime, since Sanibel lies across a major south to north Gulf current which brings a profusion of small shells up on its south facing beach (see map). There are over 25 miles of bike paths - off street, away from traffic and all level...no hills. Plenty of first class restaurants and shops exist. A small village is two blocks from the property with sandwich shops, ice cream store and convenience store as well as a restaurant open early for 'the World's Best Breakfast'...according to their sign.
