Casa Estrella del Mar is the perfect vacation rental for families, couples or a group of friends. The secluded location and proximity to town offer the option of going out to one of the many fine restaurants or just staying home and relaxing. The architecturally designed house is complemented by a beautiful cactus garden on the ocean side and many other tropical planting around the house which create a green, lush, garden setting. A short walk takes you to the rock beach below the house and a little further on, a private, sandy beach. Another spectacular and secluded beach is just a five minute walk. Exotic birdlife abounds. A stay at CEdM is one you won’t soon forget.
Our stay was absolutely wonderful. The view was gorgeous and the house was clean and comfortable. The beach was great for exploring and the sea and pool were a nice way to cool off from the mid day heat. I recommend this house highly. The location is very close to SJDS but far enough away to feel complete seclusion and quiet. Pedro and Maria were very lovely. The owner was very friendly and accommodating. 5 stars from us!

Owner's Response: Thanks Rob! We are so glad you had a good stay at Casa Estrella del Mar. Please come stay with us again.
The pictures online don't do this beautiful home justice. Casa Estrella is a stunning home perched on a hill, just above a secluded cove. The beach is rocky here (and full of beautiful shells), but there is a sandy beach a short walk to the left. Be sure and rent a Toyota Land Cruiser from "Irish John" as this home is at the end of a private dirt road, just a mile or so from town. We walked into town several times just for exercise, but found it useful to have a FJ40 4x4 for getting around. We saw dozens of howler monkeys and scores of beautiful birds in the yard every morning. As the owner says, it is an Eco-home, and solar-powered which means no A/C, but the fans and fresh breeze kept us comfortable even on the warmest days. On our 2nd day we found a fisherman down at the Marina and bought Tuna, and Corvina. Added some chopped tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and fresh lime juice for some of the best ceviche we've ever had. The home was cleaned meticulously every day by the staff who live on the property in a guest home just behind the main house. Take surf lessons with Dario's company http://www.sanjuandelsursurf.com/ and you'll be catching waves in no time. We are complete novices but enjoyed 3 days of surfing at nearby Marsella Beach. If you're looking for a 5 star home, with air-conditioning, a country club atmosphere, golf, and "Hamptons" feel, go the Hamptons. If you're looking for an adventurous, safe, naturally beautiful place that is out of the way, that's quiet, peaceful, rejuvenating... Casa Estrella (and Nicaragua) is the place to go. We'll be back next year for sure.
When we stepped foot in this awesome property, it, and the view, took our breaths away. We stayed a month and I wouldn't have changed one thing. The pictures and additional website from the owner were spot on. Being there in person was another story.
We received great customer service from the beginning to the end. I was in touch with the homeowner prior to going and they were very helpful and answered all of our questions. The caretakers of the property were friendly and took excellent care of us. Brush up on your Spanish! Every day Pedro took care of the grounds and the pool and Maria made the beds, washed the dishes and mopped the floors. Can't ask for more. Oh yes you can ... for a little extra she did laundry and cooked!
I didn't think I could survive without AC or TV. I did very nicely without both. There were ceiling fans everywhere and a constant breeze. The beds were as comfortable as home and we loved the outside shower and all the rest of the amenities. The house had everything but a blender. We crushed ice and made Pina Colodas every day. The rum was soooo good and the pineapple so fresh.
You must rent a 4-wheel drive for this property. The roads leave a little to be desired. We rented a jeep from Classic Cruisers. We had a ball with them. We would go to town twice a day and the drive was not my favorite thing to do. Once we got into town, there were bars and restaurants, souvenir shops, Internet cafes, markets ... just about everything you needed. The town was filled with Americans and Canadians, so there was always someone that spoke English. The food was very fresh and good in all of the restaurants.
My favorite thing to do: wake up in the morning with fresh-ground Nica coffee, sit on the deck, watch the waves and listen to the birds. The beach at the end of the property is not a sandy beach ... it's rocky. Bring water shoes. You'll have to go to another beach for sand and to boogie board or surf. Lots of places to explore adjacent to the property.
The home was wonderful. If I had to add one thing, it would be a grill for the house. We hated to bother Pedro every time we wanted to grill. On a sunset cruise, we caught nine white tuna; that was a real treat.
I felt safe at all times in the city and in our home. The hammocks were always occupied and the outside sound system was perfect.
I would definitely return and would definitely recommend this awesome home!

Families with Teenagers,
Perfect home for a true vacation. We were 5 adults and a 2 yr-old, and everyone had a great time! The house never felt crowded. The pool is fabulous, as are the views from the home. Design of home is amazing—you can be outside at all times, rain or shine. The whole back of the house is made up of glass doors, which makes for a constant indoor-outdoor experience. Outdoor dining table is beautiful and large. Outdoor speakers complete the experience. Kitchen is large and modern. The master bathroom is beautiful, though quite a few of us stuck to the fabulous outdoor shower for all our cleansing purposes! This home really lends itself to being outside; reading, swimming and relaxing.
The location of this property is amazing, as long as you don’t mind being a bit remote. The property is only about a 10 minute drive from town, but the road to the property is a bit treacherous. A four-wheel drive is a must. But once you master the road, it is a treat to go such little distance and yet be so removed! You don’t see any other homes from this property. Pedro and Maria are caretakers who live on the property, and they were wonderful. Maria cleans the house every day, and Pedro the grounds and pool. They are extremely nice and welcoming, and add to a feeling of security. (Spanish is definitely a plus in communicating with them).
The town of San Juan del Sur is great—sleepy, lots of surfing, some restaurants and coffee shops. Nothing that blows you away at first glance, but it grows on you as you explore. And Nicaragua is amazing—beautiful, largely untouched, lush, great beaches. Definitely a lesser developed/ tarnished Costa Rica.
We went in early August, which meant high temperatures and periods of rain most days. The house is not air-conditioned. Although we found this to overall be a positive (it kind of forces you to be at one with your surroundings); it does make for warm sleeping and bugs. Maria's daily cleaning helps with the bugs, and the fans throughout the house and patio keep things comfortable, but it is something to be considered.
Another small negative: the refrigerator. Seems like a minor detail, but as we really did spend so much time at the home, it was somewhat of an annoyance to not be able to count on cold drinks or ice cubes!
All in all, an amazing home in an unbelievable location. Recommended for anyone who enjoys being outside and relaxing and can handle a few bugs and no air-conditioning.

Families with Teenagers,
Families with Young Children,
We had a lovely time. The house is comfortable with lots of room, a pool, and a fabulous view. I was unsure about Nicaragua at first, but now I want to go back as soon as possible. The town is unpretentious with great restaurants and beautiful beaches. I've been telling all of my friends to go there. I am so surprised that the rest of the world hasn't discovered this place.

Families with Teenagers,
San Juan del Sur is the center of a spectacular and relatively unspoiled coastline that some have compared to a tropical Big Sur. World-class surfing, sailing, fishing, and other water activities abound. The area has started to attract American and Canadian tourists and expatriates, resulting in a variety of excellent gourmet restaurants and fun bars at affordable prices. Jungle canopy zipline, horseback riding, yoga, spas, massage, birding and beachcombing are among other amenities. Nearby Ometepe offers island volcanoes - a contender for natural wonders of the world. The area offers a great combination of Western food and amenities in an amazing natural setting, yet still retains its pre-commercialization fishing village feel. People are friendly and helpful.
