Falmouth House Rental Photos and Description

4 bedrooms, 1 full bath, 1 half bath, sleeps 8

Relax! Ocean breezes caress this lovely Cape Cod home, located just off the entrance to Falmouth Harbor. Listen to ferries whistle as they carry vacationers to and from Martha's Vineyard, just a 35 minute boat ride away. Start the day with breakfast in the sunlit dining room and watch the masts of sailboats as they exit the harbor. View the Vineyard in the distance. Enjoy a short walk to Falmouth's quaint Main Street through tree-lined neighborhoods, and sample the eclectic fare at some of the area's best restaurants. Swim at Falmouth's wonderful nearby beaches. Bike along the Shining Sea Bikeway, through salt ponds, along the shore, and into Woodshole. Or stay close to your home-away-from home and catch some rays in the sunny and private backyard or enjoy a book on the wisteria-shaded patio. This true Cape Cod-style home is nestled in a quiet neighborhood and is a perfect base for either an active stay, a lazy and restorative old-fashioned summer vacation, or a little of both!

Sunny Days: We hope that you have lots of sun on your vacation! The yard and surrounding roads are lush with greenery and flowers. Walking and biking are great ways to see the area-there is so much that is nearby. The Shining Sea Bikeway wends its way 3 miles past Falmouth's beaches, cottages, and ponds. Whether you're a nature buff or shopper, you can find things to do within a mile of the house. Fishing boats, ferries, and scenic sails depart from the harbor daily. There are exclusive shops on Main Street, and the Falmouth Commodore baseball team plays 2-3x per week in summer. The family-friendly Surf Drive beach is within walking distance and children will enjoy exploring the tidal pools for a variety of sea life and beautiful shells; many other beaches are a short drive or bike ride away. After biking or the beach, a great place to have a casual meal is at the Clam Shack; it's at the end of the street and has picnic seating right on the water - a perfect spot to watch the boats come and go!

Rainy Days: We've tried to equip the house with lots of rainy day ideas and activities. There are two televisions with cable, but we also have many games and puzzles that will keep a wide range of ages occupied. A rainy day is also the perfect time to take advantage of the wonderful shops and bookstores on Main Street - a great place to go souvenir hunting or to find the next vacation book. Woodshole offers an interactive aquarium. In nearby Mashpee, there are movie theaters, a kids' craft center, more shops, and restaurants.

Excursions: If you're feeling adventurous, there are several recommended day trips. Taking a 45 minute ferry to Martha's Vineyard from the harbor, with or without bikes, is a refreshing side trip - the Vineyard's carousel, gingerbread cottages, winery, bike paths, and scenic vistas are all memorable. Heritage Plantation in Sandwich (a 45 minute drive) is packed with history, gorgeous grounds, and an antique auto museum. The Cape Cod Central Railroad in Hyannis runs scenic and dinner trains to the Cape Cod Canal and back. Provincetown and the National Seashore beaches are only 1 1/2 hours from Falmouth, and offer whale watches, dune tours, more bike paths, and funky shopping areas.

About Jane Baronas

My grandparents purchased the cottage in 1963 when I was a child. We spent family vacations there for years, and still do with our own children.

Why Jane Baronas chose Falmouth

There are lots of special memories: 4th of July Fireworks over the harbor, Falmouth Road Race runners speeding past the end of the street, playing croquet in the yard, bringing a picnic to the Thursday Night Summer Band Concerts on the marina, wandering down Main Street for an ice cream on a hot night, biking on the Shining Sea Bikeway to beaches, and spending special times in the off-season (May and October are especially lovely!).

Because it is a treasured family home, we hope that our guests enjoy the love and care that we put into maintaining it and insuring that they have a good vacation.

Come and make your own memories!

What makes this house unique

One of my favorite spots is the patio. Whether we are gathering for meals, or games, or just reading, it's a cool and quiet place to relax. Birdsong and bunnies are plentiful! Also, there is really no need for a car; the beach, the harbor (and ferries), Main Street, Falmouth's Cape Cod Baseball League team, and a grocery store are all within easy reach on foot.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Spectacular late autumn weekend with great weather, long walks, good food, and a perfect spot to share it all. Wonderful location, clean accommodations, and no need for a car. 5 stars! We'll definitely be back!

Perfectly situated and wonderfully quiet!

We've been using HomeAway for years now, and we LOVED this rental! Quiet, walkable street AND neighborhood. Boat tours and much more in easy walking distance. Shopping in easy walking distance. Good division of space (we rarely saw the teenagers, and they liked having their own space). Also enjoyed sitting in the back yard watching the rabbits frolic. All in all, we recommend this rental, and we'd do it again.

Wonderful Family Vacation Cottage

  • 5 of 5
A belated thank you to our hosts! We truly enjoyed our vacation time at your cottage. We are admittedly new to renting houses for vacation and a bit nervous about it, however the detailed descriptions and photos of this property were spot on! No surprises at all. As soon as we arrived we felt at home. The owners were very nice and easy to deal with. The information book provided had a ton of local menus and brochures to browse through. We found and recommend walking to 'Stone L'Oven' on Main Street for some great food.

While we took the opportunity to 'disconnect', our daughters were very happy to find out there was wireless internet at the property. We ate at local restaurants often but found the kitchen to be well equipped with everything we needed to prepare meals at the house when we wanted – there is a market about 0.5 miles up the road with whatever you might want. The many comfortable bedrooms allowed everyone to have some private, quiet space. Everything was clean and well kept. We highly recommend this cottage to will definitely be back next year.

Cozy......with allergens

  • 2 of 5
On the surface this home is very quaint, roomy beyond initial expectations and neat. However, upon further inspection and settling into the bedrooms while unpacking, opening the closets hit us with an instant smell of mildew/mold. We could not keep our clothes hung in the closet due to the overwhelming odor of mildew. There is a mold issue in this home and after one night and half of the day being in the house, my spouse was sneezing non-stop and I was beginning to get a stuffy nose. Both downstairs bedrooms seemed to be most affected. I was also disappointed that some of the towels smelled of mildew. I had to use the washing machine just to wash sponges dried in the kitchen sink (smelling of mildew) and some towels that I came across that smelled of mildew. The bathroom did not smell of mildew until a towel or two got wet then it really brought out the odor.

I can only suggest washing all the linens in hot water and bleach to kill the mildew in the cloth and drying thoroughly. Then hire a professional to inspect the mildew/mold issue in the house. I saw the black, speckled mold on the side of the refrigerator beginning to spread onto a piece of paper that was hung on the fridge with magnets. Thorough cleaning with hot water and bleach is not being done.

There were four adults that were scheduled to stay the 4-night weekend (Thu-Mon); 2 left after a 2-night stay, the other 2 also cut the stay short. Anyone with high sensitivities to allergens/mold/mildew/dust should consider another location.

I did not relay my concerns to the homeowner during our stay knowing the remedy wasn't an easy, quick fix. The home is located within walking distance to the oceanfront and the higher humidity area leads to higher moisture levels being held in homes that are buttoned up and not aired out with full-time residents being present. A dehumidifier might help, but I think the deeper issue is in the walls of the residence. Great location, lots of room, comfortable beds, just not healthy to be in.

Owner's Response: Following this review, we had a contractor investigate claims of mold and mildew; he found that the house (walls, closets, etc.) were clean and solid, with no evidence of these potential allergens. We are sorry that these guests had a bad experience, as we try very hard to make our home clean and comfortable for all. It is unfortunate that I was not contacted during their week. Before this stay, I had personally cleaned the house and done the laundry (as I routinely do every two rental weeks or so, alternating with our cleaner) in order to make sure that everything was in order. Carpets are professionally cleaned annually (more often if required), and all surfaces are washed with bleach as needed. The house is used frequently by both owners and guests, both in and out of season, so is often aired out; there has never been a complaint of this nature before or since.

Perfect vacation!

  • 5 of 5
Truly a charming house-it is exactly as described in the posting! We loved that we were located in a very quiet little neighborhood (no street traffic- definitely a plus!) and a 5 minute walk in different directions got us to the beach, the ferry, the market, downtown, or the field for the Falmouth Commodore games! The house was clean, and had everything we needed- we were able to easily cook from the well stocked with pots/utensils kitchen, there was very good connectivity so I could check in with the office on occasion, really, it had everything we could ask for. For a small house, every inch of space is well-utilized. The two bedrooms downstairs are plenty large enough, and the dorm style room upstairs is perfect for even my older-teen kids. There were 5 of us there for the week and we had plenty of space; a larger family would be just as comfortable. The owner is responsive and very easy to work with- our reservation, check-in and check-out process went seamlessly. I cannot think of a single thing we'd change- this house is absolutely perfect for a peaceful getaway. We enjoyed a very relaxing vacation and will absolutely reserve this house for a week next summer. Loved it!

Falmouth Harbor is half a block away from the house. In the evenings, it's fun to walk around the harbor and look at the variety of yachts moored there. Night life and dining are a 10-15 minute walk to Falmouth's Main Street, but the well-appointed kitchen and dining room make it easy to have a relaxing evening at home; or use the gas grill and enjoy dining al fresco on the covered patio! On Thursday nights, pack a picnic to the band shell located next to the harbor for the summer band concerts. A favorite Falmouth event is the annual Road Race, held on August 17 this year (2014) - walk half a block to a front row seat as the runners hit mile five!

Bring bikes to enjoy the natural beauty nearby, or take them on the ferry to explore the easily accessible islands. The route of the famous Falmouth Road Race, which takes place in early August, runs by the end of the street. As you can see from the map, there is a lot to see within an hour or two of Falmouth itself. At the house, there is an updated guidebook with information about recreation, excursions, dining, and whatever else you need to make your vacation memorable and fun.
