Sized just right for a small party (up to 4 persons), it is exceptionally well outfitted for a relaxing on a well-deserved break. Central air conditioning/heating (rare on Plum Island), a cook’s kitchen with all the ‘bells and whistles’, custom furniture and coordinated designer finishes, and a deck made for enjoyment are just some of the cottage’s features. Local Attractions And Activities: Plum Island has always attracted people who love the outdoors; that becomes immediately noticeable when one investigates local activities. Almost everything one might expect in terms of New England beach activities (like picnicking, beach combing, surfing, windsurfing, fishing, biking, boating, kayaking, whale watching, and hiking) is found nearby, as well as some decidedly unexpected things like airplane rides and lessons, glider instruction, Eco-tourism, archery, birding, antiquing, outlet shopping, fine dining, golfing, and live theatre. What sets the area apart from certain more famous Northeast US coastal communities is that the area has a far more laid-back feel and does not resemble a tourist trap. Nor does it strive to, as the local residents proudly and fiercely work to keep development appropriate and attractive while at the same time graciously welcoming (AND reasonably priced!) To our view, the best attraction is the area’s beauty and peacefulness.

PAYMENTS & DEPOSITS: Payment and deposit information is briefly described below the rate tables in this listing, and are described in more detail in documents that potential guests will receive before making a reservation. Normally this information will be emailed. A deposit equaling 50% of the total rental price for the dates desired is required to initiate a reservation; until a deposit is received and has cleared, all available dates will be offered to other parties without notice. A refundable Security/Damage Deposit is required, which is normally $500. Positive ID checks are utilized; access to the unit is restricted until primary renter (the person or persons who sign the vacation lease) presents valid ID at check-in and receives a property familiarization by a member of our team. A reservation is not finalized until we have provided a valid Rental Proposal, all payments have been made, the vacation lease has been signed by all parties, and the check-in familiarization has taken place. We ask our guests to plan accordingly.

CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY: Some vacation rentals will not offer a refund for cancelled reservations, even if the unit can be re-rented. However, we have come up with a way to make a refund more possible for many full cancellations. Not every cancellation will qualify for a refund - refunds will depend on the timing of the cancellation and, in the case of cancellations before 1 April, whether we are able to re-rent the cancelled days. We break down our full cancellation policy into 3 different situations.

Situation A (a guest-initiated full cancellation before 1 April for any reason) is the most complex, since there are many variables. This type of cancellation may qualify for up to 100% refund* of rent paid IF the unit can be re-rented during the dates in question for the same or greater price, for the same or greater period, using our regular means of marketing, within 30 days of the cancellation. If it is re-rented during that period for a lesser price, or for a shorter period, any refund of rent will be limited to the actual price paid by the new guest for those days that overlap the cancelled guest's reservation (prorated), up to the amount of rent paid by the cancelling guest. No refund will be given in Situation A cancellations until the new guest has paid in full. If the unit cannot be re-rented within 30 days of the cancellation using our regular means of marketing, or if the cancelling guest does not wish to wait until we are able to re-rent the cancelled days, a refund for Situation A cancellations is limited to 25%* of the actual rental price quoted to the cancelling guest, or the amount of the rent paid by the cancelling guest, whichever is less.

Situation B (a guest-initiated full cancellation for any reason between 1 April and 30 days prior to check-in). A situation B cancellation qualifies for a 25% refund* of the rental price quoted to the cancelling guest, up to the rental amount he or she has paid, whichever is less, regardless of our ability to re-rent the unit.

Situation C (guest-initiated full cancellation for any reason inside 30 days prior to check-in, and/or after check-in). No rent refunds are given for a Situation C cancellation.

Please note that no rent refund of any kind, for any reason, can exceed the rent amounts paid by the guest, and no interest will be paid for any amount collected for any reason. *All Situation A and B cancellation refunds will be subject to the nonrefundable $40 reservation fee. However, as long as cancellations occur before occupancy, a full refund of the Security/Damage Deposit will be made. Partial guest-initiated cancellations, no matter when they instituted, do not qualify for any refund, except under limited circumstances. Guest-initiated early check-outs/departures and late check-ins/arrivals do not qualify for refund of any kind, regardless of the reason. Under many circumstances, landlord-initiated cancellations will qualify for refund. Your lease will define these and all other limitations; please inquire for additional information. We highly recommend that our guests invest in travel insurance to help protect them in the event of cancelled reservations and travel plans! Hi Brent and Cathy,
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay ! I loved the way the cottage was decorated and all the ammenities. You both have truly thought out everything a person/family would need when away from home. The cottage was spotless and comfortable. It was an easy drive down Route 1 to Boston ( a little bit more scenic and grocery stores along the way, about 1 hour). Newburyport with it's great shops and walkway along the harbor was quaint (went there 3 times) We went to Bob Lobster at least 4 times, the best fish sandwich I have had in years! Also picked up some moisturizer at the Plum Island Soap Company. The area is very quiet and a nice getaway from our normally hectic lives. Everyone was very hospitable and your 1st floor tenant was very helpful ! Pass along a "Hi" from us. Thanks again, Sheila, Joe and Jay !

Fabulous Vacation!

In August 2010, my 16-year-old daughter and I spent a delightful week at Tailwinds Cottage on Plum Island. We enjoyed walks on the beach which is only steps away from the cottage, eating at the local restaurants, and sightseeing in nearby Newburyport. While the cottage is small, the layout of all the rooms is done so as to maximize the sqare footage of the living areas. The cottage is upstairs, private, quiet, and beautifully as well as tastefully decorated in blue and tan beach-themed furniture and accessories. Tailwinds is the perfect get-away-from-it-all-and-relax destination and we can't wait to go back!

Fantastic cottage - lovely owners.

We are a family of three from Scotland and stayed in Tailwinds in July 2011 during our vacation in the States.
From the initial booking of the cottage to the moment we left we had no problems and great service from Cathy & Brent. They even provided us with helpful directions for our trip to Plum Island and also a giftbox on arrival, some goodies in the fridge and a little gift for our son that was much appreciated. Everything in the cottage is as described in the advert and it is as good as the pictures suggest.
The cottage itself is located in a very quiet part of Plum Island and can only be described as perfect! The cottage is top class and we loved every minute of being there. Plum Island is quiet and laid back and I think thats the way the locals like it ! It is an excellent base for exploring this part of the country and we managed to fit in trips to Salem and Boston during our stay as well as a trip to the factory outlets to the North.
Apart from yourselves and some food, there is nothing you need to bring to Tailwinds as everything is provided for you. There is ample information in the cottage about the surrounding areas on what to see and do. If you are thinking of renting here you will need to have a car.
If the weather is nce, the beaches are nice and quiet and the views from the cottage balcony are great. There is plenty to explore locally in the town and plenty good places to eat. We got take out one night from Bob Lobster which you pass on the way onto the island - fish was great and portions huge - make sure you use a bib if you have the lobster!!
This is one of the best rentals we have stayed in and would thoroughly recommend. We will certainly be going back again in the future.

the cottage is just adorable!

We spent two months at the cottage in 2010 and we just loved it! With the beach just in front and a nice deck we spent many a cocktail hour soaking in the sun and surroundings. The management team were very responsive to our few minor issues and would recommend a stay at this lovely place to anyone.

Best Ever!!

We have just returned from two weeks at Tailwinds, and can honestly say this was our best rental experience ever. Gorgeous and meticulously maintained property, fabulous view of the bay and easy walk to ocean beach. We really enjoyed being on the "bay side" - quiet, picturesque, lovely. The bedrooms and living area in the cottage are beautifully decorated, the linens are wonderful, the seating is comfy. We used the deck for breakfast every morning, and again for late afternoon relaxing. We had no desire to leave the island for the entire two weeks! The few rainy days we had were spent comfy and cozy watching the DVDs thoughtfully provided, and just curling up reading books in the lovely living area. XM radio and Cable "On Demand" service was another perk we took advantage of. The laundry facility is so helpful to have right downstairs, we used it quite a bit, and the added bonus of the provided beach chairs and beach towels made our stay so easy and relaxing!
The kitchen is well stocked with plenty of dishware, glasses, cookware, etc. There was nothing that I needed that was not right there at my fingertips! We "cooked in" alot! Grocery shopping was done at Market Basket - about a 15 min drive. Fresh vegetables, fruit, and even pies can be found at TenderCrop Farm, a 10 minute drive from the cottage. We got great fresh fish (to cook) at Davids Seafood Market over in Salisbury. We walked to Mad Marthas for breakfast a couple of times and got great lobster rolls at Bob Lobster. We used Dicks Variety only for picking up the Boston Globe in the morning. We went into Newburyport for gellato, for bagels from Abrahams, and for the various little shops - very fun!
Plum Island has always been a favorite of ours - and now Tailwinds has made it even more so!

Tailwinds Cottage overlooks the calm bay and basin waters of Plum Island’s northeast water’s edge, just a short 5-minute walk to the sand dunes and waves of the Atlantic Ocean. It is situated in a quiet residential area near the historic Plum Island Lighthouse (visible from the cottage). Plum Island is a delightful, breeze-swept barrier island located just off of Newburyport, MA, a town that delights visitors from around the world. A short bridge connects the island to Newburyport. The beaches of Plum Island were for many years a local, well-guarded secret, despite the fact that in 1942 the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge was established to protect and preserve the pristine environment and abundant flora and fauna of the southern 3/4 of the island. Visitors have over 8 miles of soft sandy coastline to explore and enjoy, not to mention the numerous hiking opportunities and spectacular vistas offered by pathways and boardwalks within the refuge.
