Photos and Description of the Valletta vacation house rental
House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

The lower part of the house pre-dates the arrival of the Knights in 1530 and was a farm dwelling, on top of which a larger house was built in the mid-1500's, and later enlarged in the 17th century. It is thought that this was one of the earliest Knights’ houses when the Knights of Malta settled Senglea in the 16th century.

The house retains amazing intact historic features. It is open on two sides making it both light and cool.

The house has been restored with great care. All the stonework was hand scraped to protect the texture and preserve the great beauty of the masonry. Modernization of bathrooms and kitchen was done to a high standard. A large teak-decked roof garden with a six-seater Jacuzzi and amazing views was also created.

On the ground floor there is a large vaulted hall, leading to an inner courtyard with a sliding glass roof. There are two large bedrooms, and a stylish bathroom on this floor.

Below the ground floor are two large cellars carved into the solid rock. The stone staircase from the inner courtyard leads to the first floor and is especially beautiful.

On this floor there is a large sala (living room) with original beams 22 feet above the traditional Maltese tiled floor. The spacious kitchen is equipped with stainless steel cooker, a dish washer, microwave, a large fridge/freezer and high quality red wood Italian fitted cabinets. The matching redwood table seats six comfortably.

A small lobby, with WC and also a washer-dryer, leads to a stone spiral staircase to the second floor which has a bedroom and an ensuite wet room. This bedrom is quite samll and has two single bedrooms but it does have geat atmosphere.

All three bedrooms have air-conditioning. A balustrade balcony overlooks the inner courtyard.

A short spiral staircase leads to the large roof garden, laid to teak decking and ornamental stones which commands magnificent views of Birgu, ancient buildings and Grand Harbour Marina.

The roof garden has four teak longers, 4 teak upright chairs, a teak table, and umbrellas.

This is truly spectacular house which is also very convenient:

• Only 10 minutes from the airport

• Valletta easily accessible by car, local bus or nearby traditional water craft

• Senglea water front with bars and restaurants only two minutes, and more in Vittoriosa

• Convenient to local shops and supermarket

• The Gardjola gardens with famous views of the Grand Harbour only a short 3-minute walk

• Ideal location for exploring Malta and the Three Cities, or sailing and diving holidays

Why The Owner chose Valletta

Malta is a fascinating island with immense history, rich cultural life, charming people and wonderful climate. Everything is close and there are plenty of outdoor activities with world-class sailing and diving in particular, as well as beaches, walking, golf, etc. Great museums, ancient opera house, pre-historic and ancient sites, palaces, castles, fortifications - malta has it all.

Senglea (known locally as Isla) is one of the three cities founded in the Grand Harbour by the Knights soon after they arrived in Malta in 1530. It is a walled town which resisted the Great Siege in 1565. It is full of ammazing and interesting houses, many dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Many foreigners are buying into this area because of the historic atmosphere and the beautiful houses awaiting restoration. The awterside and the views across to Valletta are stunning.

What makes this house unique

We love spending lazy days on our fully teak-decked roof garden with lovely views and a six-seater jacuzzi. There is a dining table on the roof and teak loungers.

We also enjoy the main sitting room with its beamed ceiling 22 feet above the floor. All the stonework was hand scraped giving it a texture and interest that makes you want to stare at it for ages.

The house contains lovely antiques. It is also a few minutes walk down a passage way to the Senglea waterside with bars, cafes and restaurants, and a little further to even more in Birgu.

Dear Michael,
We just spent a week in Malta in this wonderful house in a very historic and authentic Maltese town called Senglea, situated across the harbour from both Valletta and Vittoriosa. We had arranged a car, and parking was very easy to find along the waterfront (100m away). Traffic is heavy in and out of Valletta, however, travelling in the rest of the Island, we had no other trouble and enjoyed using the house as our base to explore Malta and Gozo. Coming back to the house was great each evening, and we put the rooftop deck and jacuzzi to use every night the weather co-operated. The views and atmosphere are incredible up there. Inside the house, the pictures don't really do it justice. The modern kitchen is great, and the main living room with its high ceilings are like no other place we have stayed. With two kids nearing their teenage years, the three washrooms came in handy, as did the broadband internet. Also, Victor, our local contact, was really wonderful, and when we found out that the gas for the stove had run out, we had a new canister within one hour!
We certainly do recommend the house as a base for a long weekend or longer vacation.
The only areas for improvement would be regarding the soundproofing on the lower two levels as well as screens on the windows or mosquito netting for the bedrooms. The locals start honking and manytimes yelling in the street before 6 or 7 in the morning, which, after enjoying the jacuzzi the night before, was tough on the system. For the screens/netting, the mosquitos are small and very quick, and this was mosquito season, so we were their dinner!
Neither of these two issues took away from our enjoyment of the country, however, and hope to be back again soon.
Some final recommendations, if you want a taxi to take you into Valletta or somewhere else, get the number for Mifsud Garage in Birgu from Victor and they will pick you up from the house, drop you off where you wish to go and then pick you up later, all for a very reasonable price. We rented a car from Rodney at R&R Garage. Great prices and very friendly service, although our car did have signs of significant wear and tear but it never failed to get us where we wanted to go. Small cars are definitely the way to go, as well. We had great meals at Tal-Barklor in Senglea, Rubino's in Valletta and Del Borgo in Birgu, and would recommend them all.
All in all a great vacation and, as mentioned, we hope to be back again soon.
Thanks again,
