About Bald Head Island: Located at the southern tip of North Carolina, within 35 minutes of easy-to-drive Interstate 40 near Wilmington, Bald Head Island is an oasis of natural beauty and recreation in an ideal 'get-away-from-it-all' setting. Reachable only by ferry (convenient and well-run in Southport, NC) and traversed by golf cart and bike, the island's natural beauty ranges from the Cape Fear shoals, where eastern and southern waves meet at the tip of the island, to the haunting marshes and spanish-moss-draped live oak of the Maritime Forest. While nature is queen of the island, there are plentiful amenities, from an excellent market to wonderful boutique shopping to a wide range of dining alternatives at MoJo's in the harbor or one of the club dining facilities. With plenty of things to do and a location accessible within a day from as far as New York, Nashville or Atlanta, Bald Head Island is a fabulous destination where you and your family can truly have it all.

Clubs on Bald Head: Recreation is plentiful on BHI. The Bald Head Island Club (temporary membership included with Flip Flops rental) provides a championship golf course that begins on the ocean, enters the maritime forest and concludes with spectacular ocean-view holes. The professional golf staff is friendly and extremely helpful. A full tennis program is also available, with clinics, lessons, cardio sessions and player pairings. The BHI Club pool is popular with kids and teens, with the 'Pelicatessen' restaurant adjoining. Croquet is a serious endeavor at the Club, with an active group. There is a playground for kids and a fully equipped, up-to-date fitness center.

The Shoals Club is a high-end beach and dining club at the east end of the island. Spectacularly located with views of Cape Fear shoals, the club provides full-service beach amenities (towels, umbrellas) and has a beautiful pool and kid's pool. Dining can be in or outside. One has to see it to appreciate how lovely it is.

Other Diversions on Bald Head Island: A number of concessions offer fun recreational activities. The Bald Head Island Conservancy operates day camps for kids, exploring the abundance of nature on the island. Famously, the BHIC operates the sea turtle nesting program, which peaks in August with the hatch from the island's many protected nesting sites. A neat shop and museum are maintained by the non-profit group. Sailing is available through the BHI Yacht Club in the harbor. Kayaking, canoeing and 'SUP' (stand-up paddleboarding -- the newest craze) are available from a concession located right on island. These can be guided or self-directed. Biking is big as well, with two shops offering every type of two-wheeled contraption -- with helmets, baby or kid features, etc. And shopping is a big deal, with a surprising number of boutiques wedged into the island's discreetly sited retail center in the area around the market and town center. Finally, just cruising around in the golf cart and swimming on the beach--AHHHH!!!
