Host a gals weekend, summer vacation, quiet get-away, family gathering or a Thanksgiving celebration. Grab our kayaks, canoe or tubes and find the waterfall and rope swing near the community swimming pool. Sink into the cozy couches and steal an afternoon nap. At night, sit by the fire pit under the stars.

Romantic for two...too.

The cottage has a quaint loft, sunroofs, ceiling fans and two decks overlooking the Shenandoah River. Spring, summer, winter or fall--when the leaves are on fire-- this spot is a simple slice of heaven. Many repeat clients, so book early, especially during peak and holiday weeks.

Why Jay chose Shenandoah

We can breathe here! No traffic, no neighbors and a world away from DC.

We bought this 2nd home for our family and children. We're now putting 3 through college!

What makes this house unique

The cottage is also 20 minute drive to the Appalachian Trail. A hiking paradise!

Middleburg offers great boutique shopping. From fine clothing & jewelry, to fancy toiletries, gourmet meats and take-home meal, visit this lovely town on the way to some of the wineries. There's even a special store for the furry member of your family.

Berryville is a step back in time. Grab an ice cream cone or a latte.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The Riverhouse on the Shenandoah is having another blockbuster summer.

The 2012 calendar booked solid in June...and ony a few weeks are available in July & August. September is fully booked and the Fall leaf-peepers are starting to inquire earlier too!

We want to thank our repeat guests who've told us this fabulous, little home has become a 'best kept secret'. We are now adding a beautiful, full bathroom to our newly renovated Master suite addition.

We will be adding our guestbook comments on this website soon...and also check out :

River!! I didn't want to leave

River!! I didn't want to leave
  • 5 of 5
This place is down off a long private road, not knowing what to expect, you then see the house...and the river right behind it and my heart started pounding! You told me your home was on the river, but I have heard that before. You ARE on the river!! I live in the city and your home took me away from all the hassles and craziness of Washington. My stay was great, loved your ideas for short day trips, Polo in the Plains was all too amazing. Who knew all of this was so close? The stars and firepit took me back to my growing up outside of the city. Your home was spotless and loved the spa bathroom and bedroom deck, nicer than my condo! We named the two bald eagles Lucy and Ben! Saw them both times floating down the river. Keep my credit card on file, We are coming back in the Fall!! Thank you so much for sharing a dream getaway, Dan

Fantastically relaxing

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I decided to take my parents away for a long weekend. We opted to take a more scenic route across whites ferry to get to this secluded treasure on the Shenandoah. The journey there was a delight though, I would strongly recommend making it during the daylight hours as to take in the natural beauty. The privacy of the gated community with few neighbors made us feel like true pioneers but, the house quickly reminded us that we were in the 21st century. The master bedroom has incredible views through its numerous floor to ceiling windows and awesome wrap around deck. There were some staples left in the fridge and cabinets for us to use such as tea, coffee, popcorn, spices, and condiments. This made meal prep and grocery shopping much easier than past rental experiences. We opted for family time outside and in nearby middleburgh opposed to watching the cable tv or playing on the Internet through the house's wifi. The bed and bedding was quite comfortable which made sleeping a breeze and the rainfall shower awakened the body in relaxation mode. We will definitely return to the river house when we are able to spend more time. 2 nights was a quick recharge and very relaxing so I am thinking 1 week would be close to utopia.

Love. Love. Love this property

  • 5 of 5
This house has a charming quality about it. It has a gorgeous view of the Shenandoah River and its easy access to the river is a bonus. The coziness of the house is very appealing. I have stayed at this property several times and hope to return in the future.

Heaven!

  • 5 of 5
What a wonderful place. We wanted to get away from it all. We looked at hotels and B & B's but luckily found this gem in the the mountains on the Shenandoah. A great cottage with lots of hidden treasures. We are nature lovers, so the dirt road and wooded community were a welcomed surprise this close to DC. We saw a wild turkey one evening. We felt like the only 2 people in the world...exactly what we needed. The owners were great, accommodating us with every request, a we had a few. We would like to keep this a little secret for ourselves but loved it so much I had to share. Can't wait to go back. Love, new River House friends.

House is over rated for the money!

  • 1 of 5
The pictures on the website and reality was very deceiving. The curb appeal was poor the weeds at front door are 2' high. Outside of home needs a good power washing. The road in is ridiculous - don't bring your expensive SUV. Killed spiders that had huge black thick furry bodies inside the house. House has a heavy mildew smell. If you have allergies be careful. We have traveled to many VRBO homes and had great experiences. This was not one of them. For the money it was very rated!

Owner's Response: It's unfortunate this is the only time we even heard from this party, as our team is always ready to jump to action for our guests!
Woods, wildlife, gravel roads and seclusion are we advertise. All feedback is taken to heart, and while this post is totally from left field, it deserves our attention. Every effort is taken to insure all guests have a clean, comfortable and enjoyable stay. Because of our sensitive eco-system and being situated on the banks of the Shenandoah River, we take all precautions to avoid heavy pesticides, weed killers, etc. The toxic runoff would simply be too harmful to fish & wildlife...and would contaminate the water.
We list The Riverhouse as a nature lover's dream, so if you need city lights, manicured flowerbeds and every bug fumigated on our 8 acres, then this is not your getaway. We have no curbs, so "curb appeal" has little relevence to those who appreciate the natural appeal of the forest and the beautiful river that shares this property. We are in the woods, make no mistake. Some people aren't made for that. Guests have seen many creatures, great and small, from finches and foxes to beaver and bear. We have a number of photos on VRBO and more upon request. The house is completely turn key and is always thoroughly cleaned and sanitized, before the next guest checks-in. Fresh linens and towels are a given. We clean with non-chlorine bleach, to best serve guests with children, allergies or chemical sensitivities.

Wow

  • 5 of 5
What a beautiful place! We arrived in the early afternoon for a quick getaway. Pulling up to the house was a great surprise, the pictures don't do it justice. The home was warm and inviting, didn't feel like a sterile hotel. The view was amazing, the house is right up to the river. The rooms are big and they had everything we needed. The owners made it all so easy. They provided us with all the information and directions. It was one of the most relaxing weekends we've had in a very long time. Can't wait to go back. We'll be booking a longer stay soon!
