We retired to this home in Hawaii in 2001 from Alaska. Linda served as a natural resource manager, habitat protection biologist and SE Alaska Regional Supervisor for 27 years in Alaska. She met Kirk in Kapoho area while on vacation after he had completed a solo sailing trip there from Bellingham WA.
Once in Hawaii, Linda was contracted by the State of Hawaii to serve as their first Marine Protected Areas Statewide Coordinator to foster greater conservation of the very most important marine ecosystems. The WaiOpae Tidepools Marine Life Conservation District at Kapoho was established during her tenure in this position. We started the Cape Kumukahi Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3), in 2004 and completed several multi-year conservation projects for the Kapoho tidepools. We now spend part of the year in our home in Bellingham, WA and the rest in Hawaii.
Kirk and Linda Flanders purchased this house in 1998
This property is absolutely unique compared to any other oceanfront properties we have seen throughout Hawaii due to easy year-round access into the protected tide pools plus the open Pacific Ocean just beyond the pools to watch the waves and whales and listen to the surf. The snorkeling is better than almost every other place I have snorkeled in Hawaii.
"The house is BEAUTIFUL! I couldn't have imagined anything as nice as this...perfect place for two newlyweds to take some time together in this spectacular setting. My mother is still sleeping - it is the best night's sleep she's had in weeks...We found everything to be in great working order, all clean and waiting for us. It was just as if you knew what we needed...The waves and sunshine woke us up...Thank you again for your exceptional hospitality."
I came to Hawai'i for a retreat so that I could write a book and easily snorkel during my breaks. This home was more than a place to stay; it was an astonishing sanctuary, a place where the sound of the ocean and the clarity of the air supported everything I was doing. My spouse and I loved the comfortable chairs looking out at the tidepools, and marveled at the fish swimming in the "front yard" lagoon. The space is laid out beautifully, with attention to detail that makes it harmonious. We've already booked for another stay here later this year. So grateful to the owners for creating this special place. In addition to how easy it was to get to great snorkeling, we enjoyed the proximity to Hilo, Pahoa, and Kapalana, our favorite places on the island when we're not writing or visiting the fish. The only thing not perfect is if you cannot climb stairs, which you must do to get into the house. Luckily, my knees are still good enough!
Just before we arrived Hurricane Iselle landed... Unfortunately it packed a punch to the beautiful home we were to have stayed in. With no water or power we were forced to seek another place to stay. Our heart went out to the owners of this home and the island in general. The owners were devistated I'm sure, but were very accommodating. They made sure we received a full refund prior to our arrival and communicated with us every step along the way. Needless to say we didn't get to stay in their lovely home but we plan to in the near future. They get 5 stars for being gracious and kind! We even drove over during our stay for a day to try and help out the owner and community in any way we could but unfortunately couldn't get into the community to do so. I'm sure that we would have had the time of our lives at this home! Thank you for the opportunity, we will be renting your property soon!!
It is hard to describe how beautiful the location of this home/property is. We've been to almost all of the Hawaiian Islands multiple times over the past 40 years. We've stayed in condo's, high end resorts and a few private rental homes. This experience is so unique that it is now our favorite place to go to! The home delivered everything that the owners have posted. Very comfortable and plenty of room for enjoyable times in the house...without it being overly spacious. Kitchen was great for cooking as that is what we mostly did for our meals. Bedrooms were very comfortable! The upper main living area has a nice full bathroom/shower. The second bathroom is downstairs in a kind of private open air setting, with separate shower, toilet & sink. I personally loved the downstairs shower...very convenient after going into the ocean water.
Speaking of water...what makes this place "Unique" and wonderful is it's own personal Tidepool that is literally steps off the back of the house. The water (not very deep) is warmer than the ocean water and it is stocked by an amazing diversity of fish of all kinds...TRULY INCREDIBLE! We were in the water everyday...which is a record for us! We had a 9 month old baby and she enjoyed the water just as much as we did! My mother in law who is in her 80's enjoyed being able to enter the Tidepools with just a little assistance.
This property is not a pretentious over the top kind of home...but very down to earth, very comfortable and very clean...With a great downstairs entertaining area that has a small fridge and comfortable lounging area.
We would return in heart beat!!! I highly recommend this property to Families of all types.
This house provides a superb base to enjoy the delights of the Eastern side of The Big Island and puts you at the centre of some spectacular scenery. Staying about half an hour’s drive from Hilo we managed to visit all of the main sights including the volcano, the nearby champagne pools, the farmers’ market. We even ventured along Saddle Road up to the observatory and up to the North East of the island to Waipio. The property is located in a quiet, very well maintained setting surrounded by other houses. The view from the lounge is spectacular - you can watch the waves crashing on to the rocks 70m away – and the pools transform completely as the tide gently comes in and goes out . In addition to the paranoid crabs, the near pools offer various types of fish together with a family of eels that kept us entertained. When the tide comes in other, bigger fish come around and can clearly be seen whilst snorkelling. The house itself is extremely clean, well equipped with everything you could possibly need - plus more! - and is very comfortable. The provision of a variety of sizes of swim shoes was an unexpected bonus! Tom the caretaker was just a phone call away and responded immediately. The “locals” kept making an appearance to check on us (the eels, a mongoose or two, numerous geckos), but we were fine…….. the beautiful views and the access to such a natural place were all that we needed.
My husband and I visited This home and fell in love. It is roomy with everything you need in the kitchen, in the bathroom, and in the tide pools. We loved the outdoor bathroom, particularly the shower. The sunrises from the deck were spectacular! The beds were all comfy and the rooms well decorated. But by far our favorite think was the location. This property is secluded but not isolated and we had a great deal of fun hopping from rock to rock in the tide pools. We even "stumbled upon" a sea turtle not too far in front of the house. This rental is great for both relaxation and adventure. We were very sad to leave.
We had a wonderful stay at the Kapoho Tidepools. The house is gorgeous and we spent many hours in the outside area which contains both shaded and sunny parts. We watched fish in the pool outside off the lanai and for snorkeling we walked the 6 or so houses down the street to the Wai'Opae marine sanctuary. It was a pretty quick drive to Volcano and to Hilo (we especially recommend the Thai Pizza with tofu at Tina's Gourmet Garden Cafe in Hilo). We came here to relax and did just that.
