OCEANFRONT VERY PRIVATE SINGLE FAMILY HOME ON KAPOHO TIDEPOOLS

Kapoho House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 5)

Experience the famous Kapoho-WaiOpae Tide Pools and Marine Preserve from this VERY PRIVATE and ACCESSIBLE OCEANFRONT HOME on the eastern shore of the Big Island of Hawaii!

Take a few easy steps down from this comfortable and artistic single-family home into the protected inner reef of tidal pools. The panoramic coastline views combined with the easy ocean access make it a perfect retreat for the active family.

Relax into the sounds and sights of the ocean, tropical breezes, ocean sunrises and moonrises! Enjoy incredible stargazing over the dark ocean sky.

See the VIRTUAL TOUR (click the link at the end of this listing) to really know what you could experience. In addition to the tour, the 16 photographs show the updated furnishings and amenities since the virtual tour was created. (NOTE: We no longer have a hot tub.)

From the over 200 ft of ocean shoreline on the property, you can float, swim or snorkel in your very own private warm, calm ocean lagoon or swim further out to explore the extensive coral pools. These pools support 11 types of coral, over 113 types of colorful tropical fish, green sea turtles and an occasional monk seal.

These warm tide pools are such incredible fish habitat that they are one of only 11 marine preserves in the entire State! Enjoy the safest and best snorkeling in East HI from this secluded beautiful location.

This exceptional home has Italian tile throughout, granite counters in a well-stocked kitchen with stainless steel appliances, and an open airy Great Room overlooking the ocean. Upstairs are 2 bedrooms with ocean views, one has a new king bed and one a queen. Plus a third bedroom with double bed overlooking a lovely garden with great ocean wave sounds to lull you to sleep. The house will nicely accommodate a family of five.

Two balcony decks overlook the ocean and a third looks over the tropical gardens. An oceanfront covered entertaining and lounging area is on the garden level adjacent to the patio that is perfect for sunbathing before slipping into your own private lagoon. Enjoy the ground-level covered and semi-enclosed tropical garden bathroom with toilet, sink and shower. The property is fenced to enhance a feeling of security and has private off-street parking.

Other nearby recreational activities include: VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK with lava viewing within 15 miles; Ahalanui Warm Springs County Park with 90 degree ocean-fed pool; fishing, diving, kayaking, surfing, winter whale-watching and star gazing; hiking, bicycling, golfing, scenic drives along the coast; zoo, astronomy center, NW Hawaiian Islands visitor center; and museums, shopping, farmer's markets, and dining.

Located in a small, quiet seaside community in 'sunny Kapoho' with the least rain in East Hawaii and the best air quality on the island. The historic town of Pahoa is 10 miles and has groceries, fine restaurants, fresh fish market, internet cafe, boutiques, business center, urgent care clinic, pharmacy, etc. Hilo International Airport is 29 miles. The Kona airport is 115 miles, about a 2.5 hour drive.

We have a five-day minimum but will consider as few as three days if we have an opening of fewer than five days and our caretakers do not need to work on the property. To make a reservation, please check the calendar for availability and then email us with your desired dates and phone number.

"The house is BEAUTIFUL! I couldn't have imagined anything as nice as this...perfect place for two newlyweds to take some time together in this spectacular setting. My mother is still sleeping - it is the best night's sleep she's had in weeks...We found everything to be in great working order, all clean and waiting for us. It was just as if you knew what we needed...The waves and sunshine woke us up...Thank you again for your exceptional hospitality."

We retired to this home in Hawaii in 2001 from Alaska. Linda served as a natural resource manager, habitat protection biologist and SE Alaska Regional Supervisor for 27 years in Alaska. She met Kirk in Kapoho area while on vacation after he had completed a solo sailing trip there from Bellingham WA.

Once in Hawaii, Linda was contracted by the State of Hawaii to serve as their first Marine Protected Areas Statewide Coordinator to foster greater conservation of the very most important marine ecosystems. The WaiOpae Tidepools Marine Life Conservation District at Kapoho was established during her tenure in this position. We started the Cape Kumukahi Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3), in 2004 and completed several multi-year conservation projects for the Kapoho tidepools. We now spend part of the year in our home in Bellingham, WA and the rest in Hawaii.

Kirk and Linda Flanders purchased this house in 1998

This property is absolutely unique compared to any other oceanfront properties we have seen throughout Hawaii due to easy year-round access into the protected tide pools plus the open Pacific Ocean just beyond the pools to watch the waves and whales and listen to the surf. The snorkeling is better than almost every other place I have snorkeled in Hawaii.

FANTASTIC LOCATION

  • 5 of 5
This house provides a superb base to enjoy the delights of the Eastern side of The Big Island and puts you at the centre of some spectacular scenery. Staying about half an hour’s drive from Hilo we managed to visit all of the main sights including the volcano, the nearby champagne pools, the farmers’ market. We even ventured along Saddle Road up to the observatory and up to the North East of the island to Waipio. The property is located in a quiet, very well maintained setting surrounded by other houses. The view from the lounge is spectacular - you can watch the waves crashing on to the rocks 70m away – and the pools transform completely as the tide gently comes in and goes out . In addition to the paranoid crabs, the near pools offer various types of fish together with a family of eels that kept us entertained. When the tide comes in other, bigger fish come around and can clearly be seen whilst snorkelling. The house itself is extremely clean, well equipped with everything you could possibly need - plus more! - and is very comfortable. The provision of a variety of sizes of swim shoes was an unexpected bonus! Tom the caretaker was just a phone call away and responded immediately. The “locals” kept making an appearance to check on us (the eels, a mongoose or two, numerous geckos), but we were fine…….. the beautiful views and the access to such a natural place were all that we needed.

PARADISE

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I visited This home and fell in love. It is roomy with everything you need in the kitchen, in the bathroom, and in the tide pools. We loved the outdoor bathroom, particularly the shower. The sunrises from the deck were spectacular! The beds were all comfy and the rooms well decorated. But by far our favorite think was the location. This property is secluded but not isolated and we had a great deal of fun hopping from rock to rock in the tide pools. We even "stumbled upon" a sea turtle not too far in front of the house. This rental is great for both relaxation and adventure. We were very sad to leave.

HEAVEN

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful stay at the Kapoho Tidepools. The house is gorgeous and we spent many hours in the outside area which contains both shaded and sunny parts. We watched fish in the pool outside off the lanai and for snorkeling we walked the 6 or so houses down the street to the Wai'Opae marine sanctuary. It was a pretty quick drive to Volcano and to Hilo (we especially recommend the Thai Pizza with tofu at Tina's Gourmet Garden Cafe in Hilo). We came here to relax and did just that.

PARADISE FOUND

  • 5 of 5
This house was by far the best vacation rental we have ever been in. The location is simply magical and the house allowed for complete submersion in vacation mode. We were a family of 3 (one small child included) and were very comfortably accommodated. In fact, it was so comfortable that we found ourselves lazing around the house for 3-4 days at a time while the rental car sat in the driveway! Why go anywhere when you have everything you need out your back door? We were in and out of the warm water from morning until night every day for two weeks.
The house is right on the ocean and is situated between 2 empty lots so there is ample privacy. The Waiopae Tidepools and Champagne Pind are right down the road, but honestly, the marine life right in your own tidepools is more diverse. And you have them to yourself! Every time we went out tidepool hopping by foot or snorkeling, we discovered a new species that we hadn't seen the day before. Kapoho is in a a sort of rain shadow so even though you are on the "rainy side" of the Big Island, the weather is gorgeous. Sun for most of the day with showers mostly at night and in the morning.
The house had everything imaginable. Water shoes in every size, boogie boards, snorkels, sunscreen. The kitchen was extremely well stocked. A gorgeous home in a spectacular location. We are already planning next year's vacation there....

GREAT STAY IN KAPOHO!

  • 5 of 5
Our family of four (2 boys, 11 and 15 plus parents) stayed here for three days before going to Kona side.

We chose this place for its closer location to the volcano than a hotel in Hilo. What was even cooler, though, was its location near the tidepools. We loved going out and wading around our house and swimming in the pond and seeing all the wild life.

The house was amazing -- the layout was very functional and very comfortable. My kids particularly liked hanging around the kitchen island, drawing, reading or playing games. My husband and I liked the outside decks just to hang out and watch the water. Outdoor shower and toilet were a big hit with everyone.

After staying here a couple of days, I realized how clean the place must have been when we first got there <grin>. There are lots of decks and places where dirt could linger and really, it was all so clean. We also appreciated that it was well-stocked from kitchen condiments to bathroom necessities.

We went to the volcano twice during our stay (once at night in the drizzly fog) and also stopped into the Lava Trees state park (surprisingly charming). Closer to Hilo, we went to the Lyman Museum (incredibly friendly staff) because my son likes minerals and they had a small but impressive collection. Also very impressed (ok, maybe not the 11 year old) with the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden on the Hamakua Coast.

The area around the condo was very quiet when we were there and you are a good 1/2 hour away from the town. If you are looking for the big resort experience, this is not it. If you are looking for a different Hawaii experience, then this might be your place.

The owners normally ask for a 5 day stay but squeezed us in for our 3 day stay since there was an opening (thank you!). Their communication was stellar and the way they took care of their place was amazing. Overall, a great stay!
