Chatham has received the 'Distinctive Destinations Award Recipient' from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It's waters and history are diverse and unique. The Cockle Cove community of South Chatham is the best kept secret; rural and surrounded by vital marshlands including a salt water pond and channel to Nantucket Sound large enough for a 21' outboard center console sport fishing boat. An awe inspiring 15 minute kayak ride brings you to the mouth of Eel Creek also known as 'The Jetty', a remote stretch of barrier beach there brings you even closer to nature and further from the crowds. There's an alternative rustic path along preserved marshlands called colloquially 'The Cranberry Cart Path' that brings you to Cockle Cove Beach or the Jetty. Hightide swims are warmed by The Gulf Stream. Large striped bass, bluefish, snowy Egrets, Blue Heron, King Fisher, Osprey, Great Horned Owl, Red-tail Hawk and many migratory seabirds are seen daily from the Pondhouse deck
Other Activities: Kayaking from the landing visible from The Pondhouse is very popular for locals and tourists alike. Embark on a journey around the salt pond, down the salt river and out into Nantucket Sound. Experience Great Blue Herons, Kingfishers, Osprey, Striped Bass and Bluefish. Fish from a kayak, pond edge or The Jetty at the mouth of the river. Kayaks can be rented and delivered. Try www.goose.com and http://www.insidecapecod.com for rental and delivery.
