Janie's Haven was built with love and care in 2000, with hardwood floors, granite counters, and an open floor plan with French doors opening onto a large deck overlooking the ocean. Fall has the best sunsets over Western Bay, on the lee side of Mount Desert Island. Peace and seclusion are yours at the end of a quiet dead-end road, yet the house lies within easy distance from Acadia National Park and picturesque Bar Harbor. This beautiful log home sits in a meadow on the edge of a cedar forest, with a short walk to a semi-private stairway to access the beach. Hike and see the sights by day, go out for a gourmet dinner in Bar Harbor, then come home and relax by the wood stove. Fall foliage and winter cross-country skiing are spectacular in Acadia, with over 55 miles of carriage roads. The bedrooms are large and comfortable, with new mattresses and each with its own full bath. We are now very excited to offer hi-speed internet, a rare luxury in our area. We are also now booking for 2010.

Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island abounds with recreational possibilities. Acadia has over 55 miles of carriage trails for biking, walking, cross-country skiing (we do winter rentals as well!) or horseback riding (in some areas), and plenty of hiking trails throughout the mountains and lakes. Drive to Sand Beach and go swimming, or tour up Cadillac Mountain for incredible views. Acadia also has summer programming for birders or families with children. Sea kayaking is popular for all ages, or go on a whale watch or nature cruise. Bar Harbor itself is bustling in the summer, with excellent restaurants, a pizza movie theater, mini golf and other tourist attractions. On the 'quiet side' of the island, Acadia Repertory Theater provides more sophisticated entertainment, or enroll children in Southwest Harbor's Summer Festival of the Arts. Take a day cruise to Nova Scotia, or travel up the coast to Schoodic Peninsula and watch the waves crash to shore.

Additional information about rental rates

  • Maine requires a 7% lodging tax. UPDATE: in 2010, lodging tax will increase to 8.5%.
  • Our changeover date is on Saturday. Check-in is Saturday at 3 PM, and check-out is the following Saturday at 10 AM to allow for a thorough cleaning between guests. After Labor Day, our changeover day and check-in times become flexible to accommodate weekend visitors. During the off-peak season, our rates are $200 per night (2 night minimum) and $100 per night for each additional night, whether weekend or weekday rental.

    During the peak season, we are unfortunately only able to accommodate week-long rentals due to the high demand at that time.

    The cleaning fee applies only to renters with dogs. 20% of the fee will be donated to our local SPCA. Sorry, no cats allowed. The cleaning fee does not cover smoking. No smoking is allowed anywhere on the grounds of Janie's Haven. Smoking will result in forfeiture of security deposit. Thank you for understanding.
  • To reserve your spot, we ask for a 50% deposit of rent, tax, and pet fee (if applicable). The second half of the payment is due 30 days prior to your arrival date, along with a $300 security deposit. We accept personal check or PayPal. Please be advised that we cannot accept credit or debit cards at this time, either personally or through PayPal. Security deposits are returned within two weeks of departure. Directions to the cabin will not be sent until the check for the second half of the payment clears.

    For multi-week stays or returning guests, we do offer a discount. Please inquire if this applies to you, and thank you for considering Janie's Haven!

  • The master bedroom is very large, with vaulted ceilings, a brand new luxury king size mattress, and a walk-in closet. The bathroom contains a Jacuzzi tub and granite counters. The loft area also has access to the master bath. The loft area has two twin foam mattresses that can be set up if needed (please indicate in reservation). Downstairs, the guest bedroom also boasts a walk-in closet, with a queen mattress and full bath. The basement is fully finished, with laundry, a full bath, hardwood floors, French doors and large windows facing the ocean. With two twin beds and a lounge area, the basement is a perfect rec room for children while parents relax upstairs.

Notes: We are very pleased to be able to offer cable internet access at our cabin. It has never been possible before, and we hope that it will make your stay easier and less stressful. Cell phone signal, however, is unreliable (Verizon seems to work well). We do provide a reliable landline with unlimited local calls. During the off-season, we do not provide satellite or cable television, though we have a large library of movies and books and a game table. We will have basic cable installed for the summer season 2010. Cats are not permitted, but well-behaved dogs are considered with a pet fee. We are dog-lovers, and we want to help people have vacations with canine family members. However, we do ask that dogs not be left alone uncrated in the house, as even the calmest of dogs can develop separation anxiety in an unfamiliar setting and cause damage to the woodwork. Please inquire about pets when booking your reservation.

The perfect 'off-season' romantic getaway!: Leaf season is my favorite time to relax in Acadia. The deck overlooks Western Bay, and fall has the most spectacular sunsets of the year. The view of the ocean also showcases a huge maple that turns brilliant red. The days are warm, but the nights are cold, and we curl up in front of the woodstove at the end of a day hiking in the Park. With a brand new king mattress in the master bedroom, Janie's Haven becomes an ideal refuge for couples who just need to get away from it all after the summer crush has come and gone. In the winter, Acadia becomes a haven for cross-country skiers, with over 55 miles of carriage trails to explore. Plan a group outing for the weekend, or steal away for a whole week of peace as the snow falls over the ocean.

We seldom repeat vacations, choosing to experience different places. But this house is so wonderful, I'd love to get back again next year. By far the nicest vacation house I've ever rented. The location is great. It is easy to access any part of Mt. Desert Island from here...much better than staying on one side of the island and having to trek from one side to the other for activities in different parts of Acadia. The house was as described and exceded our expectations. Cristina was a pleasure to work with. I'd highly recommend it to anyone. Thanks Cristina!

Great week in Acadia/ Bar Harbor

Had a great week with family in Acadia and Bar Harbor. House is just over bridge from Mt. Desert Island and close to two lobster pounds. Enjoyed kayaking , hiking and biking in the park and eating at restaurants in Bar Harbor.

House was even nicer than picutres, plenty of room, 3 baths, kids, had their own bedrooms, spacious living room/fireplace area etc., everything was great.
