If you have ever wished to stay in a storybook cottage, you need to look no further! Pretty Byrd Cottage is just enchanting! My fourteen year old grandson and I stayed from July 8th to the 11th and I could have stayed forever! The picturesque setting on the perfectly landscaped island is just breathtaking. Everything inside the cottage is exquisite, gorgeous antique pieces blended perfectly with all the modern conveniences. Cathy and Rhet are most gracious hosts! A vase of cut flowers and a bottle of wine immediately indicated “Welcome” when we opened the front door! The refrigerator was stocked with everything you can imagine, fresh fruit, bagels, muffins, a selection of gourmet coffee and of course an English Tea Box complete with a lovely selection of tea. The linens are luxurious, smooth, high thread count, embellished with decorative trim. There are two porches, one off the formal dining room and another off the master bedroom. The loft was great for my grandson’s private space and there is a balcony overlooking the lake and gardens there, as well!
My grandson and I peddle boated around the lake, fed the amazing fish from the footbridge which leads to the cottage, played cards and games on the porch and went kayaking in the bay. I got some much needed relaxation time just sitting in the garden reading or on the beach while my grandson kayaked solo. The peddle boat and kayaks were provided by our hosts, Cathy and Rhet Tignor.
When we arrived, we unpacked and went on our only excursion away from the property ... we had forgotten to pack our sunscreen! We went out to make that purchase and picked up a few things at the grocery store to round out our dinner menus. A nice gas grill was provided so we planned to cook out and eat at the cottage. My grandson was the grill master, I prepared our side dishes and that just added to our "home away from home" experience. While we were out, we discovered a great place to eat, The Exmore Diner. My grandson had never seen a real "diner" before, so that was fun and the food, service and prices were excellent!
This is a perfect vacation or romantic getaway for a couple or an adult and mature young man or young lady who enjoys a quiet, quality time vacation with a grandparent or parent(s). Young children who need constant supervision and entertainment would not suit this environment.
