About Sam Hunt

I have been coming to Kiawah since 1962, when my parents bought a house on the Island from Mr. Royal. It was a jungle island then, with a rickety wood bridge, dirt roads, 12 houses on Eugenia Avenue by the beach (many are still there), and incredible nature. We have loved Kiawah and the Charleston area. There is never a dull day.

Sam Hunt purchased this house in 1996

Why Sam Hunt chose Kiawah Island

Our house is a sunny, comfortable, refuge next to quite lagoon on a quiet street. Waking up each morning and seeing the fish jumping in the lagoon out of the glass bedroom sliding doors is a beautiful start to the day.

A great time

  • 5 of 5

We were very happy with the house and its quiet location. The décor in the living room was very comfortable, just right for our family. The master bedroom is really pleasant and light, with it's own TV, access to the deck, and a great view of the lagoon. The master bath is spacious, and includes a large Jacuzzi. We loved the comfortable, open design of the living room, dining room and kitchen- perfect for socializing and relaxing together, and the large dining room table was a real plus. The kitchen was equipped with everything you would want for cooking and serving.

The deck was great, quiet and with a view of the lagoon, which is only 30 feet or so from the deck. We rented bikes and had fun biking around the island. There are well-maintained bike trails everywhere, and the terrain is flat- just our speed. We especially enjoyed biking on the beach. The house is not within walking distance of the beach, but it was easy to bike there, just 7 or 8 minutes through some pretty areas. We would definitely return to this house again.

Wonderful. Beyond our expectations

  • 5 of 5

We have finally had a chance to post about our stay in this wonderful house. My family stayed in this lovely home on Kiawah during the last week of July and had the best and most relaxing vacation of our very busy lives. The house was in a perfect location to run away from our stressful life (2 teenagers & a child with a disability) & allow all of us to relax & explore what the island had to offer . We biked with our Autistic daughter on the beach for miles almost every day, & also through beautiful bike paths. (you don’t need to bring bikes as the weekly rental is very reasonable & the bikes are in great condition & very sturdy). My husband & son spent many days fishing in the surf. And even spent a day on a charter fishing trip near by.(The guy at Dick’s sporting goods helped rig us up with some local setups). We took nature walks, appreciated the natural surroundings (including the alligators, deer and other wildlife), and loved the wide varieties of great Southern food. The house is in a beautiful, quiet, location overlooking a lovely lagoon. My son fished off the big back deck as we watched the eagle in the tree keeping an eye on him fishing each day looking for his meal. It was unreal! This house felt like home from the minute we stepped through the door. We loved the sense of cozy intimacy for us to return to after a busy day. The master bedroom is huge, beautiful and very comfortable. You wake up each morning to see the lagoon, and often jumping fish. Grandma & my daughter picked the cute girlie room upstairs with twin bed (very nice size). The boys had their own room next door. The house is warm and very comfortable, providing a welcome and quiet retreat that made us relax and feel like we were truly living in a home away from home which made our life very easy for that week because of our circumstances. The house was fully stocked with everything we needed. We cooked, we baked, set-up for picnics on the beach & enjoyed great restaurants on the island minutes away. The owner was an absolute pleasure to work with, and made everything easy. We have vacationed at other ocean locations in South and North Carolina, but this Island called Kiawah is definitely our favorite. We had a terrific family vacation in this wonderful island retreat. We are already planning a return to this beautiful Island home.

We enjoyed our stay and have already made reservations to return. There are too many great things about the house and location for our needs to name them all. But we will mention a few, the house was a great location for fishing and biking and hiking, quiet street, the house was clean and had everything we needed, the master bath remodel, the painting inside and outside, the solar light in the kitchen, the mirror over the kitchen sink was nice to look at the water while working there, the light switches marked for less confusion, the pond for fishing and crabbing, the list goes on. We did not have any problems and everything was in working order with the house. We are anxious to come back. Sam and Wyndham Rentals were very cooperative before, during and after our stay.

A beautiful home in an extraordinary place!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of three adults rented this beautiful home on idyllic Kiawah Island for a week in April 2014 and can’t recommend it highly enough. The island itself is a blend of wild lowcountry coastal landscapes and (very) premium resort homes in a quiet setting that affords maximum privacy. The forest, marshes, lagoons and neighborhoods are connected by miles of paved bike trails designed for riders of all ages and abilities. We are not golfers, but the tournament-venue golf courses are stunning enough that real players might stay a week and never leave the island. Never crowded and accessible at all points along the island shore, the broad sandy beach is ten miles long and ideal for hiking and biking. Freshfields Village, a little town at the entry to the residential portion of the island, has a nice selection of stores (including an excellent grocery), restaurants and cafes. Kiawah is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the South Carolina coastline.

The house itself is comfortable, roomy, well furnished and immaculately clean, with two screened porches and a large deck facing the lagoon. The lagoon is peaceful and always visible from the large living room via the wall of windows on the back of the house. The master bedroom and master bath are generous and private, with the other two bedrooms and bathroom situated at the opposite end of the house, a nice layout for families. Also included are a two car garage, full laundry, outdoor shower and kitchen well stocked with cooking utensils and table wear, refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, microwave, etc. The satellite tv system and wi-fi both worked very well for us. To top it off, the owners of the home are friendly, helpful, well-organized and went out of their way to make us feel welcome, even providing a detailed list of preferred local restaurants and points of interest. Honestly, the value we received renting this property was extraordinary, a very fine home at a most reasonable price.

As much as we enjoyed Kiawah Island, it also served us well as a base from which to explore historic Charleston, about 40 minutes away, at most, by local roads. We also ventured to points south, including Beaufort, and explored some of the restored plantations inland along the river. If you enjoy lowcountry cuisine, you will never exhaust the varied, excellent offerings in this region of the state. We loved our visit to Kiawah Island and are grateful to the home’s owners for making us feel at home!

Soothing Honeymoon Retreat

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had been to Kiawah before and we wanted to experience it again...for our honeymoon. Having looked at multiple condos, we decided to rent a private residence for our stay and this home was exactly what we wanted in every way. The house is beautiful, clean and well maintained. The living space is open with wonderful views of the lagoon. The back deck and screened in porch were a nice amenity - peaceful and quiet for enjoying morning coffee and breakfasts while taking in the nature. We saw tons of deer, numerous birds and fish jumping relaxing. The photos are true to reality, with everything as pictured. The owner, Sam, was wonderful to work with throughout the rental process, very prompt and more than happy to answer questions about the property and Kiawah - he has a long history and relationship with the island.

The beach is about 7-8 minute bike ride from the house, which worked out great for us. The trails were easy to get to and enjoyable to ride, which we did most days. The house had some beach equipment (chairs and the like), but we opted to rent chairs and an umbrella for several days - it was just easier. We spent a day in Charleston which is about 40 minutes from the island - took the ferry over to the Ft. Sumter Memorial which was a must for my husband and had a spectacular lunch afterwards at Slightly North of Broad (highly recommend). Freshfields Village has some neat shops (especially the local pottery one) and the grocery is very convenient.

We had an amazing time during our stay and cannot wait to go back again. We would rent from Sam again in a heartbeat.
