We know privacy is important to many of our guests and we totally understand that sharing the house with us the owners might be a concern. But we have taken many steps to ensure you can have the amount of privacy you desire. Please take a look at the review from a recent guest who had some concerns and ho we were able to meet and exceed their needs.
The Military Couple From Savannah: We are a military couple living in Savannah, GA missing our roots in Pittsburgh, PA and we were looking
to go on a vacation for a week before my husband had to leave for a few months. The vacation was last
minute because of how the military works. We got online and were looking for vacation rentals for the
Smoky Mountains. Three of our Main needs that we wanted were 1.) Privacy 2.) Quiet 3.) Access. Oh and pet accommodating. (our dog Agnes is our only family member) We are hikers, rafters and just up to anything. Callie, Dave, Daniel and their dog Midgie were all very accommodating of our needs.
We were extremely hesitant to go with a rental that we were going to be sharing the space with the
owners. We are constantly around people with our jobs and need some time to get away and get back to
the Mountains! So we were pleasantly surprised with the Privacy that was given to us in the lower level of the house.
Access: On top of privacy and needing a quiet peace of mind place we wanted a location that was not too far
away from attractions or different parks. RiverDance is located just a couple of miles from Hot Springs
with is a quaint little town. It has a few restaurants and the Appalachian trail runs right through it. There
were a large amount of trails that were right around the area. The more you explore the more you find.
Asheville is only about 35 minutes from RiverDance and there is so much to do there if you are not all
about hiking 24/7. Plus there are many little towns located within the mountains that you can stumble
upon while you are out. All and All I will come back to RiverDance because of the Great people that run it
and the location. Callie and her family were so welcoming and willing to help us out with anything that we
needed. This family is so pleasant and aware of your privacy it is a great combination.
Our journey to the breathtaking mountains of the Carolina's began over a decade ago, and it is a dream come true. It was time to get away from the cold and fast pace of the Mid-West and create our year round Timber Frame home. We live in RiverDance full-time and are looking forward to having you as our guest. The idea from the start was to share RiverDance with others who want to venture out and explore all that Western North Carolina has to offer.
Callie Wellendorf purchased this house in 2006
Rated the #1 bed and breakfast in the Hot Springs area for multiple years. A setting clearly reflected on our website draws guests to our listing. Significant outdoor living space within a setting that speaks of relaxation coupled with opportunities to take advantage of all the outdoor options within close proximity to RiverDance. Privacy and spacious accommodation's. Hot tub overlooking the gorge on its own attractive deck space. Not only your own suite level, but a whole middle layer of the house for you to enjoy. Continental breakfast each morning. Inviting hospitality. An experience you will not want to miss.
Relaxing environment, views that inspire, inviting and private personal living space on your own suite level, outdoor adventure, close distance to the hot springs, area rich in artistic talent, blend of the best parts of a B&B and vacation rental. This is our full time home making hospitality a key part of your stay.
I was looking for a vacation rental from which my son and I could explore the Smoky Mountains. Because he's autistic, it was important to find a home where he would be comfortable. Within 10 minutes of our arrival, he was sprawled on the couch like he'd lived there his whole life.
If you seek a party pad with a lot of nightlife, this ain't it.
But if you seek a peaceful mountain home from which to base your adventures and feel as if you're part owner, you owe it to yourself and your companions to investigate RiverDance.
Mountain views from nearly every window, a cliff-top view of the river far below, privacy when you want it and a family atmosphere when you don't. Funny thing about the river - while RiverDance is perched 300ft. above, the canyon's shape carries the sound of rippling water through your window.
Weather was too chilly for us to enjoy the deck and Carolina Porch (early April), but both are extremely inviting and I'm sure much time could be spent there from late spring into late fall.
While Bear River Lodge is considered a residential development, on the 1/2-mile-long drive up the mountain you only pass a few other homes.
I heartily recommend this vacation rental to:
1. Those who wish to explore backcountry adventures like hiking, paddling, fishing, bicycling, sight-seeing, etc. We hiked on the Appalachian Trail, visited Smoky Mtns. National Park, climbed Mt. Mitchell, NC (highest peak east of the Mississippi) and Clingman's Dome (2nd highest peak).
2. Couples/Families who wish to divide and conquer - one element into the woods/streams/mountains to play, while the other hunts for antiques or enjoys the cultural diversity of Asheville, just 30 minutes away.
3. Those who take a vacation for relaxation. A lot of books could be read on/near the porch/deck/fireplace, etc.
RiverDance is not a vacation rental slapped together as an investment opportunity. This is a beautiful, well-designed home built for the long haul by a wonderful couple who enjoy sharing their home with those who cherish mountain life as much as they do.
We will return and I've already recommended a stay at RiverDance to several close friends and family members.
BTW - I've rented vacation homes in three other locales throughout the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Hand's down, RiverDance was the most enjoyable and most memorable.
Clean, modern and majestic. Callie and Dave have a wonderful place to sit on a mountain top and watch the deep valley below and that nature has to offer.
Linda and I are coming back for sure and probable with another couple to take this all in again.
Callie and Dave are warm and accommodating people with your comfort at the top of the list.
Thank you so much!
Terry and Linda
If you like comfort, great accomadations and really nice people...this is the spot. My wife and 9 month old Golden stopped by to see my old friend Callie and her mountain retreat on our way to Hilton Head Is...and we are really glad we did!
Wonderful location on top of the mountain.....the "river runs through it" below and is a great place for a peaceful walk.
Thanks Callie and Dave!
When we stumbled across this listing while we were planning our Valentine's Getaway, we felt like we'd found something great.
But once we got there, we were completely blown away by the beauty of the scenery and of the home as well.
Callie and Dave were the perfect hosts! They were caring enough to provide breakfast and give us advice as to which trails had the best views, as well as which areas had the most potential for exploring. Not to mention, they stayed in contact with us the entire time before arriving, making us feel welcomed.
We'd highly recommend staying in the downstairs, as you have some privacy, but still feel connected.
All this is available for an affordable price, making this the ideal weekend getaway.
Plus, there is a hot tub with an incredible view of the mountains and the stars.
Staying at RiverDance for the first time is like finding “buried treasure” in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina, and once you have been there, you want to go back again and again. The view from the porches overlooking the mountains, canyon, and river are truly spectacular and RiverDance has the rockers, over-stuffed chairs, and porch swing to help you experience its sunrises, sunsets, and changing cloud patterns. The two suites – Tree Tops and River Rock – are spacious, clean and tastefully decorated with countless details to provide a warm and relaxing atmosphere, at a modest price that is unbelievable for the quality. The fact that there are only two suites insures that guests are NOT lost in the crowd as in larger B&B’s, and yet, you can be completely private and alone if you prefer. What makes RiverDance stand out however are the warm, relaxed and fun personalities of its owners. Whatever you want, or whatever you need, is their priority while you stay with them and their genuine desire is to make your experience at RiverDance the best it can be. They are well informed about the best restaurants, hiking trails, area recreation, and driving directions and readily share their knowledge, maps, and pamphlets when asked. It is a wonderful, warm place to get away from the busyness of jobs and schedules, to be refreshed and renewed – whether by hiking, fishing, zip lining, rafting, or just enjoying the views from the hot tub or the wrap-around porch with its giant fireplace.
We just spent the most relaxing weekend we've had in some time at River Dance! Dave and Callie have created an incredible Bed & Breakfast with an amazing view! It is so easy to relax as you sit on one of the beautiful porches and admire the view, sit beside the outdoor fireplace and become mesmerized in the flames, soak in the hot tub while looking out over the mountains, rock in one of the rocking chairs while listening to the sounds of nature and the babbling stream below, or simply resting in your room looking out the windows at the incredible scenic view. Callie and Dave frequently checked to make sure we had everything we needed, offered their kitchen and grill for our use, and made great recommendations for activities and restaurants in the area. It was a great place to get away from the business of our everyday lives and still have easy access to Hot Springs, hiking trails and rafting. We can't wait to go back again!

Vacation in Madison County, the 'Jewel of the Blue Ridge', two miles from the Appalachian Trail and the quaint spa town of Hot Springs. History is alive in Madison County! Whether it's arts and crafts that interest you, outdoor sports, agri-tourism complete with u-pick and teaching farms, or you're simply looking for a place to completely get away from it all, consider visiting us in Madison County for your next excursion.
Rolling hills, green as an Irish landscape or painted in lovely shades of ochre and beige in winter, rugged mountains ringing the horizon, successive switchbacks on mountains ascents and descents, cows grazing on steep mountain pastures, farms and tobacco barns tucked into folds of the landscape. Located just 30 minutes from Asheville, one can go from wildly dramatic scenery to pastoral peace simply by turning a corner.
