The cabin decor has a bear theme with kitchen ware, upholstery and pictures depicting bears. Don't worry the real ones are hibernating this time of year. It is cozy, comfortable and private with lots of room outdoors to explore. Cross country ski, snowshoe, go sliding or snow mobile right out the front door. See the many famous local attractions and three major ski areas. Come enjoy the beauty of it all.
Water Play: There are quite a few bodies of water near Black Bear Log Cabin. The property is bordered by the Pemi (Pemigewasset) River which is great for tubing, kayaking, rafting, swimming, canoeing, and fishing. The Eastman Brook also flows through the property, good for fishing and swimming. There are two ponds on the property, one on each side of the brook. The Palazzi Pond is shallow and has some Pickerel and Perch. Waterest Pond is quite deep on one end, 25' and has turtles, horned pout, beavers and a beaver hut.
Snow Play: We get quite a bit of snow each winter here in the Pemi Valley. There is usually enough natural snow to enjoy winter sports. If you have your own equipment you can snow-shoe, slide, cross-country ski and snow mobile right out the front door of Black Bear Log Cabin. If you need to rent or want to go farther there are many rentals in town, 10 minutes away, and many trails and ski areas to explore. About Ruth Bradley
The Bradley Family has been in Thornton since 1867. They had a small farm with woodlots and pasture land for their cattle, sheep, horses and other animals. Farming, logging and hunting sustained them. They purchased more pasture & forest land in Woodstock in 1946.
In 1983, we, the fourth generation of the family, decided to develop some of the pasture land and forest land in Woodstock. We would make it a formal campground, instead of a drop by campground, to help provide a steady income during the Summer months.
Ruth Bradley purchased this cabin in 1946
Why Ruth Bradley chose Woodstock
This, Woodstock, part of the Bradley Farm was used as a pasture for horses and cattle from 1946 to 1983 but third generation owner, Richard Bradley also allowed friends and others to camp on the property. It was, and is, a very appealing piece of property. The site has a beautiful little brook running through it to the Pemigewasset River, which borders it, and both cool wooded areas and grassy open areas along with gorgeous views of the mountains; west across the hayfield and north toward Franconia Notch. People were always asking for permission to camp there.
What makes this cabin unique
In 1984 the Campground Office building was built by a family member of the fourth generation of the Bradley family, Ralph Bradley and his wife Ruth. They also built graveled roads which defined the area of the campground, built facilities and and put in water.
The building was designed as a house that could be used as a live-in office. It has two floors to it with one bedrooom on the main floor and three bedrooms on the other. A very good size for renting in the off season, from November to May. The office has a beautiful view across the pond of the mountains on the other side of the river. It offers one of the most scenic views around in any season and is especially beautiful in foliage season. The brook is a favorite place to play on a hot summer day. In the winter the property is 100 acres of snowshoe, cross country and snowmobile fun. Just step out the door and off you go.
