Western Maine is known for its gorgeous (and many hidden) lakes scattered throughout the region. It is not atypical to see wildlife upclose, including deer, eagles, loons, or even moose. There is excellent fishing, boating, water-skiing & swimming. Western Maine is also known for the prestigious Sunday River Ski Resort as well as the family-oriented Mt. Abram & Shawnee Peak, located in Bridgton. Sunday River just initiated night skiing and revealed its new lift on December 20th, hosting the great Chondola with heated enclosure holding eight. North Conway, NH is an hour's drive through the New England countryside; along with skiing, train rides and other outdoor attractions, you can also shop at several tax-free outlet malls. Travelling an hour East, you will hit Portland, with Freeport just an additional 15 minutes further; make sure to visit L.L. BEAN while in Freeport. Maine offers both the quiet & relaxing atmosphere you want, along with plenty of outdoor activities.
