Solitude and Serenity in the California Alps

Denise & family Sacramento, CA
Review Submitted: September 15, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
Kyle's Cabin is a beautifully crafted log cabin nestled in an idyllic secluded setting surrounded by trees with a verandah overlooking the valley. The furnishings and decor are rustic and charming. We visited during the summertime and had a delightful trip hiking the nearby trails as well as soaking in the Grover Hot Springs. And for anglers, the fishing is excellent in the West and East Carson Rivers as well as in the Indian Creek Reservoir and multitude of lakes, all within a short drive. We caught our limit of three to four pound trout!

Dianna is a warm and engaging hostess who goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome. Kyle's Cabin is a special retreat that you will rave about to your friends and family.

"Starlight Lodge is the last word in rustic luxury. To stay there is to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature without having to rough it. You can look out through its vast windows and see nothing but 40 miles of pastures and pine-covered hills. You can soak in a hot tub on the deck on a frosty winter night and see more stars than you can remember ever being in the sky before. Inside, surrounded by rich woodwork and custom furniture, warmed by a log fire and hostess Dianna Mitzner's delicious food, with a grand piano to play, a library to browse in and an eclectic art collection to admire, you'll feel pampered within an inch of your life. If you seek creative inspiration, fine trout fishing or just some time away from it all, head for Woodfords and this unique retreat!

Our family has stayed in the Starlight Lodge in Markleeville near Lake Tahoe a number of times and the experience has been extraordinary. The spectacular timber frame lodge and Kyle's cabin are beautiful in their peaceful setting in the pines overlooking an expansive meadow and mountain range. The soaring architecture is inspiring and the inlaid woods of the staircase and ceilings elegant. Yet one feels comforted and cozy in every room of the lodge surrounded by Navaho rugs and western art and books and glowing fires in the river rock fireplaces.

One of Diana's delicous hearty breakfasts in the spectacular sun filled dining room or on the verandah, as deer move silently across the open spaces between the trees is memorable.

This Lodge and Cabin should be a destination for anyone who is looking for an especially wonderful mountain respite, complete with fabulously comfortable beds, down comforters, wool Pendleton blankets, big soft towels, heated stone floors, hot tub, and great walks in any direction.

Diana is a warm and gifted hostess; knowledgeable about the beautiful alpine area around the lodge and eager to make one's visit the very best. For all the gracious hospitality that Diana provides her guests, we find her rates more than reasonable and we can hardly wait to return.

We booked the Starlight lodge for our family as we attended our sons wedding in June 2007 in Markleevlle. Dianna had everything in place and ready for our stay. We had total privacy, in such a great secluded location. We saw wildlife right from the deck and enjoyed the spacious custom home for entertaining. We relaxed in the hot tub and on the many decks with a glass of wine in the evening. The peaceful atmosphere really took the pressure off as we enjoyed the wedding and activities surrounding it. We too extended our stay, and are already talking about a return trip, perhaps for a family re-union with our new family in Markleeville. Lots to do and see in the surrounding area and great restaurants in the area. We also had guests in Kyle's cabin and it too was quaint and very comfortable. Dianna really puts on a top notch operation and was very flexible with our changing needs. The setting and accomadations are 5 star as far as we're concerned. This is a place where Friendships are kindled. Thank-You for making the wedding so special.
