Very Dirty

We had a great time! The lake and the beach with the fire pit right there were wonderful, all of us but especially my grand children thoroughly enjoyed every minute the weather allowed them to be outside near or most often in the water. We spent many hours sitting on the deck just enjoying the view and fresh air. Everyone enjoyed the fire pit next to the lake, the smores were extra good while listening to the waves lapping the beach and the loons in the distance. We enjoyed the proximity to many northern Michigan sites and attractions.
However, we did have young children along and I must point out our great concern with the cleanliness of the cottage.
From the start I had to fix the toilet at least once a day to keep it from running constantly. The ball float is constantly getting caught on the flapper or the chain comes off the flapper.
I had to plunge out the bathroom sink the first day also as it was plugged up so bad it barely drained at all. That drain was full of nasty crap that had been there for quite some time.
The bathroom floor stunk like a cat litter box, especially around the toilet and the shower. We ended up running a fan in there almost all of the time to try and dry it out as the carpet was wet. We ended up using “Fabreeze” daily in order to make it tolerable. Additionally the floor around the shower is extremely spongy indicating that it has been wet for quite some time.
The front bedroom had fiberglass insulation protruding from many areas in the paneling and along the ceiling, even in the knot holes in the paneling. Not only was it just plain ugly to see but it is a health hazard.
The general condition of all of the carpeting throughout was bad, it was stained, soiled, smelly and damp.
The kitchen cupboards had not seen a damp rag in quite some time and were quite dirty.
The oven was very problematic to light.
There were several switches and plugs that had white tape over them, not sure why but we surely noticed how dark the kitchen was.
I have rented cottages, homes and condominiums, both in and out of michigan, and have never exerienced a place that was so dirty.
I know at this point in time that I would never recommend the cottage on Black Lake to anyone for a rental, at least in the condition it is in.
Owner's Response: I'm sorry these renters felt that our "cottage" was dirty. Not once did I receive a telephone call advising that there was something wrong with the toilet or the stove. (Phone number listed on wall) As far as the cat litter smell in the bathroom, all I can say is that it must have been due to the toilet running all the time, as we have never had a cat in the home. We would have gladly come over to fix the problem and/or have a service man come in. As far as the other remarks regarding the cottage, I've never had anyone state such a negative remark. In fact, I've had nothing but positive remarks from renters in person. I'm truly sorry this renter felt the way they did.
