What a house!

  • 5 of 5
Casa Colonial exceeded our expectations. It was so large. The downstairs half bath made it so convenient, as well. I loved my master bedroom with the huge batch and walk in shower. Plenty of towels were available, then birds came every day to enjoy the birdseed we bought, and the easy walk to the Malecon was perfect. The cleaning lady came and even made my bed. This house is a traditional jewel and we are grateful for the opportunity to have enjoyed it. One note, there is a new high wall being built right next door for a three story (four?) building, and we could hear and see the workers. But the backyard was so lovely and fun that it did not bother us, really!

Family friendly

Fantastic character home at a great location! Tons of room, charm and character. We loved picking lemons from the tree by the pool and mixing it into our freshly squeezed orange juice or make lemon juice by the hand press in the kitchen. Walking distance to Malecon, open air market, baker, all unique experiences for our young children. The one minor criticism is that the pool is shaded most of the day and consequently was unenjoyably cold for us adults and limited the use for our more daring children as well. Brian was great support with ideas where to eat or go for day trips. We would highly recommend Todos Santos as a daytrip destination.

3-generation vacation in a close-in, central location

  • 4 of 5
To be clear, I seldom give a 5-star review. I was not disappointed in our week at Casa Colonial. Our 3-generation party of 9, including three young children, had plenty of space and comfortable beds. The rooms are large, and it was nice to have two and a half baths. The large bathroom is accessed through the master bedroom, which is sometimes inconvenient. Using that huge tile shower in the morning was delightful, with the sun streaming in through a big window directly into the shower. (Privacy is not an issue, as the bathroom is on the second floor.) There were plenty of thirsty towels.

The kitchen is large, and well equipped. We used the large citrus juicer each morning to make fresh-squeezed orange juice. There were some basic supplies on hand, and when we arrived, the fridge was stocked with beer, a variety of soft drinks, and a bag of ice....a very nice touch.

In addition to the main 3-bedroom house, there is a casita (I think it's called a palapa because of the thatched roof) at the back of the property that we used for toddler naps. It has a queen bed and a bathroom, and is useful and attractive.
The outdoor area is nice. There is ample outdoor seating and two tables. You can usually find sun or shade, and there are flowers and lemon trees with lots of lemons. It wasn't warm enough in February to get into the unheated pool. A gate kept children from the pool area.
The dining room table was big enough to seat us all with room to spare.
My contacts with the owner were excellent. She spent considerable time on the phone telling me about the house, but also about La Paz, beaches, recreation, shopping, etc. The caretaker arranged (at my request) for the housekeeper to have our first dinner prepared for us when we arrived, which was wonderful. Because we wanted to avoid restaurant waits with small children, we actually had her cook for us five evenings, which she did at her own home and delivered. Nice, but next time I would choose fewer days. We were never sure what it would cost until the end. It was neither cheap nor expensive.
What wasn't perfect? The furniture in the living areas isn't very comfortable, especially the dining room chairs. The house is old, and it's creaky and noisy. The spiral stairway can be risky for kids. I would like more light. Wish the pool had been heated. Larger outdoor tables for eating outside.

Do I recommend it? Yes. There was a lot to like.
If you're there in March, go see the whales!

Charming, charming, charming

  • 5 of 5
This home is perfect for a mid-size to large family or a group of friends... lots of room to spread out, cook meals, play games and enjoy La Paz. We shopped at two walkable, traditional markets each day for fresh ingredients for evening meals by candlelight on the terrace or in the lovely dining room. Enjoy great morning sun on the terrace off the kitchen or by the pool reading a book and drinking coffee. The owner and caretaker were both extremely helpful. We were traveling with our baby and they made every effort to make her stay comfortable as well as ours. The home itself is clean and well appointed--comfortable with eclectic furnishings. The only thing I would have changed, would be to have the knives sharpened... for those of us who actually like to cook on vacation! :) We were a group of four adults (two couples) and a baby. Two of the three bedrooms are adjoining (with separate entrances) which makes it perfect for kids and families. Can't say enough nice things about the home and home-owner. Thank you for a great stay!

My stau at Casa Colonial

  • 4 of 5
What a charming traditional home. The house is well located for walking to La Paz's el centro. The house has fascinating decor and a wonderful garden. The pool is a great place to cool off before a siesta and after a night out. The kitchen could use some basics so that travelers are not required to buy things like salt, pepper, oils. The AC unit was a total life saver and is also in need of some attention.
Would definitely go back.

Centrally Located!!! Walking distance to everything you may need.

I stayed at Casa Colonial at the end of August 2010 for about a week. The home is located on the block right behind the old Los Arcos Hotel which is not currently open due to a labor strike. I try to visit La Paz at least every other year to fish out at Las Arenas. I stayed at the home with two of my cousins and it was very spacious for the three of us. The air conditioning worked great but it is only in the bedrooms which was not a problem for us since we were out fishing in the daytime and spent the afternoons in the pool which is shaded by a mature lime tree. The house has a brick exterior and has thick walls which helps keep it relatively cool even in August. The owner has a caretaker that is very helpful and can help you get around La Paz and make some nice recommendations if you are a first time visitor. All of the beds were comfortable and the master bedroom is very nice. The kitchen has all of the utensils you might need during your stay. I would recommend this place to family and friends. I was also able to receive an XM radio signal with my portable XMp3i receiver, Bose speaker, and standard antenna in the pool area which was nice when we returned from fishing for the day. If I could change or improve one thing it would be to add a full sized freezer so that a group of fishermen could have something more than just the over the refrigerator freezer to put fish into. All in all I would rate it 4.5 out of 5 but only because it lacks the freezer space and most people don't need it but it would be nice and potentially attract a new group of customers.
