My name is Kathleen Burwell; my husband's name is John. John was born and raised in Redding. I moved to Redding with my parents and siblings in 1966. I retired from teaching in 2010 after 37 years. John is a retired general contractor. We have no children but do have several nieces and nephews, and always at least two dogs.
Kathleen Burwell purchased this house in 1973
My parents bought the property where Battle Creek Retreat stands in 1973. They began building the house in 1976 and completed it in 1977. My mother died in 2000, my father in 2001. The house was left in a trust for nine family members. In 2008 we turned it into a vacation rental. In December of 2013 John and I purchased it from the rest of the family. It has become a fulfilling retirement project.
The beauty of the mountains can be found in the many lakes, streams, and forests. The elevation is about 4000 feet, so in a typical year, there is snow in the winter time, allowing for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and sledding. In the summer time, the main draw is Lassen Volcanic National Park. There are several points of interest within an hour's drive of Battle Creek Retreat. The springtime is beautiful with the redbud and dogwood in bloom. The fall is equally as beautiful with the many leaves of brilliant color.
Our property provides activities within a short walk. Battle Creek runs along one border of our property. In fact, our property goes to the middle of the creek. Kids and dogs alike love to play in the creek. Lake McCumber is within walking distance. There are several logging trails where guests can walk their dogs, although no motorized vehicles are allowed.
On the back patio there is a gazebo, a firepit, a picnic table, and a lot of seating. It is enclosed to give it a feel of complete privacy, although a lack of privacy is certainly not an issue at Battle Creek Retreat.
Thanks a lot for the wonderful welcome. The kids and us had a great time and really enjoyed the evening smors by the fire. we are hoping to come back soon and enjoy the cabin and the surrounding scenery.
It is our second time in your cabin and we again had a wonderful time. The kids had a blast and they loved Rebel's Retreat (bunkhouse). We hope to be back soon.
Battle Creek Retreat was the perfect destination for our 2014 Christmas Holiday with another couple. The cabin had everything we needed and more. We even had snow on Christmas Eve! In a previous review by Audra L., she described the cabin to a T. The owner ensured we were well supplied with wood for the fireplace and wood stove along with all the essentials for a perfect retreat. The cabin is so welcoming, in a great location to enjoy the outdoors and to just relax. This is my 3rd stay at the cabin and look forward to our next get a way.
We found the Battle Creek Retreat to be the perfect location for our two families to spend the New Year's holiday. There was plenty of room for numerous activities to take place; i.e. movies, puzzles, cards, hide and seek, and playing by the creek. The house was warm upon arrival, and was cozy for the entire stay. We appreciated having easy access to wood and kindling for the fire, and the Monitor heater worked great. Access to snow was only 15 minutes away at Lassen Park. We had plenty of bedding and towels for 8 people; we also appreciated the supply of paper products such as paper towels, Kleenex, napkins, and toilet paper. The Keurig coffee/hot cocoa machine was a big hit with the kids. The fenced-in patio area was a nice surprise and allowed the dog to explore outside. The kitchen had a good supply of cooking utensils, dishes, silverware, and mugs. Guests should bring condiments, spices, and baking supplies. Overall, we couldn't ask for anything more; we all loved it and had a relaxing stay. We would have loved to stay longer. We highly recommend this retreat, and may try staying here this summer.
Reviews are important to me when searching for a rental, so here's my input for future renters of Battle Creek Retreat. Upstairs has a full bath, two bedrooms with queen beds, and a large master suite with a king bed and patio. You can hear the creek from the master bedroom, and the bed was super comfortable. We were very excited to see plenty of closet space and drawers available, so we quickly unpacked for the week. When done, we still had room to stash our empty suitcases! Downstairs has two living rooms/lounging areas, full bath, kitchen, laundry area, and a sunroom/playroom. The main living room has two cozy reclining sofas, and there were plenty of throw blankets to use. The fireplace was set up for us with paper and kindling - it took one match and a couple minutes to create a raging fire! The dining area has a large table and a Keurig coffee cart with many options. Beyond the dining area is a sliding glass door leading to the sunroom/playroom with a table for 4 and a sofa. There were books, crayons, puzzles, cards, dominoes, dice, and board games. The board games were kind of dated, but it was fine since we always bring our few favorite games with us. The kitchen was fully stocked with pots, pans, utensils, and sharp knives. It had all the items a home chef would need; just bring your own food, spices, and condiments. Outside there is a fire pit (a real one! - not one of those cheap ones from Home Depot) with a large picnic table and patio furniture around it along with a gazebo with a bistro set. There is a detached bunkhouse with bunk beds. I'd imagine most kids would enjoy having their own place away from their parents while on vacation. A very short walk down behind the house is a relaxing patio with chairs over the creek. There is a path by the creek that leads out to the street, and a quick walk from there (I'd guess a little over half a mile) is a lake with a picnic area. Very cool! Oh, and there was a bottle of local wine waiting for us...very nice!
If you can convince yourself to leave the house, there are so many places go. Our main reason to visit was, of course, Lassen. The drive through the park was beautiful, and Bumpass Hell was awesome! Burney Falls was great, and pictures do not do it justice. Also worth visiting: Subway Cave, Shasta Dam, and Turtle Bay/Sundial Bridge in Redding. I would highly recommend this place, and we hope to return when ready for a 6-hour drive again.
The house is very comfortable. The owner is very careful, we find a lot of supply in the house, almost everything we need for living there. And the owner is very kind, and always ready to offer the help! My wife said it's the best cabin we ever stay. Thanks so much! We will come back if we can find opportunities to visit Lassen again!
Battle Creek Retreat was beyond my expectation. First of all, it is located at about 4000 ft elevation which gives the area the perfect temperature in August (not too hot or cold). The house itself is spacious and has all the amenities to make guests feel at home and comfortable. We spent a wonderful week with two other families who traveled all the way from Germany exploring the trails in Lassen Volcanic National Park, tasting wine at local wineries and we even discovered a gem of a waterfall and a swimming hole in McCloud State Park. Our favorite part of the vacation was sitting and eating dinner at the back patio after a day of exploration to catch up with each other. The kids had a great time by the Creek and loved making s'mores after dinner.
Kathleen is a very warm and gracious host. She was very understanding and accommodating!! Thank you, Kathleen, for sharing your home! We loved every minute of our stay and hope to come back again.
My family is a regular when it comes to exploring new places and renting cabins/homes to rest our weary heads. We booked this home when planning our trip to Lassen Volcanic National Park, and was just hoping to find it to be a comfortable place to come back to after a day of hiking. WOW....this home exceeded our expectations in all possible ways. The home was beautiful and fully equipped with anything you could need to spend time away from home. The beds and furniture were so very comfortable, the outdoor areas were so relaxing (fire pit, bistro table under a gazebo, picnic table, outdoor cushioned furniture, another deck down by the creek with chairs to enjoy nature, a deck off the master bedroom....), a bottle of local wine and fixings for s'mores left for us to enjoy, fluffy towels, a keurig with everything you need for your morning coffee, an enclosed sitting room where the children enjoyed doing one of the puzzles they found....the list could go on and on. Kathy and her family have such attention to detail when opening up their home to others. We all said that we wished we had more time there as we would have loved to take advantage of the peacefulness and comfort more than we had the time for.
In dealing with Kathy and her sister, Janis, prior to our arrival they were both so kind and helpful. Truly the type of people you feel you have known for a long time despite only corresponding via email.
Kathy and family, thank you!!! As parents, we strive to provide our children with happy memories and wonderful experiences when possible. Staying in your cabin, where it was quite apparent that your family had made wonderful memories, we were able to do this. We will certainly be back if we ever plan to get away for some relaxation.
To others looking....this is an absolute gem!!!
