Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks a lot for the wonderful welcome. The kids and us had a great time and really enjoyed the evening smors by the fire. we are hoping to come back soon and enjoy the cabin and the surrounding scenery.

It is our second time in your cabin and we again had a wonderful time. The kids had a blast and they loved Rebel's Retreat (bunkhouse). We hope to be back soon.

Just spent a week here, and it was well beyond our expectations!

  • 5 of 5
Reviews are important to me when searching for a rental, so here's my input for future renters of Battle Creek Retreat. Upstairs has a full bath, two bedrooms with queen beds, and a large master suite with a king bed and patio. You can hear the creek from the master bedroom, and the bed was super comfortable. We were very excited to see plenty of closet space and drawers available, so we quickly unpacked for the week. When done, we still had room to stash our empty suitcases! Downstairs has two living rooms/lounging areas, full bath, kitchen, laundry area, and a sunroom/playroom. The main living room has two cozy reclining sofas, and there were plenty of throw blankets to use. The fireplace was set up for us with paper and kindling - it took one match and a couple minutes to create a raging fire! The dining area has a large table and a Keurig coffee cart with many options. Beyond the dining area is a sliding glass door leading to the sunroom/playroom with a table for 4 and a sofa. There were books, crayons, puzzles, cards, dominoes, dice, and board games. The board games were kind of dated, but it was fine since we always bring our few favorite games with us. The kitchen was fully stocked with pots, pans, utensils, and sharp knives. It had all the items a home chef would need; just bring your own food, spices, and condiments. Outside there is a fire pit (a real one! - not one of those cheap ones from Home Depot) with a large picnic table and patio furniture around it along with a gazebo with a bistro set. There is a detached bunkhouse with bunk beds. I'd imagine most kids would enjoy having their own place away from their parents while on vacation. A very short walk down behind the house is a relaxing patio with chairs over the creek. There is a path by the creek that leads out to the street, and a quick walk from there (I'd guess a little over half a mile) is a lake with a picnic area. Very cool! Oh, and there was a bottle of local wine waiting for us...very nice!

If you can convince yourself to leave the house, there are so many places go. Our main reason to visit was, of course, Lassen. The drive through the park was beautiful, and Bumpass Hell was awesome! Burney Falls was great, and pictures do not do it justice. Also worth visiting: Subway Cave, Shasta Dam, and Turtle Bay/Sundial Bridge in Redding. I would highly recommend this place, and we hope to return when ready for a 6-hour drive again.

Owner's Response: Audra, wow! What a thorough and glowing description of Battle Creek Retreat! Thank you so much for taking the time to write the review. I was going to e-mail you after we saw how you left the place - everything was in its place and clean, and you even cleaned the ashes out of the fire pit. You certainly went that extra mile. John and I appreciate that tremendously. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I appreciate you letting me know the games are outdated, probably by a generation! My mission is to stock more current games in the sunroom. I'm glad you two made the most of the beautiful sights in our part of the state. We love it up here and are happy to be able to share it with others. Again, thank you! Kathy

Great place to stay

  • 5 of 5
The house is very comfortable. The owner is very careful, we find a lot of supply in the house, almost everything we need for living there. And the owner is very kind, and always ready to offer the help! My wife said it's the best cabin we ever stay. Thanks so much! We will come back if we can find opportunities to visit Lassen again!

A perfect week at a perfect location

  • 5 of 5
Battle Creek Retreat was beyond my expectation. First of all, it is located at about 4000 ft elevation which gives the area the perfect temperature in August (not too hot or cold). The house itself is spacious and has all the amenities to make guests feel at home and comfortable. We spent a wonderful week with two other families who traveled all the way from Germany exploring the trails in Lassen Volcanic National Park, tasting wine at local wineries and we even discovered a gem of a waterfall and a swimming hole in McCloud State Park. Our favorite part of the vacation was sitting and eating dinner at the back patio after a day of exploration to catch up with each other. The kids had a great time by the Creek and loved making s'mores after dinner.

Kathleen is a very warm and gracious host. She was very understanding and accommodating!! Thank you, Kathleen, for sharing your home! We loved every minute of our stay and hope to come back again.

Owner's Response: Aida, thank you so much for your very positive review. You left the place looking so nice, no one would ever guess there were ten guests there for a whole week! I didn't realize some of your companions were from Germany. We've had guests from so many interesting places. I'm grateful to my parents for making it possible for us to provide a place for people from all over the world to stay while they explore our beautiful Northern California. Thank you again, Aida!

Wish we were still there....

  • 5 of 5
My family is a regular when it comes to exploring new places and renting cabins/homes to rest our weary heads. We booked this home when planning our trip to Lassen Volcanic National Park, and was just hoping to find it to be a comfortable place to come back to after a day of hiking. WOW....this home exceeded our expectations in all possible ways. The home was beautiful and fully equipped with anything you could need to spend time away from home. The beds and furniture were so very comfortable, the outdoor areas were so relaxing (fire pit, bistro table under a gazebo, picnic table, outdoor cushioned furniture, another deck down by the creek with chairs to enjoy nature, a deck off the master bedroom....), a bottle of local wine and fixings for s'mores left for us to enjoy, fluffy towels, a keurig with everything you need for your morning coffee, an enclosed sitting room where the children enjoyed doing one of the puzzles they found....the list could go on and on. Kathy and her family have such attention to detail when opening up their home to others. We all said that we wished we had more time there as we would have loved to take advantage of the peacefulness and comfort more than we had the time for.
In dealing with Kathy and her sister, Janis, prior to our arrival they were both so kind and helpful. Truly the type of people you feel you have known for a long time despite only corresponding via email.
Kathy and family, thank you!!! As parents, we strive to provide our children with happy memories and wonderful experiences when possible. Staying in your cabin, where it was quite apparent that your family had made wonderful memories, we were able to do this. We will certainly be back if we ever plan to get away for some relaxation.
To others looking....this is an absolute gem!!!

Owner's Response: Melanie, thank you so much for your glowing review! I appreciate you being so specific in regard to the amenities that Battle Creek Retreat offers. Guests such as you make it all so worthwhile. I'll be sure to share your review with my sister Janis. It has been fun sharing e-mails with you. Thanks again, Melanie! That was incredibly nice of you! PERFECT!

  • 5 of 5
Our first family vacation without other friends or family was made absolutely perfect by staying in this beautiful, secluded and super comfortable cabin. It is located near a main highway that takes you up or down the mountains and within one hour of fun either way. The owners are very accommodating and left s'mores fixings, a ready made fire pit, a great bottle of local wine and fresh flowers in our room. It quickly felt like home and we didn't want to leave! It was mid-June and we went from a snowball fight on Mt. Lassen to 98 degree weather in Redding within four days! Lake Shasta, Lake Burney, Shasta Caverns, the lava tubes, mud pots, Redding Exploratory Park and the array of wildlife were amazing! Bringing our 100lb dog Rocky with us on all our adventures made it all that more special. Our kids Kyra (15), Talia (13) and Slade (11) all said... "Now THIS is living!" Thanks to WiFi in the cabin they were happy! The many games and puzzles in the game room were fun too! Thank you for letting us stay in your fabulous home!

Owner's Response: Tyla, thank you for your glowing review! You were great guests, leaving everything in its place and leaving it clean.
When I read everything you did, I couldn't believe you accomplished it in such a short period of time. I'm so glad you were able to see so much of the north state! Come back anytime! Kathy
