|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
The Cottage at Ohia Grove is a quirky, cozy cabin nestled in the corner of our private four-acre park-like grounds. If your idea of an ideal vacation is time spent reading an engrossing novel...enjoying lazy afternoons naps…taking trips to view interesting natural wonders … exploring steam vents and tidal pools… poking around a farmers’ market…sampling the cuisine at nearby restaurants... or just playing a rousing game of Scrabble, then we invite you to consider a stay at the Cottage at Ohia Grove.
If you’re looking for four-star amenities and appointments, this is not the place for you; you won’t be happy, and neither will we. But if you’re searching for a vacation rental offering comfortable sleeping and lounging space (including our new screened lanai overlooking the gardens), a convenient location near historic Hilo town, and a price tag that won’t keep you up at night, we just might be what you’re looking for! The Cottage is perfect for week-long vacations, island hopping, house-hunting or property development visits, writer's retreats or for anyone who just wants to get away to the tropics.
The Ohia Grove property is four private acres of lush, native Hawaiian fruits, vegetation and, of course, ohia trees (pronounced 'oh-hee'-a,' ). During your stay, we invite you to pick fresh avocados, starfruit, citrus and mangos from our trees, and to enjoy looking at the many wild and cultivated flowers that grow on the grounds.
Don and Rich were frequent visitors to the Big Island for years before we decided to reduce our traveling expenses and just stay here for good! Rich retired after 26 years at Verizon in Washington DC, where he last served as Executive Director of Federal Regulatory Affairs. He can now usually be found puttering around the house or working on his tan at a local beach. Don is an Information Technologies and Networking specialist who has worked for a variety of organizations, including non-profits, a trade union, a major computer graphics company and several consulting firms. In his non-working hours in Hawaii, he likes to garden at Ohia Grove and at our permanent residence around the corner. All of our jobs on the mainland involved extensive travel, so when we set up our vacation rental, we based it on our experiences. We've worked to set up a Cottage that is comfortable, convenient, cozy -- and moderately priced. We hope you'll enjoy your stay and come to love the Big Island as much as we do. Aloha!
The Owner purchased this cottage in 2007
We loved the tropical setting of the four-acre Ohia Grove property, with its many native fruits, flowers and palms. Although it's convenient to Hilo and other area tourist sites, when you're on the property, you feel like you're in your own private tropical garden (and you really are!)
One of property's biggest assets is the sense of privacy - rather than being sandwiched in with other tourists in a busy hotel or B&B, you'll have the Cottage and its four-acre property all to yourselves.
Thank you so much for all the hospitality. (We appreciated) the beautiful yard, fresh fruit and cozy cottage.
There's not much I can say that hasn't already been said, but this place is better than I could have possibly imagined. I came to get away from the city and Ohia Grove was the perfect escape. I loved being lulled to sleep by the sounds of nature and woken up by roosters crowing. It was absolutely incredible! I could have spent a whole day just roaming around the property and soaking in the beauty (if only I'd had more time!!). The owners also gave me some great tips on things to do in the area and were available if I needed them, but totally respected my privacy otherwise. It was perfect. Thanks Rich and Don for sharing this little piece of paradise :)
This cottage looked good on VRBO but was GREAT. The grounds are beautiful and perfectly maintained. Inside, the cottage is roomy, clean and well furnished. We enjoyed all of the windows and views to the outside tropical grove. The lanai was well furnished, too, and great for meals and coffee. We really appreciated the gift basket filled with fruit and coffee. Pleasant surprises also included a full washer and dryer, lots of guidebooks, DVDs, and a well stocked kitchen. The owners responded quickly to all of our inquiries including directions from the Kona airport.
Finally, what we really appreciated about this property was the privacy. The cottage is on acreage as noted in the owner description.
The road to the cottage is a little rough, but there is a real gem at the end of it. Rich and Don provided everything that we would need - from the personalized welcome letter and fruit basket, to ample maps and guidebooks, to suggestions for activities and dining recommendations. The cottage and the grounds were better then the pictures promised. The cottage is cute and cozy. The landscaping is superb. Some of the trees were fruiting, so we were able to enjoy fresh-picked avocados and starfruit. The outdoor shower is great for rinsing off after hiking in Volcano National Park, snorkeling at the tide pools, or relaxing at the geothermal hot spring. We even saw the resident macaw!
Totally amazing. Stayed there in May 2013 and had a blast!
Everything needed was there, from maps to corkscrews to hot water for outside shower. Cottage very comfortable, quiet and trouble free. Perfect as in the pics. Kindness and helpfulness of the owners was superb.
We live in the country & felt right at home upon arrival at the Ohia Grove cottage. Although we did not meet Rich and Don during our stay they were very present in our pre & post trip planning. Always ready with helpful insights of the area as well as the island as a whole. A car rental is a must for this part of the island - do not let the road access to the property negatively influence your opinion on the cottage, bumpy drive but worth it :) The bio and pictures represent the cottage very well - we really enjoyed dining in the lanai. Very clean, full kitchen, washer & dryer (so handy), full bathroom with option to shower outside and plenty of house hold supplies make your stay that much easier. Being so close to the Volcano National Park was a major highlight for us adventure seekers. The park access is $10 per vehicle for 7 days which allowed us to come and go as we wanted during the week we stayed at the cottage. With this side of the island comes rain hence the beautiful rain forests. We took a drive to Pahoa on a rainy day and decided to discover hwy 137 - Beautiful scenic drive and we didn't let a little rain stop us from snorkeling in the Kapoho tide pools A MUST. Where we swam with our 1st turtle (huge) on the island. If you have a chance go the Hilo Market on Wednesdays - worth it :) All in all - great place & highly recommend. Would we return if life was sweet enough to allow us that chance? Hell yeah!
