COZY COTTAGE IN A TROPICAL GARDEN GROVE

Keaau Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

The Cottage at Ohia Grove is a quirky, cozy cabin nestled in the corner of our private four-acre park-like grounds. If your idea of an ideal vacation is time spent reading an engrossing novel...enjoying lazy afternoons naps…taking trips to view interesting natural wonders … exploring steam vents and tidal pools… poking around a farmers’ market…sampling the cuisine at nearby restaurants... or just playing a rousing game of Scrabble, then we invite you to consider a stay at the Cottage at Ohia Grove.

If you’re looking for four-star amenities and appointments, this is not the place for you; you won’t be happy, and neither will we. But if you’re searching for a vacation rental offering comfortable sleeping and lounging space (including our new screened lanai overlooking the gardens), a convenient location near historic Hilo town, and a price tag that won’t keep you up at night, we just might be what you’re looking for! The Cottage is perfect for week-long vacations, island hopping, house-hunting or property development visits, writer's retreats or for anyone who just wants to get away to the tropics.

The Ohia Grove property is four private acres of lush, native Hawaiian fruits, vegetation and, of course, ohia trees (pronounced 'oh-hee'-a,' ). During your stay, we invite you to pick fresh avocados, starfruit, citrus and mangos from our trees, and to enjoy looking at the many wild and cultivated flowers that grow on the grounds.

Don and Rich were frequent visitors to the Big Island for years before we decided to reduce our traveling expenses and just stay here for good! Rich retired after 26 years at Verizon in Washington DC, where he last served as Executive Director of Federal Regulatory Affairs. He can now usually be found puttering around the house or working on his tan at a local beach. Don is an Information Technologies and Networking specialist who has worked for a variety of organizations, including non-profits, a trade union, a major computer graphics company and several consulting firms. In his non-working hours in Hawaii, he likes to garden at Ohia Grove and at our permanent residence around the corner. All of our jobs on the mainland involved extensive travel, so when we set up our vacation rental, we based it on our experiences. We've worked to set up a Cottage that is comfortable, convenient, cozy -- and moderately priced. We hope you'll enjoy your stay and come to love the Big Island as much as we do. Aloha!

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2007

We loved the tropical setting of the four-acre Ohia Grove property, with its many native fruits, flowers and palms. Although it's convenient to Hilo and other area tourist sites, when you're on the property, you feel like you're in your own private tropical garden (and you really are!)

One of property's biggest assets is the sense of privacy - rather than being sandwiched in with other tourists in a busy hotel or B&B, you'll have the Cottage and its four-acre property all to yourselves.

OWNERS GO ABOVE AND BEYOND

We had a wonderful stay at the cottage in Ohia Grove. It was roomy, clean, and nicely furnished. We particularly liked the large, screened lanai surrounded by green plants and flowers and the sounds of birds. It was plenty big enough for our family of four. Rich & Don made everything perfect for our arrival - fresh fruit and flowers and soft hawaiian music playing from the boom box. After we left, they found a few things we had left behind - some socks and a bullet-shaped laser pointer that my son had purchased at Pearl Harbor as a souvenir. Without even being asked, they mailed them to our home.

NEED TO DETACH FROM REALITY? LOOK NO FURTHER; YOU'VE STRUCK GOLD!

Need to detach from reality? Look no further; you've struck gold!

The Ohia Cottage epitomizes peace and seclusion and is meticulously cared for by attentive owners, Rich & Don. I've rented many vrbo properties and this one takes the cake in terms of property management. Rich was easily available for any communication and provided hospitality exemplifying the true spirit of Aloha. We were greeted by fresh floral arrangements, Hawaiian music, a welcome basket featuring fruit and coffee, as well as a personalized letter suggesting local activities for our time in Keau'u. The rental was spotlessly clean, offered all the beach essentials to make life easy, and a plethora of literature featuring the Big Island. Felt safe and secure on the expansive 4+ acre property. Security cameras and a locking entrance gate added comfort. Do yourself a favor and walk the grounds in the morning with a fresh cup of coffee and a camera. You'll experience secluded paradise at its finest, and it's all yours to enjoy.

The location is ideal for a trip to Hilo (20 or so minutes), a drive on the spectacular Puna coast (25 minutes) and the must visit Volcano National Park (40 minutes). The convenient local afforded us the opportunity to view K?lauea
spectacularly glowing against the night sky littered with an abundance of stars.

Coqui frogs, tropical birds and other assorted wildlife will lull you to sleep in the evenings at this private retreat. If jungle sounds aren't for you, ear plugs are provided. I found no need and embraced nature. The large, screened lanai was our favorite place to decompress and truly enjoy our surroundings. We kept the Hawaiian CD on repeat to maximize our experience. I love the fact that I was able to ask the question, "What day is it today?". Work was a distant memory. That feeling isn't easily achieved but the Ohia cottage sent me there.

Mahalo nui loa to Rich & Don for sharing their slice of heaven with the rental community. We will be back!

COMFY & COZY HOME AWAY FROM HOME IN RURAL TROPICAL PARADISE!

Comfy & Cozy Home Away From Home in Rural Tropical Paradise!
  • 5 of 5
We truly are enjoyed our time here in the cottage. We arrived late in the evening to some soft music and the ever present Coqui frogs. Rich and Don had left lights on for us so we didn't have difficulty finding our way around in our new home away from home. It's a very rural location where you truly have the opportunity to feel and see and smell and hear and taste country Hawaii. The cottage has all of the things that you would expect in your own home and many more to make your stay very pleasant and easy. We were even surprised with an occasional visit from a scarlet macaw that someone released or that had escaped. If you hear squawking or an out of place hello, hi, cracker, or help then you know the macaw is nearby. In summary, it's a lovely location to slow down and relax in paradise.

PERFECT SECLUSION

  • 5 of 5
I was hesitant to give a review as I would love to keep this place a secret - but Don and Rich have created such an incredible place to relax and unwind that they deserve every bit of success that they will surely enjoy from this beautiful property.

My wife and I made a long weekend out of a 2 day business trip to Puna and I was extremely fortunate to find this place at the last minute. What a place it is too, the perfect place to just relax but also centrally located to explore the Puna district for those wishing to venture out. Reasonably close by are the Kapoho Tidepols, Volcanoes Nat'l Park, Kalapana Lava flows, Hilo town, Panaewa Zoo, and many other great places to enjoy the local culture.

Plenty of amenities, TV/SAT, DVD player, screened deck, fruit bearing trees, long winding path through the 4 acres of lush vegetation. I have stayed at many places on the Big Island of Hawaii as we travel there several times a year, and this is by far at the top of my list based on hospitality, location, and price. While I recommend this place for couples, there is plenty of room for extra guests. You will not be disappointed. Can't wait to get back!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your nice comments, and I'm glad we were able to accommodate your last-minute visit! I did want to just temper your point about extra guests a bit, though. The Cottage can sleep four if the living room's queen-size futon is opened, but that does lead to more of a slumber party-type environment. A lot of folks are fine with that (we were when the Cottage was our vacation getaway before our big move...), but guests who prefer a bit more privacy and space might want to consider a larger property. Mahalo!

BEAUTIFUL COTTAGE WITH BEAUTIFUL HUGE GARDEN AND VERY HELPFUL OWNERS!

  • 5 of 5
This cottage is absolutely beautiful and cozy and this property has a lot of land with beautiful flowers, star fruit and avocado trees. The lot is big enough that you wouldn’t see or hear your neighbors. It does look like a piece of paradise. We definitely enjoyed staying here a lot.
When we arrived, there were vases with beautiful flowers in every room, even in the bathroom. The owner left us a basket of fresh fruit and local coffee bag. The house also had everything you need to enjoy your vacation including the beach chairs and coolers for the beach. The owner contacted me few time to ensure that everything is ok and we are enjoying the house.
Bottom line, rent this place, you’ll love it!
