Overview

Keaau Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

The Cottage at Ohia Grove is a quirky, cozy cabin nestled in the corner of our private four-acre park-like grounds. If your idea of an ideal vacation is time spent reading an engrossing novel...enjoying lazy afternoons naps…taking trips to view interesting natural wonders … exploring steam vents and tidal pools… poking around a farmers’ market…sampling the cuisine at nearby restaurants... or just playing a rousing game of Scrabble, then we invite you to consider a stay at the Cottage at Ohia Grove.

If you’re looking for four-star amenities and appointments, this is not the place for you; you won’t be happy, and neither will we. But if you’re searching for a vacation rental offering comfortable sleeping and lounging space (including our new screened lanai overlooking the gardens), a convenient location near historic Hilo town, and a price tag that won’t keep you up at night, we just might be what you’re looking for! The Cottage is perfect for week-long vacations, island hopping, house-hunting or property development visits, writer's retreats or for anyone who just wants to get away to the tropics.

The Ohia Grove property is four private acres of lush, native Hawaiian fruits, vegetation and, of course, ohia trees (pronounced 'oh-hee'-a,' ). During your stay, we invite you to pick fresh avocados, starfruit, citrus and mangos from our trees, and to enjoy looking at the many wild and cultivated flowers that grow on the grounds.

About The Owner

Don and Rich were frequent visitors to the Big Island for years before we decided to reduce our traveling expenses and just stay here for good! Rich retired after 26 years at Verizon in Washington DC, where he last served as Executive Director of Federal Regulatory Affairs. He can now usually be found puttering around the house or working on his tan at a local beach. Don is an Information Technologies and Networking specialist who has worked for a variety of organizations, including non-profits, a trade union, a major computer graphics company and several consulting firms. In his non-working hours in Hawaii, he likes to garden at Ohia Grove and at our permanent residence around the corner. All of our jobs on the mainland involved extensive travel, so when we set up our vacation rental, we based it on our experiences. We've worked to set up a Cottage that is comfortable, convenient, cozy -- and moderately priced. We hope you'll enjoy your stay and come to love the Big Island as much as we do. Aloha!

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2007

Why The Owner chose Keaau

We loved the tropical setting of the four-acre Ohia Grove property, with its many native fruits, flowers and palms. Although it's convenient to Hilo and other area tourist sites, when you're on the property, you feel like you're in your own private tropical garden (and you really are!)

What makes this cottage unique

One of property's biggest assets is the sense of privacy - rather than being sandwiched in with other tourists in a busy hotel or B&B, you'll have the Cottage and its four-acre property all to yourselves.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for all the hospitality. (We appreciated) the beautiful yard, fresh fruit and cozy cottage.

Great place, Amazing people !

  • 5 of 5
Our stay at Tropical Garden Grove was all we expected and more. The cottage is very cozy and comfortable. We found the location to be very convenient for all the activities and sight-seeing if you have a car; Volcano, waterfall, snorkeling... Our last day coincided with Hurricane Iselle. The owners where exceptional in helping us get through it. They went the extra mile by giving us many options and helping us re-plan the end of our vacation. Thanks again, it was a very stressful day and with your support we felt more helped then any hotel we could’ve stayed in, not to mention that you had to deal with the storm as well !

We recommend this location both for the kindness of the owners and the great escape you will find in its magnificent garden.

Amazing private hideaway near Hilo and Volcano

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I realized we stumbled upon a little piece of paradise when we pulled up to the Ohia Grover property. We were a little apprehensive at first when we drove up the bumpy back road to get here, but once we drove through the gates that all changed. This property is situated on 4 beautiful acres of lush flowers and trees which we loved strolling through in the morning with our coffee or fresh fruit smoothies.

The inside of the property is beautifully furnished and the kitchen contains everything you will need to cook delicious meals from home, including a bbq for grilling burgers or fresh fish. There are a couple excellent weekend farmers markets in Hilo for all the necessary ingredients!

The creme de la creme at the Ohia Grove property was the fully screened in Lanai in which we spent the majority of our time on while we were here, playing cards, eating meals, and listening to the couqi frogs.

The owners of this quant forest home really pull out all the stops to make sure your stay here is an extremely enjoyable and memorable experience and we will absolutely remember it as one of the highlights of our Big Island Vacation.

Can't wait to come back in the future!

Incredible

  • 5 of 5
We were in Hawaii (Big Isle & Maui) for about 2.5 weeks and stayed in a number of places. Ohia Grove was by a crazy far amount the best place during our trip.

There are a few cons that I'll get out of the way first for those that it matters to. The cottage is in a newly developing residential acreage area. So, it's not really in walking distance to anything. The road isn't lit and can be a bit bumpy and rutted as it's packed dirt and lava rock (still fine for rental cars, just go slow). It is a rain forest area after all, so mosquitoes can be a nuisance if not prepared.
--
Ok, with the bad dealt with, this place is beyond awesome! Rich and Don provide a stellar abode. They had the place waiting for our arrival with music playing, a fresh fruit basket on the dining table and a beautiful flower arrangement in the living area.

First off, the cottage is super clean and very well maintained. That should give a hint about how these guys treat their property and guests. Now, if you're worried about living space, the cottage is incredibly roomy. It's essentially a large one bedroom apartment with a comfy sleeper sofa in the living room. The wife, myself and two tween boys had no space problems living out of our luggage without having to move furniture around or ever closing the sleeper. There is plenty of storage available for those who like to unpack bags though. The kitchen is the best equipped VRBO property we've ever seen. Also, the washer and dryer are full sized and work great. The lanai (patio, porch) can't be beat. It's about 20ft by 15ft, covered and totally screened in. No skeeters or rain will bother you while enjoying that evening wind down beverage out there. As other reviews mentioned, you need to take a few walk abouts to enjoys the grounds. I enjoyed a number of walks each morning with my coffee while waiting for our kids to wake.
--
Now the location of the property might be a tad off the beaten path but it's wonderful none the less. Hilo is about 15 minutes north and the volcano national park is a mere 20 minutes west. It's an awesome base for doing the east side of the island. We were only here for 5 or 6 nights, but I wish it had been more.

Owner's Response: Glad you and your clan had a good time! Just to eliminate confusion for anyone who might skim your review, our vacation rental may be the size of a one-bedroom apartment, but it is a free standing cottage on four acres that you have all to yourselves. Rich and Don don't live on the vacation rental site, but we're literally just around the corner in case you need anything.

We had a wonderful stay at the cottage in Ohia Grove. It was roomy, clean, and nicely furnished. We particularly liked the large, screened lanai surrounded by green plants and flowers and the sounds of birds. It was plenty big enough for our family of four. Rich & Don made everything perfect for our arrival - fresh fruit and flowers and soft hawaiian music playing from the boom box. After we left, they found a few things we had left behind - some socks and a bullet-shaped laser pointer that my son had purchased at Pearl Harbor as a souvenir. Without even being asked, they mailed them to our home.

The Ohia Cottage epitomizes peace and seclusion and is meticulously cared for by attentive owners, Rich & Don. I've rented many vrbo properties and this one takes the cake in terms of property management. Rich was easily available for any communication and provided hospitality exemplifying the true spirit of Aloha. We were greeted by fresh floral arrangements, Hawaiian music, a welcome basket featuring fruit and coffee, as well as a personalized letter suggesting local activities for our time in Keau'u. The rental was spotlessly clean, offered all the beach essentials to make life easy, and a plethora of literature featuring the Big Island. Felt safe and secure on the expansive 4+ acre property. Security cameras and a locking entrance gate added comfort. Do yourself a favor and walk the grounds in the morning with a fresh cup of coffee and a camera. You'll experience secluded paradise at its finest, and it's all yours to enjoy.

The location is ideal for a trip to Hilo (20 or so minutes), a drive on the spectacular Puna coast (25 minutes) and the must visit Volcano National Park (40 minutes). The convenient local afforded us the opportunity to view K?lauea
spectacularly glowing against the night sky littered with an abundance of stars.

Coqui frogs, tropical birds and other assorted wildlife will lull you to sleep in the evenings at this private retreat. If jungle sounds aren't for you, ear plugs are provided. I found no need and embraced nature. The large, screened lanai was our favorite place to decompress and truly enjoy our surroundings. We kept the Hawaiian CD on repeat to maximize our experience. I love the fact that I was able to ask the question, "What day is it today?". Work was a distant memory. That feeling isn't easily achieved but the Ohia cottage sent me there.

Mahalo nui loa to Rich & Don for sharing their slice of heaven with the rental community. We will be back!

Comfy & Cozy Home Away From Home in Rural Tropical Paradise!

Comfy & Cozy Home Away From Home in Rural Tropical Paradise!

We truly are enjoyed our time here in the cottage. We arrived late in the evening to some soft music and the ever present Coqui frogs. Rich and Don had left lights on for us so we didn't have difficulty finding our way around in our new home away from home. It's a very rural location where you truly have the opportunity to feel and see and smell and hear and taste country Hawaii. The cottage has all of the things that you would expect in your own home and many more to make your stay very pleasant and easy. We were even surprised with an occasional visit from a scarlet macaw that someone released or that had escaped. If you hear squawking or an out of place hello, hi, cracker, or help then you know the macaw is nearby. In summary, it's a lovely location to slow down and relax in paradise.
