Screened Patio: Condo 42 is the only Los Almendros rental unit with a screened rear patio. In the evening, guests can relax and listen to the ocean surf without being bothered by insects attracted by the patio's overhead lights. The ability to use the patio, day or night, significantly increases the condo's living space. Families with children appreciate having a second television on the patio.
Outstanding Swimming and Snorkeling: Playa Ocotal is one of Guanacaste's quietest and cleanest 'Blue Flag' beaches. The ocean surf is very gentle. Playa Ocotal has no dangerous riptides. Travel guides recommend Playa Ocotal to outdoor enthusiasts who want to snorkel from a Guanacaste beach. Guanacaste snorkelers drive many miles to explore the rock formations at both ends of Playa Ocotal Beach. Playa Ocotal's best snorkeling is directly below Los Almendros. On most days, snorkelers see numerous species of colorful, tropical fish in Playa Ocotal's clear waters.
Club membership: We are members of The Club at Coco Bay. Guests staying in our condominium enjoy full membership privileges at this outstanding private facility. The Club at Coco Bay offers lighted tennis courts, a gym with modern exercise equipment, two swimming pools, yoga/Zumba classes and one of the area's best restaurants.
Father Rooster's Restaurant: One of Ocotal's most popular restaurants is located less than 200 meters from the entrance to Los Almendros. Father Rooster's is a beachfront restaurant that serves tasty appetizers, full meals and delicious tropical drinks. Fresh seafood is the restaurant's specialty. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. Father Rooster's is a great place to enjoy a beautiful Guanacaste sunset.
Playas del Coco: Coco is Guanacaste's fastest growing beach community. The town is a 5 minute drive from Los Almendros. Coco has modern grocery stores, pharmacies, banks, ATM machines, restaurants, ice cream shops, disco/bars, souvenir shops, a casino and an emergency medical facility.
Garmin GPS: We provide our guests the same EZFind GPS software that local rental car agencies charge $7-10 per day. We have added numerous restaurants and activities to EZFind's standard package. Our GPS unit includes all of Coco's best restaurants and Guanacaste's most popular tourist attractions. Select 'Home' and our GPS unit will provide you the safest, quickest route back to Los Almendros.
Pre-Paid Cell Phone: Cell phones from the USA and Canada require a different chip to work in Costa Rica. If the required chip is purchased, roaming charges can be very high. To resolve communication concerns, we provide our guests a pre-paid cell phone that can be used to call anywhere in Costa Rica. A few important phone numbers have been programmed for emergency use. These include the Los Almendros office, our General Manager's cell phone and the cell phone number of an English speaking doctor who works out of the emergency medical clinic in Playas del Coco.
Most guests use their iPads and Skype to make inexpensive calls to the USA or Canada.
Rocket Frog Diving: The Rocket Frog dive shop is located next door to Los Almendros' business office. Rocket Frog has Guanacaste's fastest dive boat and newest scuba equipment. Training is conducted in Los Almendros' main pool. Guests staying at Los Almendros are entitled to a 10% discount on all dive services.
Los Almendros' fully equipped condominiums are classified as a 'specialty lodging'. Los Almendros is one of Northern Guanacaste's top rated beachfront properties. We are Playa Ocotal's #1 rated 'specialty lodging'.
Vacation Planning Assistance: Playa Ocotal is an excellent location from which to initiate day trips. Los Almendros has an experienced, bilingual office staff that assists guests in making reservations for deep sea fishing, diving, snorkeling, sailing, rafting, tubing, zip lining, massages, hiking, bird watching, hot springs, rain forest tours, volcanoes, canopy tours and horseback riding. The on-site General Manager has been with Los Almendros for over ten years. He is bilingual, a Guanacaste native, and knows all the local tour operators. One of his greatest strengths is his ability to help guests plan and coordinate their vacation activities.
Transportation: A car is nice to have, but is not a necessity in Costa Rica. Taxi’s from Los Almendros to Coco cost $7-8 each way. Several tour operators will pick-up and drop off at Los Almendros. Taxi service is available to and from the Liberia airport ($55 car, $70 van). The Los Almendros office can arrange to have you picked up at the Liberia Airport, and have a rental vehicle delivered to your condo.

Why Gail Brewer chose Playa Ocotal
Los Almendros de Ocotal enjoys a 'Prime' beachfront location. Most equivalent properties in Guanacaste are owned by large hotels. Los Almendros de Ocotal is preferred by travelers who prefer to stay at a small, less commercial resort. Los Almendros does not require its guests to purchase an 'all inclusive' meal plan. Our guests enjoy dining at local independent restaurants, and preparing an occasional home cooked meal. They do not worry about missing scheduled meals...they can dine wherever their travels take them. Playa Ocotal is a very quiet and peaceful beach. The rock formations directly below Los Almendros is one of Guanacaste's most popular locations for snorkeling from shore. Snorkelers routinely see schools of beautiful angel fish, game fish, rays, eels and octopi. We provide our guests good quality snorkeling gear, free of charge.
What makes this condo unique
Relying on feedback from our guests, we continuously add new items for our patrons to enjoy. For example: 1) Playas del Coco has over 30 restaurants. Several of the best restaurants are not easy to find. We provide our guests a free GPS unit. The GPS device is pre-programmed with the location of Coco's best restaurants and Guanacaste's most popular tourist attractions. Our GPS unit recognizes Los Almendros as 'Home'. No matter where you travel in Costa Rica, your GPS unit will provide you the quickest, safest return route to Los Almendros. 2) US and Canadian cell phones require a special chip to function in Costa Rica. When they do work, roaming charges are expensive. We provide our North American guests a cell phone that can be used to make free calls anywhere in Costa Rica. The phone numbers of the Los Almendros office, our General Manager's cell phone, and the number of an English speaking doctor in Coco are pre-programmed. 3) Playa Ocotal offers Guanacaste's best snorkeling. The rock formations directly below Los Almendros is the most popular off-shore snorkeling location in Northern Guanacaste. 4) A popular, reasonably priced, beachfront restaurant is located less than 100 meters from the entrance to Los Almendros. 'Father Rooster's' specializes in seafood and delicious tropical drinks. The 'vegetarian nachos' are a favorite appetizer. 5) Los Almendros has a top rated dive shop on site...Rocket Frog Divers. Guests our entitled to a 10% discount off Rocket Frog's published rates. 6) In addition to world class deep sea fishing, many families enjoy fishing near shore for red snapper. They grill their fresh catch on the private charcoal BBQ in front of our condo. 7) Our guests enjoy membership privileges at Coco Bay Beach Club. This club offers spa treatments, tennis courts, swimming pools with children slide, exercise machines, yoga classes and Zumba classes.
Guestbook comments from the owner
Our family of four just returned from beautiful Costa Rica. We decided to stay at Los Almendros because of all of the great reviews we had read on Trip Advisor, and we were not disappointed. We stayed in Condo #42 which was a very nice 2 bedroom unit which also supplied snorkel equipment for their guests. The view of the beach was beautiful. We spent lots of time exploring the black sand beach which also had all sorts of rock formations that the kids had a blast climbing. The tide changes made the exploration different each and every time. The snorkeling was right off of the beach and was really great with lots of beautiful fish and the kids were excited to even see a couple of stingrays. There is a nice restaurant directly on the beach called Father Rooster which had great food and was so convenient on the nights we didn't feel like heading to Coco, the touristy neighboring town. The condo complex had several swimming pools which were all very nice, and we always stopped at the pools for a short swim after going to the beach. Stephanie, who runs the desk at Los Almendros was always very friendly and helpful. Our family doesn't like crowds and Playa Ocotal was never crowded and a perfect location for our family. Having the snorkeling opportunity right there was even better. We spent lots of time at the beach and also booked a snorkel tour with Pelican tours which are located right on the beach in Ocotal. We saw a pod of dolphin and then stopped at a beach where he knew howler monkeys hung out and sure enough, there they were eating mangos out of the trees. We came across a giant (and I mean giant) school of black fin tuna. When Brian, our guide, saw them he got out his rod and reel and almost immediately hooked one and allowed my 15 year old son to reel it in which was quite a work out and very exciting. Needless to say, we got a deep sea fishing adventure that my son will never forget! And yes, we also stopped at 3 snorkeling sites which were also very nice. We also made a stop at a "cave" which we thought we were going to snorkel in but it was really a place where the water had created a huge hole in the cliff and water rushed in and out. Our guide walked us to the top of that hill for a gorgeous overlook so that made up for the disappointment of not snorkeling in the "cave." I would definitely recommend Los Almendros and Playa Ocotal for any family looking for a great vacation. (Originally posted by Kirsten on TripAdvisor).
