An expensive mistake
We are seasoned travellers, who have stayed in many holiday rental properties in many countries.
Our immediate reaction on arrival at Les Petit Ouldes, was that we wanted to leave, the place lacked, comfort, quality & convenience, however, we decided to give it a try. On our way to Francueil we had stayed in a couple of budget hotels, which were far more comfortable.
Throughout the Gite we could not find a bit of comfort ,& nowhere to sit comfortably, we even went out & bought 2 plastic chairs . The lounge area was depressing & very shabby & we could not use it.
The kitchen was a makeshift & facilities were very poor, nowhere to prepare a meal, nowhere to keep food . In fact trying to make a meal was just hard work. We would have been more comfortable in our own garage. We had a constant concern of rodents, so we had to go out & buy some large plastic boxes to protect our food.
The bathroom was fraught with problems, the shower was over the bath & the sides were far too high with nothing to hold onto to stop you from falling.
The sun terrace was another joke, a shabby uninviting area sheltered from the sun.
We were expected to put our clothes in a dingy, dark & dirty wardrobe which wasn't even in the bedroom.
The joke of a tiny, elderly washing machine was more suited to a dolls house, located in a building resembling a disused garbage disposal site, it was appalling.
The pool was a big attraction for us, however it remained covered throughout our stay, with only a begrudged offer of " do you think you might use the pool"
While we were there we did not even get to see the water.
Although we had paid in full for a 2 week stay we left after 3 nights, as the holiday was ruined & we would rather go home, which is what we did. We have been offered no refund by way of compensation.
The owner of the house had been helpful in making a doctors appointment for us & wrote a letter to explain the problem, which helped immensely & we were very grateful to her for that.
We had booked this holiday on the strength of the 5* reviews & we just cannot understand how anyone could rate this as 5*. This is a matter of standards & this accommodation failed miserably to meet any of ours .
Owner's Response: I have run my gîte for over a decade and have only had rave reviews, with enthusiastic guests often becoming friends returning summer after summer (nearly 40% returnees this year). I was particularly shocked and saddened by what appears to be a deliberately mischievous review written by people who seem intent on finding fault. I operate my gîte in a spirit of openness and dialogue: I welcome all suggestions/requests. This couple left abruptly for England in my absence, preferring not to discuss their concern - there had been full opportunity for this. With hindsight, it seems unlikely they studied the photos on VRBO and my website showing all the rooms clearly. Nor did they feel able to discuss any potential requirements as to the suitability of my apartment for them (separate shower, extra chairs/cushions for back problems). Shame, I could have offered the use of a wet room in the house. The gîte kitchen pretends no luxury (no dishwasher) but is well equipped; guests are welcome to move things around to suit. The bath is of standard dimensions (I noted the lack of grab rail - remedied this week). The wardrobe is on the entrance wall to the bedroom (see photos) – totally accessible. The little washing machine in the stable functions well; my own is available for larger loads (stated in my booklet). Because of fierce sun the day these guests arrived, salon window and door shutters were shut. To my knowledge these were never opened during their stay; judging the terrace and salon so harshly seems odd. I would add that the majority of guests find my apartment exceptionally clean compared with most and that the addition of fresh flowers and a meal awaiting is a precious adjunct to their stay The wife arrived with an acute infection needing medical attention (I made the doctor’s appointment forthwith); swimming was obviously inadvisable. During the rest of their stay no interest in swimming/opening the pool was ever voiced. My booklet explains that the law requires the cover to be in place when not in use and a demonstration is indispensable. The suggestion that food needs to be protected from rodents is laughable. I pride myself on keeping everything spotless. I love my house and garden and enjoy sharing it with guests – they can eat vegetables from the garden and drink wine from the vineyard; my reward is seeing them find space to breathe and relax. I look forward to welcoming many more of you in the years to come.
