The house was built in 1894. It has been a wonderful experience to open the doors to summer rental guests. They echo the laughter of the past and keeps the joy fresh.

Family get together.

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Thomas Richard House. Johanna could not have been more gracious. She kept in touch with us prior to our arrival, asking if there was any information on local activities that she could send to us. We arrived in the early hours of the morning and she was still able to accommodate our arrival time. Our grandson had a wonderful time playing "hide and seek", the house is full of interesting nooks. The sleeping arrangements were wonderful. The 5 year old had his own room with 2 twin beds and loved having a choice of which to sleep in each night. The books in the living room were so interesting. My family loved learning about the local families from some of the high school year books of the 1920's. We could walk to the stores, restaurants and Harbor within a block or less. The vegetarians in our family loved the local store with its fresh produce and vegetarian friendly products. The house itself has such an interesting layout. We were all able to spread out and not get in each others way or come together and enjoy each others company in rooms large enough to accommodate all of us. The rooms were all clean and inviting. My son-in-law had to put in some hours working and we appreciated having the Internet available so that he could come with us. We did nature walks, climbed a small mountain and traveled the Island. I have always loved Bar Harbor and we would absolutely stay here again. We had a great time. Thank you Johanna for enhancing our visit.

Wonderful Experience!!

Six long time girlfriends stayed at the Thomas Richard House for a week! What a treat! There was plenty of room for everyone. Although we weren't there much during the day, we all seem to gather round the TV at night for conversation and fun. The house was clean and well maintained. We felt privileged to share in such a historic house. The house is just a block or so from the wonderful little town of Southwest Harbor. Southwest Harbor was the best harbor of all we visited in the area. It is beautiful and this house is right across from the harbor. There are plenty of restaurants, cute little shops, a bakery, and a small town grocery store. Johanna was wonderful! The townspeople were so nice. We loved the Seabiscuit Restaurant next door for breakfast! So, this place has the perfect accommodations, perfect location, and I truly believe it's in the best part of Maine.
Owner's Response: Dr. Glenda, It is visitors like you all that make the Thomas Richard House special. Your good times and laughter have been added to the store of memories that this house holds. The folks you met here appreciated the Southern charm that you bought here to Southwest Harbor this past summer. Hope to see you on your next visit to Acadia. Have a wonderful fall season. Thank you! Johanna

We had a wonderful to stay in South Harbor

This is the second time we have family vacation to Acadia National Park. Both time we stay in South Harbor. Thanks for Joan to let us stay in her Thomas Richard House. This is an old and pretty house. The location is also great. walk distance to downtown South Harbor. The only drawback I will say is there is no wireless and wired internet only. However, good thing is you can get rid of the fancy wireless electronic during your vacation. I will stay again next time. Forget to mention, if the house has dish washing machine, there will be perfect.
Owner's Response: Thank you for the review. Wifi will be available for the 2014 season. It was my pleasure that the Thomas Richard House was your homeaway for your parents visit to America. I enjoyed meeting you all and am glad that you will return in the future. The eat in kitchen as well as the dining room are in keeping with the architecture of the home. It was a conscious decision not to install the usual stainless steel appliances as it would change the lovely character of this house. I will indeed consider how best to accommodate a dishwasher in the future. Thank you. Looking forward to the 2014 season and your return. Joan

Fall get away

A group of my friends and I love the Acadia area. We usually stay in a motel but this was a wonderful choice for our group. The house had everything and more than you could ask for it's central location was such an added treat. We had so much privacy in the house that we could have the time to do our own things and not be in eachothers way. If we had any questions we just picked up the phone and got an answer . The owner was always available to us. It was a wonderful time in such a great home. For us it was a perfect choice.
Owner's Response: Thank you Kathleen! This group's" travel arranger" Judy was enthusiastic in the plans for the group and a blast to work with. I appreciated the opportunity to show that a summer rental had advantages and was thrilled that you all had a great time. You will now be known as "group travel secretary" since emailing me that all the gals thought each other had written a review. And had fun with that realization.. You gals were my September highlight. Come back again!

Family Vacation

Amazingly, house seems bigger than 2700 square feet. There are 4 large bedrooms on the second floor. There were 7 of us and we only used 3 of the bedrooms. Downstairs has large kitchen with dining table; there is a large dining room with another dining table which we never even used. Downstairs also had 3 good size living rooms. We only spent time in 1 of the living rooms. House was so big we only used part of it. House is very clean and owner (Johanna) is very accomodating and perhaps the nicest owner/renter we have dealt with. Bathrooms were well kept with plenty of clean linens. Towels were actually rolled up and we felt, at times, like we were in a hotel. There is a nice deck on the side of the house with ocean views. House is literally steps from "downtown" Southwest Harbor. I highly recommend this house.
Owner's Response: Thanks for the review and the compliment. Your comments echo the special feelings the house provokes. I try my best to keep that going in the small touches. Somehow it is the small things that are remembered. Thank you for leaving the house happier through your visit. It was my pleasure to have your family visit.
