This spectacular 20 acre property is just a few minutes drive and a 15 minute walk away from downtown Atenas. It features a gorgeous home on 20 acres of private land with lush tropical gardens, orchards, streams and breathtaking views. You can pick bananas by the swimming pool, caimito by the front gate, mangoes along the drive and oranges, lemons, water apple, papaya and cashews in the orchard. From the verandas and other magical spots on the property there are superb views, including Poas volcano and the Central Valley. There are plenty of interesting walks in the neighborhood but just walking the property itself is an adventure in a tropical paradise. There is a varied population of wildlife, especially birds which, interestingly, can best be viewed from the pool area!!
The three bedroom main residence features vaulted ceilings, hand crafted hardwood windows, ceilings and doors. Huge wrap around verandas, totally private swimming pool and all modern conveniences. The bathrooms have just been renovated (Jan 2015). Internet, satellite TV provided. The house is located in Mercedes, one of the most desirable areas around Atenas characterized by large properties and friendly local people.
There is a helpful gardener and his wife who live in the gatehouse by the road, a considerable distance from the main house, ensuring immediate assistance and yet total privacy. The local property managers, Piet and Yvonne are always available to organize trips, car rental, give local advice and organize airport pickup if required.
My name is Tonia and I am Belgian. I have been living in the US for 28 years but am a world traveler at heart. I like nature and natural things, which is one of the reasons why I chose Atenas in Costa Rica as a second home. The area is unspoiled and yet there is a pleasant town nearby. Excessive heat and humidity don't agree with me and the climate in Atenas is perfect, warm but not stifling, cool but not cold.
If I could be there all the time I would but alas I have other commitments. So at least others can enjoy the property - and this makes me feel good!
TONIA purchased this house in 2008
Living in the mountains, especially Atenas offers the ultimate climate: warm and comfortable during the day and cool at night. This property was an expression of my dream to live peacefully, surrounded by nature, in a house that has soul. It has privacy, yet is close to town. Unlike many rental properties, this is not just a house and pool. It is a gorgeous private estate with a river, woods, views, fruit trees, wildlife and an extraordinary variety of exotic birds. Considering the price of rentals in other areas of Costa Rica and other parts of the world, this property offers extraordinary value.
Unique in Atenas: spectacular home on a giant piece of landscaped tropical paradise with incredible views. It has complete privacy, varied terrain, tranquility and endless beauty. For bird watchers the property is especially appealing for the amazing variety of tropical birds. You can drive to town in a matter of minutes but we think you would rather walk and enjoy the local atmosphere. The complete privacy does not mean you have to go far for amenities: two local restaurants are within minutes' walk.
What you will most appreciate is the peace, natural beauty, lush gardens, wildlife, fresh air and comfort of a beautiful home.
A Week in Paradise!

From the minute Tonia answered my request for info, I knew that our visit to this beautiful home just outside of Atenas was going to be a great experience. Having never been to Costa Rica, my friends and I wanted to rent a home which would allow us to be centrally located. We wanted to be able to get into town easily, enjoy a pool at the home, take day trips to volcanoes, parks, and beaches around the country, have access to someone who could escort us to the best sites, and to stay in a comfortable home. Colina Paula fit the bill perfectly. Tonia was incredibly helpful arranging for a driver to pick us up at the SanJose Airport, even suggesting to him (and to us via email) that he stop at a 'supermercado' so that we could purchase groceries and spirits before heading to her home. Arriving at Colina Paula, we found the website photos to be entirely accurate but still not able to capture the natural beauty of the tree/tropical plant/pasture-covered property. The house itself is most aptly described as classy and comfortable; the woodworking has been done by a master craftsman. Laid out for optimal views of gorgeous mountains and volcanoes in the distance and cross-breezes to enjoy in the house or on the wrap-around patio, the house is in an ideal location to enjoy cooking dinner on the huge gas grill, sipping coffee on the patio, swimming in the immaculately maintained pool steps from the house, and relaxing. Tonia's care for the house carries over to her care for her guests, having suggested and arranged for us to contact Walter, a tour van owner, to take us on incredible day trips that allowed. While we loved spending our mornings on the patio over breakfast we made in the well stocked kitchen, we were just as eager to wander into town feeling like Atenas natives, enjoy a massage on the beach, or try a challenging zipline. We sadly said goodbye but we will surely return.
We have certainly enjoyed our stay at the Finca. The house is beautiful, spacious and finished with lovely decorations. To be able to swim in our own pool is a treat! Easy access to town and other places in Costa Rica. We have made this our home base making day excursions to the beach, San José and all of the great towns in the Central Valley. The gardens are beautifully kept and we have enjoyed the fruits that grow on the property. Thanks and we hope to come back!
This place was wonderfully clean and tastefully decorated by the owner Tonia who was very helpful before we arrived to Costa Rica and thereafter well. The Manager Pied and Yvonne were very kind and tried their best make sure that we were comfortable and pleases. We wish them luck as they settled in their own place in Atenas area. Tonia has a couple of native Nicaraguan working as caretakers, they keep the gardens very nice and are helpful. The most impressive of the house is that is kept very clean. we loved to seat and watch all the birds and identified a fair number of birds some of them were new to our list. Swimming before dinner was one of my favourite past time. It was wonderful to enjoy the pool to myself which was always clean by Emilio, the caretaker. We walked to the marked to buy fresh fruits three times while there. It is a 30 minutes walk but we had to watch for the traffic , however, we enjoyed the walk and also meeting other Americans who were happy to fill us in with stories and news of the people they knew and the places we should eat and the places where we should buy our grocery. We have been to Costa Rica several times and Quinta Paula was really a great choice for us. By the end of our stayed January 20th, I was getting back in shape. from here we travelled to Punta Leona for a day of swimming, them we also visited Grecia a nice charming twin and Sarchi where one can admire the traditional craft and the wood furniture. We do not like to eat out too much we eat simple meals so it was nice to have a kitchen with all the necessary utensils to prepare our meals. In summary this place was an amazing find and mostly the owners and the people she employes made it possible for us to enjoy our first visit to Atenas and area stress free.and lastly, they are two well behaved dogs, Apolo and Atlas Tonia that came and visit they are very respectful and just looking for a bit of love. We really appreciated them!
We hope to return to Quinta Paula!
All the best Tonia
We could not have been happier at our stay here! We have never been to Costa Rica and were excited to stay in a home that would serve as our base camp to sightsee and explore this beautiful country. Quinta Colina Paula was perfect! From the beautiful furnishings and decoration, to the impeccable cleanliness, to the helpful property managers, to the amazing pool and outdoor living space, this house has it all!! We wanted for nothing during our stay, except for a car which we rented a couple days into the trip because things were farther away than we anticipated. Even the pathway into the house from the gate is long, winding, and steep, which is great for viewing and privacy but can be strenuous for some. We loved the little town of Atenas with its friendliness and rural feel. Aad and Marian were fantastic property managers/tour guides/informants! We felt cared for by both of them, and we learned so much from them! We suggest you have them pick you up at the airport and take you to town because they can share with you a lot of information and help you get your bearings. We also stopped at the local supermercado to get food and drinks during our pick up. A great day trip is the El Toledo Organic Coffee plantation tour with lunch at a Tican house prepared by a Tia of the coffee plantation - real authentic experience is priceless. Poas and LaPaz were awesome and relatively close. Jaco is enjoyed by the teenagers and surfers. We cannot wait to come back and stay at Quinta Colina again - as it was the perfect place to just get lost and relaxed for a day and then walk to Guanacaste restaurant or the Ceviche shop just up the road a few houses; while at the same time, the central location made it perfect to explore. The weather was perfect too! New Year's Eve was so special as we watched the fireworks light up the night sky over San Jose from the Quinta. Con mucho gusto we write this review! You'll love it!
Having stayed at numerous 4 and 5 star resorts in Costa Rica before, we have found the perfect alternative. This property is superb. The gardens are lush and beautiful and the home is spacious, clean and secure. It is also located conveniently close to Atenas (less than 10 minute drive) . The town has everything you would need ie. gas, groceries, and restaurants. The temperatures in this region are perfect and allows you to just sit back and relax by the pool watching the hummingbirds go by. We highly recommend getting up just before 6 a.m. just to experience the wild symphony of bird calls at this time of day. Arranging our trip to this paradise was easy and dealing with Tonia and the property managers was effortless..Thank you so much for our best Costa Rican vacation so far
Our week at Colina Paula was delightful. The house, owners and staff were professional and welcoming. All the posted reviews truly reflect our experience and comfort in this charming home. Read the reviews, and make your reservation- you will be impressed from the moment the gate opens, revealing all the charms that await you.
Our 8 day stay at Colina Paula was one of our best vacations ever! This was our fourth trip to CR and we are sold on Atenas. The weather was perfect, not to hot during the day and cool at night for great sleeping. The panoramic views from the house are incredible with a view of the Poas Volcano. We spent hours lounging by the pool, laying in the hammocks and just relaxing. The landscaping is incredibly beautiful from the moment you enter the property and creates a very private and peaceful setting. The home is located close to Atenas making it easy for shopping and necessities. We had no trouble catching a cab to and from town. The central location also makes it easy to take side trips to various points of interest. We took a wonderful day trip to La Paz Waterfalls Gardens to see Toucans, Butterflies, Humming Birds and the beautiful waterfalls and gardens. We look forward to another stay at Colina Paula in the near future! We would highly recommend this property to our friends.
