I am a retired school teacher and college administrator in love with the western North Carolina mountain communities around Boone. I spent my childhood in Ohio, raised my family of 5 children in Michigan and lived and worked in Chicago for 20 years before retirement. As a mid-westerner I especially enjoy our wonderful mountain climate; warmer in Winter, cooler in Summer and so so beautiful in Spring and Fall.
Sally Schwyn purchased this cabin in 2005
I have always been attracted to older homes, with large trees on the property, and enjoy returning them to their intended grace and beauty. We bought this tired, older log cabin in 2005 and spent 3 years restoring it to its current condition. I love being an Inn Keeper and sharing my home and its beautiful setting with our guests and my family when they can come for a visit. In addition to the upper cabin with its 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, etc, there is a separate apartment on the lowest level which is where I live when I am not traveling.
This property used to be a Christmas tree farm - the trees now tower over 70 feet and provide a year round green buffer from the local roads that make getting to points of interest easy and convenient. I like sitting on the hill next to the cabin and looking at the profile of Grandfather Mountain. It's a great way to start the day with a cup of coffee and an even better way to unwind after a busy day of mountain activity or just sightseeing our beautiful mountain area.
The cabin was a wonderful retreat for our week-end. The kids loved the board games, bears and Boone. Great trip to Blowing Rock and Mast General. The view of Grandfather Mountain was majestic! Thanks for sharing your home with our families.
We rented the cabin during family weekend at ASU. The cabin was clean and the description/pictures were accurate. Sally was very helpful in checking in as well as during our stay. The cabin is also very stocked with pots/pans, dishes, silverware, etc. With a student at ASU, we will definately be back!
We had an excellent time during our stay at Red Bear Cabin!!! Ms. Sallye and Mr. Michael were super host and everything was exactly as described. I especially enjoyed walking around the property and taking pictures while the kids loved playing outside in the beautiful yard. The sunflowers were my absolute favorite ... I have never seen such huge flowers before!! The kids also enjoyed the fire pit...s'mores 2 nights in a row!!! My parents also enjoyed their stay and are already talking about our stay next year!!!! I'll be contacting you soon, Ms. Sallye!!!!!!
This was our second year spending a family vacation in this cabin. Last year we were able to ignore the paper-thin walls and floors since everything else was enjoyable. This year, not so much. The storm windows were not lowered and so we had to go around "winterizing" the cabins very old windows. The doors had such bad weather stripping that you could see large gaps of light around them. And to top it off, the thermostat was "touchy" and refused to work properly during a very cold spell (-10 windchill!). We had 3 very small children in the house and yet the owner did not return our call or text about the thermostat. The only warm spot for the kids was sitting close to the fire. Bedtimes were a nightmare due to the cold. She needs to put a little maintenance and effort into the cabin to make it comfortable again. I would only recommend this cabin in the warmer months and to groups with no young children.
Five friends and I stayed at Red Bear Cabin this summer. We so enjoyed sitting on the deck drinking coffee in the mornings and all the little extra touches provided by Sally. It's in a great location, and we'd probably stay there again if we take another trip to the mountains!
More wonderful than we imagined; a perfect home away from home w/a host who is spectacular. Add that to the local area scenery and attractions in the area - perfect in every way. We even chose to spend half of one of our vacation days in the cabin by the fireplace - and that's what vacation is all about!
Only one disappointment - the cabin was already rented for the holiday season, because I was coming back for another stay.
Perfect just off-highway location with no steep driving, half-way between Boone and Banner Elk. Close to river rocks - swimming, fishing, skiing, tubing, sledding, hiking, Grandfather Mountain, gem mining, ASU, galleries, antiques, shopping, restaurants and more.
Other Activities: Hawksnest family zip-line and tubing center, largest in the East is only 3 miles from the cabin. Tweetsie Railroad, Mystery House, Blowing Rock, Mast General Store near-by.
Ski: 15 minutes to Sugar Mountain skiing, 15 minutes beyond that is Beech Mountain. 5 minutes to Hawksnest Family Tubing Center and 20 minutes to Appalachian Ski Area. Winter hiking and fishing close by as well.
