This is south of Kona about 30 minutes in a lovely area surrounded by coffee plantations and tropical fruit trees, about 1-2 miles up the hill from a couple of the best snorkeling spots on the island where hundreds of dolphins gather every morning (you can snorkel with them). The location is authentic and only lightly touristy. The units are surrounded by avocado, mango, orange, papaya, and other fruit trees. The fruit literally falls off the trees and it is fresh and delicious. Everything you need (coolers, spices, towels, cooking oil, coffee grinders french presses, internet & TV) is at the house and if they don't have it, just ask. Buy food only - no supplies are needed. David and Beth are lovely hosts who keep to themselves, are very nice and polite and wonderful, and their units are clean and great. The pool is small, but very nice. You have your own entrance and it is mostly private. Dark roast Kona is better, less fruity.. FYI!
For my wife and I (in our early 30s) loved it and stay here again. It was more than we could have asked for particularly for the price. Often spoil ourselves with nice hotels on vacations (for example we went up to the 4 Seasons for dinner one night) but were glad to be here. Friends who visited, who were staying at a high end resort, said they would rather stay here. Other friends booked in September.
The best part: THE EQUIPMENT that comes with this rental. We did not rent and saved us hundreds and pushed us to be active. Rentals are usually $50 per day per item just starting, so this is a huge expense saving. By noon each day, we usually did something amazing.
Light things to mention are:
- The white sand, beautiful, and consistently not rainy beaches are a little north about 35 minutes in the resort areas, but up where there are no VRBO rentals. South Kona, because its closer to the volcano, is very tropical and at times of the year it lightly sprinkles in the afternoons at worst case scenario. But is usually beautiful in the mornings and there are also great beaches near by (just not white sand). We would go up there in the afternoons if it rained, which was fine and not difficult.
- The apartment itself is very tropical, slightly thin walled, but it is great and tremendous value. This is how houses are built in the area. The decorations are cheesy but its OK. Bathroom is only OK.
- Restaurants are a little far,10-15 minutes at closest.
The other positive reviews speak for themselves, and we agree. Enjoy!
