My wife & I purchased this house in 2004 simply because we absolutely love the area, the ocean views & breezes, and it's always cool (temperature wise) in this location. In fact, we've never had mosquitos because it's just so breezy here. The upstairs great room is where we spend almost all of our time just reading, sitting, eating and drinking. Here's a photo of us with our oldest daughter walking on the beach at sunrise around 6:30AM - please excuse the morning hair.

The Owner purchased this house in 2004

We have been traveling to Kailua since 2001 on a regular basis, and decided to purchase this home once we saw the beauty of the house. Although we live in San Francisco, we come and stay at our Kailua home about four times a year to just enjoy the beauty of Hawaii and visit our friends there. We choose to stay during the off-season when visitor demand is lower, but we've decorated and remodelled our home to make it comfortable for all of our guests in the hopes that our renters will treat it like their own home and share our love of the home.

We've been working with Claudia (property manager) and Robin (renting agent) from Trinity Properties in order to make sure that our home is maintained in as tip-top shape as possible. Living on the ocean is essentially owning a boat on land as the maintenance is non-stop. Everything gets destroyed by the ocean salt water so there is certainly a price to be paid for living right on the ocean. Thus, we are constantly maintaining the house and have the windows professionally cleaned every week, the pool cleaned every week, and the house scrubbed each after every weekly visitor. You'll get to enjoy the fantasy and beauty of living on the ocean without the expense & work of taking care of it (that's my job!). We are always up early in the morning to watch the sunrise as it is breathtaking everyday for us, even after owning the house for six years. Then we close the day with sunset on the lanai overlooking the pool with a glass of wine. Nothing could be more relaxing.

Great view - Poorly maintained

We were very excited about our 4 weeks in Hawaii when we arrived at what we thought was a high-end vacation rental. As the agent showed us around,first thing was the broken and disabled ice-maker. I could not understand why it would not be repaired or replaced. How could you have a warm weather vacation rental and expect the guests to fill and empty ice trays? (A replacement refrigerator costs about 3 days rental costs.) The next morning we discovered the old, burnt coffee-maker, the broken toaster and the small 7 inch frying pan for a house that sleeps 6. We bought a new coffee maker and a large frying pan. The next day the barbeque grill didn’t work properly. The mattresses and pillows don’t appear to have been replaced in many years, so a good night sleep was difficult; there was a heavy bed spread on the beds when we arrived (which may have been cleaned in the last few years) but not a single light-weight blanket; there are no screens on most of the windows so, because of the mosquitoes and other bugs we had to leave the air conditioner on most of the time; the rain gutters don’t drain properly so the house has its own built-in mosquito breeder; there is no place in the house to eat outdoors which was very disappointing; the master bedroom had a clock radio on both sides of the bed – one was perhaps 20 years old, the other worked on one channel; there are two televisions in the house which also seem to be decades old. There is no clothing dresser in the bedroom, the one in the bedroom closet is pad-locked presumably with the owners stuff that is too good for the renters. In addition the house is right up against its two neighbors. On one side is a rundown mess of a house, and on the other is a quite friendly woman with a peculiar interest in what’s going on in the house.It would not be fair of me if I didn’t point out that this house has a beautiful heated swimming pool that we loved. And that the view from the living room is spectacular. The house comes with a loose-leaf binder full of rules, including extra charges if the tenant moves any furniture. There are no similar requirements of the landlord. The rental agency does not seem to supervise the landlord’s rental or the quality of the house’s amenities. This rental sent me the distinct message that the landlord is eager to rent at the maximum rate possible while trying to minimize their costs.
Owner's Response: I am the owner of Kaimalino Kai and feel terrible that you had such a bad experience. Please allow me to respond to each and every one of your complaints. First, the icemaker has been turned off because of the inability to keep this mechanical device operating smoothly in an oceanfront climate. The property manager explained that there were ice cube trays in the freezer and offered to bring a bag of ice every two days during your stay. Second, at your insistence, both the coffee maker and toaster were replaced during your stay. Appliances in our oceanfront environment take a beating, and I regularly replace many of our appliances. I’m sorry that you choose not to mention that the appliances were replaced during your stay. Third, there is an entire set of cooking pots and pans made available for all guests. In fact, other reviewers have often noted the fully stocked kitchen as one of the delightful features of the house. Fourth, there are no mosquitoes anywhere in the house. The windy conditions of Kailua make it near impossible for mosquitoes to exist. Keeping the aircon running prevented you from enjoying the beautiful ocean breezes coming through the house when the windows are open. Fifth, the beds are in magnificent condition as described by other tenants in other reviews. I purchase new pillows once a year because the weather really beats them up. Sixth, the BBQ was not working when you arrived because the tank had run out of gas. My property manager came over to hook up the spare tank in the garage and it worked right away. Finally, it seems that very few people ever watch TV at the house - we have had almost no complaints about the televisions. We do, however, plan to look into replacing the televisions. My property manager told me that you left a voicemail after your first day because of the icemaker and that message was filled with four letter words. I’m really sorry that you chose to make your stay so difficult – our exceptionally professional property manager was more than happy to do what she could to make your stay a positive one. Leaving a profanity-laced message does not lend itself to making people want to help you but they did their job by providing you with a new coffee pot, a new toaster, hooking up the BBQ gas tank, and offering to bring you ice every two days. Both my property manager and I do our very best to make everyone’s stay a memorable one, and we wish that we could have done this for you and your family.

Kaimalino Kai is a luxurious home on a stunning oceanfront location that provides an excellent base from which to explore Oahu. Breathtaking ocean views surround you upstairs in the open plan living/dining/kitchen great room, where you can enjoy reading, dining with family and friends, and entertaining. Beautifully designed, impeccably furnished, and meticulously maintained. Built-in sound system offers music when you take a break from the soothing sounds of the breaking surf. The Wi-Fi works well even with six adult power users (Our group values high connectivity and constant access to online media.) The kitchen comes fully equipped, and for the discerning cook there’s nothing better than taking your treasures from the Kailua Farmer’s Market and preparing something spectacular while gazing over at the Mokulua Islands. Just behind the kitchen, the spacious lanai looks out over the pool and the gorgeous Ko’olau mountain range. Although beautiful to gaze over, soothing to listen to, and revitalizing to breathe, the ocean coast and air make for a harsh environment -- congratulations for keeping everything in excellent shape throughout the house.

The ground level family room area gives you another large area to relax, with access to the large deck ocean lanai – the perfect place to welcome the day at sunrise. The three well-appointed bedrooms have comfortable beds, great storage, and individually controlled air conditioners and ceiling fans. The bathrooms feature top-notch finishes, good amounts of storage, and excellent water pressure. Hair dryers, too. Everything has been thought of. In the private, lush garden sits the large pool, which is well maintained with lots of pool toys available. A fun, refreshing place to convene after a day in paradise.

What a great location for Oahu explorations. Turtles in the cove a short walk away, world-renowned Kailua beach a 5 minute drive away, Kailua town featuring small one-of-a-kind shops and restaurants as well as leading retailers like Whole Foods, easy access into Waikiki and the night spots of Honolulu, whale watching along the east coast, sights of the North Shore and much more. Up to date information on all that Oahu offers is available at the house and through the property manager beforehand.

Kaimalino Kai has the amenities of a 6 star hotel with the ambiance of well loved home. Mahalo for sharing your piece of paradise and giving us all the Aloha Spirit.

Paradise Found!

We had a fantastic visit and experience! The house had everything we needed. Fully equipped kitchen, high speed internet, a good sound system and plenty of room to spread out. The decor was very elegant. The upstairs consisted of a large open kitchen and a living/dining area with floor to ceiling windows that provided spectacular 180 degree views of the ocean and surrounding area. The pictures on the website do not do it justice. All of the bedrooms were very comfortable and roomy. Each morning we sat on the deck with our coffee and watched the sunrise while the waves rolled in. After a day at the beach or exploring the island we would return home to barbecue by the pool and enjoy a wonderful dinner overlooking the ocean. Each night we would fall asleep to the sound of the waves.
The house itself is located in a quiet neighborhood so we could enjoy the peace and quiet but just a very short drive to Kailua town and beaches. It is also convenient to downtown Honolulu for more serious shopping and sightseeing. This is by far, the best rental house we have stayed in. The facilities were top quality and very well maintained. Kudos to the owner and the management company. If we had one complaint is that we only had the house for one week. Next time we will definitely book longer.

Awesome Home! Perfect for our party of 8.

We had a fantastic time with this home rental. The rooms were all beautifully appointed and had both the luxury, comfort and hawaiian feel. The pool was incredible and a perfect setting to start and end the day. The upstairs living area and kitchen was another favorite. TVs were not necessary and the incredible winds simply flowed through the house. It defintely felt like you were in the middle of the ocean. Sunrises were amazing too and the house was not too far away from Kailua Beach about a 5 minute drive. The ocean side gave my two little girls the opportunity to explore. Waves crashing, wind blowing and the warm weather was a perfect combination.

Beautiful property and home. Ocean view is incredible and sound of waves on the beach is heard throughout. Enjoyed by whole family, our daughter and her husband and kids. Beach and lava rocks were a constant source of fun. The pool is well kept with plenty of swim toys for all. Wish there was a TV upstairs for morning news while watching the waves. The management team was outstanding and a great source of help.
