In addition to St. Michael, the city’s other namesake, Ignacio de Allende y Unzaga was born in San Miguel in 1769. His family home is now a National Museum and sits on one corner of the main square known as El Jardin (The Garden). As a young man he became a major figure for Independence and together with Father Hidalgo led forces against the Spanish occupiers in 1810. In recognition of his heroic efforts, the government changed the name of San Miguel to San Miguel de Allende in 1826.
*Known as Spain’s colonial jewel, it has always been and remains a city full of surprises hidden behind 50 foot stone walls and wrought iron adorned balconies. Within are stunning courtyards and lush gardens only visible when the magnificent old doors are laid open. The interiors now house gourmet restaurants, luxurious shopping, art galleries, museums and much more. The cobblestone streets and numerous public fountains and parks complete the trip to the 1700’s.
