Sandy River Beach is located 4 miles from the small and quaint fishing village of Jonesport which touts being the 'lobster boat capital of the world'. Lobster boat races are part of the extensive July 4th celebration. Purchase lobsters at the local wharfs to steam at the cottage, or enjoy meals at rustic restaurants that feature a variety of freshly caught fish. Visit the local Sardine Museum, Clam Hatchery, or hike through Great Wass Island Nature Preserve.
There are historical sites and attractions throughout this area of Downeast Maine, including an original 1940's movie theatre in Millbridge featuring the latest movies, the Historic Burnham Tavern (1770) and the annual Bluberry festival in Machias, in August. Whalewatching, a number of 9 hole golf courses, Campobello Island (summer home of Franklin D. Roosevelt), Quoddy Head Lighthouse and state park, and the Bar Harbor Acadia National Park regions are each 20-90 minute drives from Sandy River Beach.
