Villa + Farmhouse, Sleeps 10 - 15

High above Lucca 'Casa Berti' is a handsome 17th-century villa that is, first and foremost, an unusually well-appointed private family home. Set in an extensive estate, it is a villa of rare charm and peacefulness with its own farmhouse, outbuildings, artist’s studio, a private swimming pool, terraced gardens, olive slopes, fruit trees and woodland. The villa itself sleeps ten guests. The farmhouse, located near the main house, is also available and sleeps a further five.

Families are welcome, and children well provided for. The house, a tranquil retreat, is reached by a track that zigzags up from the village church through its own olive terraces. The views are exceptional, even by Italian standards. Farmhouses and villas, fields, vineyards and olive groves, hilltops and valleys, unfurl below you.

The villa itself has been restored with integrity and authenticity. Its lofty interior spaces—high ceilings, large and numerous windows and double doors, arcaded entrance and commanding position—mark Casa Berti as a true villa. The ancient thick walls ensure a cool interior even in the height of summer, and throughout there is relaxed refinement. A terracotta-tiled terrace, lined with lemon trees, leads onto a shaded pergola with a large travertine table and iron chairs. In summer this is, in effect, an outdoor living and dining room.

A gas grill, unusual in Italian homes, makes outdoor cooking simple. The swimming pool (10 x 6 meters, with shallow end and Roman steps), is set just below the villa on a separate, deep terrace. Sheltered and with all-day sunlight, it has sweeping views of the valley. A second simpler pergola provides shade. There are handsome pool loungers and furnishings.

Above the villa is the farmhouse, restored to the same high standards as the main house, providing sleeping for a further five people. Independent but close enough to the main house to sleep a total group of fifteen people, it has its own garden and a wood-burning, fully functional pizza oven. An evening of pizza-making is great fun for all ages.

Casa Berti has quantities of superb estate-produced extra virgin olive oil and limoncello, as well as a selection of the best local wines for guests to enjoy. Casa Berti is a great place from which to explore northern Tuscany, but once here you may not want to leave.

About Mrs Jean Gooder

Casa Berti is owned and shared by two families. It was bought in 1997 when the advert for its sale was spotted by chance, following a wonderful holiday there by both families combined. One of the family spent his honeymoon there as well before it came on the market.

Why Mrs Jean Gooder chose Aquilea

We all fell in love with Casa Berti when renting it one summer from the previous owners and were looking for a house in Italy that could accommodate the growing families. We wanted somewhere secluded, with reliably-lovely weather during the summer months that could be a home away from home for all of us. Casa Berti, with its warmth and simplicity, answered all our needs. We have invested much time, love and money in making the house comfortable, practical and beautiful.

What makes this villa unique

Our house is one of the most tranquil places I know. It is set above the small village and church. There are wooded hills all around the property with endless walks and stunning views. It is lovely to be there at any time of year and the property is within easy reach of the cultural centres of Tuscany. The house itself offers plenty of diversions for rainy days (snooker, table tennis, games and puzzles, TV) as well as for sunshine. We keep a stock of toys and games there that guests are welcome to use and the kitchen is very well equipped because we all like cooking. It is decorated and furnished as we like it, not just as a rental property. We hope that you would love it as much as we do.

We visited Casa Berti in the summer of 2012. Children and adults alike enjoyed the several views, family fun at the pool, the reading aloud of the history of the Buffalo Sodiers, Wimbledon on TV, and our journeys to Forte dei Marmi and to Barga, as well as to the cold caves nearby, where the kids learned about ancient stalactites. We toured Lucca, Lucca, and again lovely Lucca, on bikes and on foot, and enjoyed eating at l’Antica and Erasmo, Butterfly, and the pretty restaurant in Pietrasanta. We will remember fondly the lemon trees and olive groves at Casa Berti, the exceptional warmth and efficiency of Margherita, and the skills of Abitalia. Also, good books!"

We brought family and friends to Casa Berti to share in our love and happiness following our Italian wedding. We could not have chosen a better place! The beauty, tranquillity, and overall marvelousness of your home cannot be exaggerated. We spent our week hiking, running, swimming, cooking, eating, conversing, playing games and reading, debating, and visiting the beautiful Lucca and Pisa. Our group came from Marseille and Paris, New York City, Malibu, California, and Denver Colorado. All of us thank you with all of our hearts for creating and sharing such a lovely place.
