Farmhouse, 2 Bedrooms + Library, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

Welcome to La Barraliere-B'iette!

La Biette consists of 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom and sleeps 4 to 5 people is situated within the grounds of the large family farmhouse, La Barraliere, lovingly restored by the present owners in 1992.

This charming small house situated in the heart of the Côtes du Rhône region of Haute Provence is completely surrounded by vineyards and beatiiful views. It has its own private garden and parking. The house provides the peace and tranquility of the countryside, yet is within easy reach of all the region's points of interest. Residents of La B'iette also have access to La Barraliere, the main family home, where they will find a well-stocked library of books and music as well as a large collection of modern art works. Attached to the residence is a magnificent two-floor art gallery that hosts the annual 'Non Objectif Sud' modern art event. When not hosting exhibitions, this space can function as a wonderful 'atelier' for painting, sculpting, and music or as a studio retreat for yoga and quiet meditation. I have stayed in this delightful farmhouse annex with my elder sister on several occasions in recent years, usually over the Easter holidays and at other times of the year. It is quite charming and comfortable, with two double bedrooms, shower room which includes a washing machine, a large living/dining area all on one level, which is a definite advantage for us as my sister has difficulty coping with stairs. There is an additional sleeping area in the mezzanine above. Cooking facilities are well equipped. A small walled garden provides privacy, with larger open spaces in the grounds of the house.
The surrounding countryside is quite delightful, and there are any number of interesting places to visit for a day out, not to mention the numerous vineyards in this area of the Cote du Rhone region offering tastings of their excellent wines.
Apart from wine, nearby towns and some larger villages have weekly markets showing splendid arrays of local produce – vegetables, fruits, meats, spices, clothing, typical Provencal material, soaps, pottery, tools; literally anything and everything. All in all, a most relaxing place to stay and unwind, or to explore the many interesting and historic towns, villages etc. in the region – for example; Avignon where the popes resided in the Palais des Papes in the 14th century, and the famous bridge (pont) of the song; the Pont du Gard, built by the Romans; the Roman amphitheatre of Nimes; Aix en Provence; the abbey at Senanque; L’isle sur La Sorgue; La Fontaine de Vaucluse; the Camargue; and many more. There’s plenty to see and do.

Second Visit. Wonderful Stay. Watched Spring Arrive in Provence.

  • 5 of 5
My partner and I stayed for 2 weeks at this lovely property in 2012. We returned in 2013 -- for 3 weeks. Maybe the next time our stay will be even longer. We have been very happy residents.
The house is a restored barn and is attached to an old stone farmhouse in a rural setting. Vineyards surround the house in all directions. The villages of Tulette and Visan, with shopping and cafes, are a short walk or drive. The house is roomy, with full kitchen (fridge, burners and oven, dishwasher, all cooking and eating utensils), bathroom with large shower, clothes washer, and two comfortable bedrooms downstairs. A large mezzanine offers additional sleeping or living space. We enjoy cooking and ate virtually all our meals at the cottage.
We had some lovely weather this past year and had the pleasure of sharing the arrival of spring. The property has blossoming trees, irises, huge rosebushes, a spectacular vine of wisteria -- all of which were coming into bloom. We watched the gnarled grapevines sprout the new year's growth. Wildflowers -- our favorites are the poppies -- were everywhere.
We particularly recommend the local markets -- Tulette on Monday, Vaison-la-Romaine on Tuesday, and Nyons on Thursday. But go early. These are weekly community events, turnouts are huge, and parking -- as the morning progresses -- becomes a problem. There's a wonderful butcher shop on the town "cours" in Tulette. Also cafes, two bakeries, a tabac, and a flower shop whose owner prepared several gift bouquets for us, showing great skill and sensitivity. The "U Marche" on the outskirts of Tulette and the "Hypermarche" at Valreas are convenient alternatives with extended shopping hours. There are inexhaustible resources for sampling the local wines.
The owner is welcoming, accommodating, flexible -- has clearly wanted us to have the most enjoyable time possible. A delightful person.
Can't think of any negatives.

Great House, Lovely Region, Relaxing Stay (very!), Charming Hosts. We Hope To Return.

  • 5 of 5
We spent two weeks in mid-April at this comfortable, welcoming house. Website photos enticed us to arrange a visit, and we were not disappointed. The house is more spacious than we had pictured it being and is equipped for real cooking (a "must" for us).
You can be as private as you wish -- there's an enclosed, gated garden leading to the entrance door. But the owner also encouraged us to make use of public areas in the adjoining "big house" -- including its even larger kitchen. Nights were quiet and dark. We slept well.
Irises and poppies and wisteria were out, and huge rose bushes were about to explode into bloom. Rosemary was in flower. Both the house and the grounds were well-maintained. We took photos. Then more. Then more. Working vineyards surround the property in every direction.
You can see the villages of Tulette, to one side, and Visan, to the other. Both offer shopping, restaurants, and cafes. There are two bakeries in Tulette and an especially good butcher shop -- all on the little central "place," where we also filled containers with drinking water from the town fountains. A "U" Market in Tulette and the "Hypermarche" as you enter Valreas offer convenient supermarket shopping.
We visited most of the markets in the area. All were crowded, and the "big" ones -- especially Vaison-la-Romaine and Nyons -- offered challenges for parking. Go early -- or be prepared to walk. But we recommend them all.
Avignon, Uzes, and the Pont du Gard were easy excursions. For us, the pleasures of domesticity took precedence over more ambitious sight-seeing. Others might choose differently.
Final note: Our host was patient, accommodating, and welcoming. She clearly wanted us to enjoy our stay. And we did.

Relaxation in La Drôme Provençale

  • 5 of 5
We had two weeks in summer staying with friends at La Barraliere. It is a wonderful retreat and a credit to the current owners Joy and David for the huge amount of work they have done to restore the beauty and elegance of the original farmhouse and gardens. La Barraliere is a great location for exploring the La Drôme Provençale. With beautiful views of Mt Ventoux and the surrounding Côtes du Rhône village vineyards, it is a quiet and peaceful place to relax. Our best memories were centered on the daily search for food and wine from the local markets and producers, followed by time in the kitchen preparing the most wonderful meals and picnics from the day’s gatherings. The market at Nyons, the vineyards of Rasteau and Beaumes de Venise and picnics at Les Dentelles de Montmirail were favorites. We were also lucky to have the Tour de France come through Tulette during our stay – great fun and a great spectacle.

Oasis in Provence

  • 5 of 5
Having been to" la Biette" for the last 3 years with a minimum stay of 4-5 weeks, I'm sure that gives you an idea just how much we love this wonderful oasis amongst the vineyards . The property is clean and comfortable and has all one needs. A private walled garden is perfect for outdoor lunches and the main house has a large garden and huge courtyard which can be freely used. A true bonus is no neighbours ......just acres and acres of vineyards. My husband rides the owner's bike into the little village each morning to get a baguette and the English paper. Charming villages are within easy reach and all with their own market days. ........ Vaison la Romaine , Grignan, Avignon, Carpentras .
We always go to Sablet and spoil ourselves dining at "Les Abeilles". Quite expensive but well worth the experience . We found out that there is an Australian in that village that runs cooking classes.!!! The local co-op for wine is very near and the "bulk" wine is more than acceptable. We also explored the Rasteau area and the wines there are just stunning. Everywhere you go one finds friendly shop keepers and people SO HELPFUL ..... just try a little French and smile . It works

Exceptional Experience!

  • 5 of 5
Our Canadian family of four spent a wonderful week in Provence at LaBarraliere as part of a three week adventure in France. It was the highlight of our trip. The house was lovely - two bedrooms below, a loft up top and a nice open kitchen and living room. Joy and David welcomed us warmly with drinks the first night and a fantastic Provencial lunch Sunday at 1pm - this still is one of our daughters favourite memories of the entire trip. Tulette is lovely - daily visits to the shops and markets kept us well fed. Our days started early with short drives to the surrounding countryside to see the sights - we did very well indeed...Gordes, Pont Du Gard (amazing!), Nimes (home of the Olive), a long day drive to Monte Carlo, a day in a gorge paddling in a canoe, countless ancient towns and magnificent castles. We sampled wine in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and every lunch was spectacular. We'd return in the late afternoon in the heat of the day and enjoy LaBarraliere...the sun would set over the vineyards, the heat would rise and we'd eat in the garden listening to the sounds of the local countryside, sampling one of the fantastic bottles of wine we had stumbled upon that day. Provence did not disappoint and LaBarraliere was the perfect spot for the four of us to be based. Joy and David are perfect hosts.
