Imagine sitting at a table or reclining in a lawn chair, perched on the mountain side above Kealakekua Bay, looking over the southern Kona coastline with an unobstructed view at the 1200 ft elevation. 'Wow', you say, 'the view is incredible!' A veritable slice of paradise, with ocean glistening to the west and mountain slopes to the south. Your soul is at peace. Red cardinals and yellow finches are scampering for food. A canoe race or fishing tournament just might be happening in the ocean near the coastline.
We have such a place - a one-bedroom vacation rental on our working macadamia nut and coffee farm. This is where the South Kona Macadamia Nut Company processes its succulent nut products. The grounds around the rental have citrus and banana trees, but the orchard of coffee and macadamia nut trees comprise the commercial aspect of the farm.
The rental is in the lower level of the main house; a screened-in porch has a kitchenette and futon sofa. Very private.
Open another screen door and the avocado green walls of a large bedroom, complete with a queen-sized bed and tropical furnishings, greet you. The bathroom has a large shower. With a separate entrance, your privacy is assured.
Located on Napo'opo'o Road in Captain Cook on the big island of Hawaii, you are minutes away from the famous Kealakekua Bay and other Hawaiian sites of interest. Swim, snorkel, or kayak; drive around the island; visit the national parks; or, just stay put and soak up the view! Shopping centers are close by as are fine restaurants.

Experience life on a working mac nut farm (yum!) in the beautiful rural ambience of South Kona. Awaken to the dawn chorus of myriad birds, and fall asleep to the gentle pattter of Kona's famous misty rain (where all that green comes from!).
Your hosts Brad and Meris will do everything they can to make you comfortable. (And Brad can give you a lot of inside information on the history and sociology of South Kona). Co-hosts Blackie and Kai will be your best friends if you bring them the occasional biscuit.
While in South Kona be sure to: (1) visit Pu'uhonua O Honaunau (Place of Refuge) and snorkel at Two-Step (Honaunau Beach), (2) rent a Kayak from Ehu & Kai's on the bay (follow the signs) and paddle to the Capt. Cook monument where you can beach the boat and snorkel (and if you are lucky, the dolphins will come swim with YOU), and (3) have a down-home Hawaiian-style dinner at the Manago Hotel (we recommend the famous pork chops).
We had a great stay at this place. The studio is nice and clean, the kitchenette is well equipped to prepare breakfast and simple lunch/dinner. Awesome view of Kealakekua Bay! The owners are very nice and kind and they produce the best Mac Nuts!
My wife and I spent 3 great weeks staying at the SK vacation rental and truly enjoyed, and savored, every day at this great spot. The rental itself is clean, comfortable and set-up to totally immerse oneself in the Island environment. Evenings were often spent sipping a cold beverage on the comfortable outside patio area, in the relaxing over-sized chairs, admiring the incredible view of Kealakekua Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The enclosed lanai is another spot that allows one to be part of the outside environment while being protected from insects after the sunsets. The snorkeling in this area is some of the best in the world, and it is only about a 10-15 minute drive to the beach. Brad and Meris, the owners, are super nice people who run an actual working coffee and macadamia nut farm onsite. They are rare hosts in that they seem to know when you might need something or want to talk, but in general leave you to your own devices. The kitchen area is more then adequate for preparing breakfasts and lunches, as well as simple dinners, but if you want to spend your vacation cooking exotic gourmet meals, this might not be the ideal place for you. The location is perfect for a couple who want to experience the "country life" on the Big Island, be close to the best snorkeling, while still having reasonably easy access to the city amenities in Kailua-Kona, where one can find excellent shops, restaurants and live music.
We stayed here during our first trip to the Big Island this past February. After much deliberation about choosing a hotel vs. renting a cottage, we found this listing and are so happy we did! The view from the lanai is simply breathtaking. Waking up each morning and sipping Kona coffee while looking down upon Kealakekua Bay remains a favorite memory of Hawaii. Brad and Meris are kind and hospitable hosts, who are very knowledgeable about the island and left us fresh produce from their farm every day. We were so sad that we couldn't stay longer. This place is truly a little piece of Heaven!

All the places we stayed on the Big Island were wonderful, but this one was by far and away the best. First of all, there is the view, which is incredibly expansive and visible from the very comfortable lanai. Although the place is small, the lanai and outdoor living area help it to 'live big'.
The kitchen area (on the lanai) is small and a stove is not permitted, but the owners have made up for that by providing every possible kind of electrical appliance plus the grill outside. You can't cook Thanksgiving dinner for 12, but you should be able to pull off the kind of cooking most of us do on vacation quite nicely. The owners are around and helpful, but not intrusive. (And they grow really yummy macadamia nuts!) The bed is great, bathroom spacious, beach towels and mats provided. If we are on the Kona Coast again, this definitely will be where we stay!
