Most of the tourists know Amsterdam for its canals and its beautiful squares. The Dutch word for canal is gracht. Your apartment is located on the Keizersgracht. The Keizersgracht with the Prinsengracht and the Herengracht are the three main canals of Amsterdam. These canals were built in the 17th century when Amsterdam was the wealthiest city in the world. The rich merchants built their big monumental houses along these canals. You can still see these buildings with their step gables today.
The Leidse Square is a lively part of Amsterdam popular with both tourists and locals, situated south of Amsterdam's central Canal Belt. During the summer months expect to see street performers, especially at night, while from the middle of November until Christmas the square has an outdoor ice rink. The area is also home to a vast amount of theatres, live music venues, bars, cafes and restaurants including theatre Stadsschouwburg, comedy club Boom Chicago, Rock venue's Paradiso & Melkweg, American Hotel and the night club Jimmy Woo. Leidse Square is the perfect place to spend an evening or night.
The Leidse square is not the only square in Amsterdam. Another nice square is the Rembrandt square which is cozy with lots of terraces where you can order a cold drink and then look the street performers or at the statue of Rembrandt, the famous painters form the 17th century who painted the Night Watch and many other paintings.
