Fell asleep to the sound of the surf

  • 5 of 5
We spent a wonderful week in early April at this house. The area was so quiet--day and night. We enjoyed watching the surf spray as the waves crashed along the shore and listening to the pounding of the surf as we fell asleep. Saw dolphins and whales from lanai on first morning. Honomalino Beach was a wonderful place with few people. Spent a half hour watching the spinner dolphins put on a show there mid-morning on Sunday and not another soul in sight. Melanie was great to work with and provided great directions and information on beaches, restaurants, and grocery stores. The house was very clean and comfortable for our family of 4 and came with Hawaiian mood music too. Our 5 and 10 yr old daughters really loved it, too. Well-stocked kitchen and bath (lots of sunblock). Boogie boards, beach umbrella, cooler, and beach mats made for pleasant trips to Ho'okena Beach. We appreciated not having the long list of clean-up chores that you can encounter at some rentals as we had to leave early to get to the airport. Nearest grocery stores are in Oceanview which is closer if you forget something, but less selection than stores in Captain Cook or Kona. A great base for a fantastic first trip to Hawaii. We hope we'll get back again someday and would happily stay at Hula Hut again. This house was an incredibly good deal.

Great View and Well Appointed

  • 5 of 5
We loved our stay at this property - the owner made sure that all necessities were available (for example, we wanted to make bag lunches for a trip to Volcano park and found that there were plastic and paper bags in the pantry) - just little touches that made this seem like a real home. The distance from the city and the Volcano National Park was perfect for our trip - and the view was incredible. We had breakfast on the porch overlooking the ocean crashing against the coast - just beautiful. The only downside was the heat, but as mentioned by other reviewers, fans were available which we definitely employed in the evenings. Overall a perfect vacation.

Melanie also provided hiking directions to a nearby private beach which ended up being one of our favorite activities of the vacation. Thank you to Melanie for a great time - definitely recommend this property!

Private and quiet

  • 5 of 5
We chose this little house for our first trip to Hawaii. It was so quiet and peaceful ... we really appreciated that. We Northwesterners suffered a little the first few days with no air conditioning but we did get used to it and the ceiling fans and box fan really helped. We spent all our time at the house on the deck, anyway. It is a long and winding road (lol) to get there and a long drive to see anything... but I think that would be the case no matter where you stayed on Hawaii. Perfect place to stay if you won't miss the tourist hustle and bustle. DO BUY DRINKING, ICE AND COFFEE WATER before you get there. The containment water is just not drinkable. Buy groceries on the way as it is a good 30 minutes to a grocery. The Walmart in Kona has no produce or meat so skip it and go to the Safeway. Both are easy to find ... Melanie gave good directions for everything and this was the easiest VRBO rental I ever did regarding demands and expectations. Mahalo, Melanie!

Away from the crowds with one of the best views on the Island

  • 5 of 5
We have stayed at this property twice and will be staying there again in Feb. Located half way between Kailua Kona and Volcanos National Park which is perfect for exploring the east or west side of the island. Kind of secluded and away from the tourists at the bottom of Milolii Road, but the view can't be beat for the price. Directly across the street from the coastline, which was so great for WHALE WATCHING and falling asleep to the sound of the waves . The property has everything you would have at home and generously stocked including washer and dryer. 5 min drive to Milolii fishing village and then 15 min easy hike to one of the most beautiful secluded black sand beaches on the Island. Coffee on the huge lanai in the morning saying Aloha to the friendly residents as they take their morning walk around the Beach lots. But be respectful of the locals and don't speed or you will get stink eye. And for renters with extended stays there is satellite cable and internet. Year around great weather and some of the most beautiful sunsets you'll ever see. The host Melanie is very accommodating and quick to return calls or emails.

Evans stay

  • 4 of 5
We very much enjoyed our stay here. It was clean enough (not perfect), out of the way from any tourist attraction and with beautiful views. Having said that. The house is accessible from hwy 11. Its quite always from kona. 1.45 hrs on a good day. It's not in captain cook as address states. After a couple of days it felt way out there. If your the tourist type this place is not for you . if you're an adventurists like ourselves it's a dream. No air conditioning. Do not read over that. We really had a very relaxing and beautiful vacation here but it's not for everyone. Do your homework. Melanie was great also. On a side note. Two days before we left a porta potty was set up on lot across the street blocking the sunset picture taking. A eye sore. Looks like another home being built between the hut and beach. So sad.

A Serene, Other-worldly experience

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I had a very nice week at this home in Hawaii. The benefit is that it is right across the street from the Pacific (though not with a beach, just rocks); the view was fabulous, the serenity of listening to the ocean was wonderful. The house itself is very nice, with all the comforts of home. On the negative side, it is a terrifically inaccessible place to get to (20 minutes of excruciating switchbacks down from the highway), so that once you are there, you tend to go out only once a day.
The other problem is that no services of any sort are anywhere nearby. It's at least a 40-50 minute drive to get to stores and restaurants. Even a nice beach was a 20 to 30 minute drive. So we tended to leave after breakfast and not return until late afternoon or after dinner. But you tend to get used to the inaccessibility and just deal with it.
The place is perfect for someone who wants to get away from it all (though wi-fi keeps you connected with the world, and my cell phone worked just fine). Another issue that you have to get used to is the moonscape. All around is lava rubble, which is very alien to what we are used to, especially living in Florida. Finally, it should not go unremarked that the Big Island is very interesting, with so much to see and do. We were hard pressed to see everything in a week. But, it was a GREAT week.
