Located near the fishing village, South Kona, Big Island, Hawaii, this unique place provides a quiet get away from it all, a modern new home sits on the lava slightly above sea level. Large lanai. Fantastic ocean views. It is only 145 feet away from the sea, you will love waking up to beautiful ocean that is so close you can smell the fresh sea breeze and watch the waves crashing against the lava rock. See dolphins leaping and whales swimming right off the lanai(deck) while you toast your special occasions and watch the sunset from this home. At night you can enjoy the serenity of peace and quiet or open your windows and allow the soothing sound of the surf to put you to sleep. Enjoy the coastal breeze and the dry climate all year long. The secluded Honomalino Beach lined with coconut trees and containing archaeological sites and fishing village, are 1 mile away. It is what real Old, Hawaii was on the island.

Talk about out in the middle of Nowhere. This is fantastic.Crashing waves, bird sounds, lack of traffic. We are really looking forward to our stay. This place is more than we had hoped for.Thank youfor allowing us to stay here. The porch is awesome, house is situated wonderfully. We hope that in the future we would really like to come back here. The north&east part of the island is awesome, but we like the remote southwest part for it's peacefulnes, the waves at night.INCREDIBLE!

A SERENE, OTHER-WORLDLY EXPERIENCE

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I had a very nice week at this home in Hawaii. The benefit is that it is right across the street from the Pacific (though not with a beach, just rocks); the view was fabulous, the serenity of listening to the ocean was wonderful. The house itself is very nice, with all the comforts of home. On the negative side, it is a terrifically inaccessible place to get to (20 minutes of excruciating switchbacks down from the highway), so that once you are there, you tend to go out only once a day.
The other problem is that no services of any sort are anywhere nearby. It's at least a 40-50 minute drive to get to stores and restaurants. Even a nice beach was a 20 to 30 minute drive. So we tended to leave after breakfast and not return until late afternoon or after dinner. But you tend to get used to the inaccessibility and just deal with it.
The place is perfect for someone who wants to get away from it all (though wi-fi keeps you connected with the world, and my cell phone worked just fine). Another issue that you have to get used to is the moonscape. All around is lava rubble, which is very alien to what we are used to, especially living in Florida. Finally, it should not go unremarked that the Big Island is very interesting, with so much to see and do. We were hard pressed to see everything in a week. But, it was a GREAT week.

EVANS STAY

  • 4 of 5
We very much enjoyed our stay here. It was clean enough (not perfect), out of the way from any tourist attraction and with beautiful views. Having said that. The house is accessible from hwy 11. Its quite always from kona. 1.45 hrs on a good day. It's not in captain cook as address states. After a couple of days it felt way out there. If your the tourist type this place is not for you . if you're an adventurists like ourselves it's a dream. No air conditioning. Do not read over that. We really had a very relaxing and beautiful vacation here but it's not for everyone. Do your homework. Melanie was great also. On a side note. Two days before we left a porta potty was set up on lot across the street blocking the sunset picture taking. A eye sore. Looks like another home being built between the hut and beach. So sad.

SOOTHING FOR THE SOUL LOCATION

  • 5 of 5
This home was very clean, extremely well stocked, quiet location with superb sunsets! The drive from the highway is an adventure but well worth it if you appreciate the privacy and a unique location. Was a great home base if you are interested in seeing places in both sides of the island.

WONDERFUL

  • 5 of 5
LOVED SITTING ON THE LANAI AND BEING SO EXCITED EVERY TIME THE WHALES BREACHED. WONDERFUL! VERY WELL SUPPLIED WITH WATER TOYS. THE BEACH CHAIRS WERE REALLY APPRECIATED. KITCHEN HAD EVERYTHING. VERY CLEAN. WOULD ADVISE TO STOP FOR FOOD AND DRINKING WATER BEFORE ARRIVING. STORES ARE NOT CLOSE BY AND YOU WILL WANT TO START VACATION FIRST MORNING BECAUSE THERE IS SO MUCH TO DO.

10 DAYS IN PARADISE

  • 5 of 5
The Hula Hut was everything that Melanie had described in her listing.
We arrived very late at night and her directions were excellent, we had no problem finding the house. The house was clean and stocked with lots of towels, and many extras. The wifi worked well, the laundry facilities were excellent, and the beach items and coolers were nice to have.
If you are going to rent this property be advised that you will be driving a fair distance to get to places, but as we discovered it really doesn't matter where you stayed on the island you would have to drive. The beaches that Melanie recommended were excellent, we enjoyed them all. A visit to the Green Sand beach is a must, I do recommend a Jeep or paying the locals $10 one way to take you there from the parking lot. It is a good 3 mile hike.
Our 10 days in the house truly felt like we were in paradise everyday, walking beside the ocean on the lava, and seeing sea life every day, going for walks in the community and being a short drive away from a quite beach...Fantastic!
The one recommendation I would make for visitors is bring bug spray, mosquitoes come to the deck if there is no wind. The coils that Melanie provided work quite well, light them early.
Would I stay at The Hula Hut again, DEFINITELY!
