Talk about out in the middle of Nowhere. This is fantastic.Crashing waves, bird sounds, lack of traffic. We are really looking forward to our stay. This place is more than we had hoped for.Thank youfor allowing us to stay here. The porch is awesome, house is situated wonderfully. We hope that in the future we would really like to come back here. The north&east part of the island is awesome, but we like the remote southwest part for it's peacefulnes, the waves at night.INCREDIBLE!
We spent a wonderful week in early April at this house. The area was so quiet--day and night. We enjoyed watching the surf spray as the waves crashed along the shore and listening to the pounding of the surf as we fell asleep. Saw dolphins and whales from lanai on first morning. Honomalino Beach was a wonderful place with few people. Spent a half hour watching the spinner dolphins put on a show there mid-morning on Sunday and not another soul in sight. Melanie was great to work with and provided great directions and information on beaches, restaurants, and grocery stores. The house was very clean and comfortable for our family of 4 and came with Hawaiian mood music too. Our 5 and 10 yr old daughters really loved it, too. Well-stocked kitchen and bath (lots of sunblock). Boogie boards, beach umbrella, cooler, and beach mats made for pleasant trips to Ho'okena Beach. We appreciated not having the long list of clean-up chores that you can encounter at some rentals as we had to leave early to get to the airport. Nearest grocery stores are in Oceanview which is closer if you forget something, but less selection than stores in Captain Cook or Kona. A great base for a fantastic first trip to Hawaii. We hope we'll get back again someday and would happily stay at Hula Hut again. This house was an incredibly good deal.
After spending the first week of our holiday in the lush, tropical Puna District, driving down to the Hula Hut at Miloli'i was a wonderful and exciting contrast. The landscape formed by ancient and not-so-ancient volcanic flows is spectacular. The house is in a great location overlooking the black, craggy lava and blue ocean and you can watch magic sunsets - often a vivid orange due to the intermittent "vog" - from the huge lanai. Brightly coloured Saffron Finches visited us as we had our al fresco breakfast and vivid green geckos "chirped" under the eaves at dusk . We were too late in the season for whales, but did the enjoy the most amazing snorkelling and peaceful swims at nearby Honomalino Bay.The house is extremely comfortable and well appointed with a fun sense of Hawaiiana in every room. There were all sorts of useful items in the downstairs laundry; flippers, reef shoes, beach umbrella etc. If you feel like doing your own cooking, pick up ingredients such as ginger and cilantro at one of the farmers markets in the area and then ask around your neighbours to see if anyone has fish for sale. You'll look out from the lanai of the Hula Hut and see locals catching Ono and Ahi every morning! We would recommend the Hula Hut and Miloli'i in general for anyone who is after a quiet, non-touristy, holiday in a unique location.
This house and location are amazing. We watched a whale from the front deck as we at breakfast. Get place to stay if traveling the south part of the island. There is a porta potty right in front of the house as mentioned in another review but you can take a 145 ft walk to watch and photo the sunsets so not a big deal. Nice Jacuzzi Tub in lower level bedroom. I will definitely come back if on the island again. We had our 2 and 5 year olds with us and this place worked perfectly. Pick up water and groceries and get a way from it all.
This house has everything! Lots of room, all the amenities and in a quiet, small community right near the surf. About half way between Kona and the volcano, so well-located for seeing the park and on to Hilo. The owner was very helpful in providing information on getting there and things to do in the area.
The property has an amazing view - we enjoyed the sunset with the freshly BBQed fish or meat every night from the deck. Everything as advertised - we had a great stay on our honeymoon. Keep in mind that this property is for those who want to get it away from it all. During our stay, at night there was not a single person within at least a mile from us. The only sound that you hear is the sound of waves. The closest town with restaurants and real shopping (including food) is about 1.5 hours away. The closest food store is in the direction towards Volcanoes as you get on the highway (turn right), it is about 15-20 minutes away but it somewhat limited in selection. So, buy your food on the way there. Overall, a great property - Melanie did a great job keeping the whole process as simple as possible. Also, you must be able to walk up a set of stairs - the living quarters are on the 2nd floor.
