Designed for two, the Herons' Nest condo is a private and unique hideaway. Nestled in Tybee's historical Venetian Terrace District and sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and the Backriver Inlet the Herons' Nest offers a quiet retreat for honeymoons, anniversaries and rest and relaxation for hardworking couples. Lovingly designed by Tybee artists, Fred and Malinda Urvant, the condo reflects their eclectic Art-Deco style of design. Original paintings by the late Soho artist Larry Urvant and photographs by Fred Urvant adorn the walls. Restored Art-Deco furnishings and white tile floors complete the condo's cozy design.
Play on Tybee's scenic Backriver Beaches and return to your own private tropical garden to rest and relax. Enjoy a cool drink on your spacious screened porch or soak in the warm waters of your own private 4-person Jacuzzi. Rejuvenate in a soft-water shower and wrap yourself in fluffy towels of Egyptian cotton and sleep on European style linens. Luxury at the beach is only a moment away during your stay at the Herons' Nest.
We invite you to experience the true flavor of Tybee. Beautiful beaches, scenic landscapes, historic sites, excellent cuisine and a laid-back 1950's culture. Since the early 1900's Tybee has been called a utopia and we could not agree more. Please join us at the Herons' Nest where pleasant memories begin.
Fred and Malinda Urvant
Fred and I are both transplants from the East Coast who met in Atlanta. Our dream was to return to the Atlantic Ocean and in 1994 we began a search for the perfect spot. I had been retired from Dupont Corp. after 20 years and Fred was ready to make a career change. Our search ended on Tybee in the Historic Back River District. My mother moved from Canada and settled on Tybee with us and my son and grandchildren settled in the city of Savannah.
Malinda Urvant purchased this condo in 1995
Tybee was the perfect little beach city, quiet, picture perfect and so small that no one lived more than a few blocks from the beach. Housing values had not exploded yet and you were able to get a good value in a fixer upper.
** fast forward almost 20 years** Tybee is still the perfect little beach city and has retained it's 1950's atmosphere.
You only have to spend a few hours on Tybee to know that this Island is a one of a kind spot and be captured by it's unique culture. Close to Savannah and activities; Tybee offers a peaceful contrast. A calm, quiet and peaceful atmosphere is abundant. Walking the beach, riding bikes and watching sunsets is complimented by the generous and friendly nature of Tybee's local population who feel just grateful that they are able to reside on this little piece of paradise.
We had to pick the coldest night in 10 years! But it was nice snuggle weather.
Nice stay- Made it for the Quarterly yard sales- took home many treasuries.
Thanks for your hospitality- nice cottage.
Lots of guests talked about Sundae Cafe so we went- but did not know it was 90% fried food- not good place to eat if you like healthy food! Try Crab Shack!! Clean, simple food available.
We had the most wonderful time, thank you so much Malinda and Fred; you really made us feel at home. We enjoyed everything, thank you for supplying the bikes; we took an enjoyable ride on them every day. Your place is so beautiful and peaceful,we loved sitting around on the property and relaxing and getting in the in room hot tub!!!! Thank you for the tour of your 3 story deck, we loved the view of Tybee Island and the Back River. We can't wait to come back again, we will be visiting the Heron's Nest again this summer. We have told all of our family and friends to take a trip to Tybee Island and stay at the Heron's Nest!!!!
We called last minute to rent this property. Malinda and Fred were so wonderful to accommodate us . We originally was going to stay 2 nights , but loved it so much decided to stay longer. This is the perfect place to stay for a couple of nights or a month if you have time. We live in California , but are planning a return trip . It was a highlight of out travels.
- This is not a condo, much less upscale as stated on their website, but a small 1st floor apt inside a house. You hear the owners above you, and can never feel totally private. It is a feeling of staying in your parents basement. The owners do not pester you, however you do see them daily.
- Mosquitoes. Bring lots of bug spray. They do provide some, but you will need more. We had to buy candles to also help with the bugs. While they have a lovely garden area, we could not use it because of the mosquitoes.
- TV’s are tiny
- Hot tub is indoor, connected to living area
- Beach access is 4 blocks, but taking the bike makes this very easy.
- House comes with beach towels, bikes, small boogie boards, carts, coolers, beach mats and beach chairs.
- There is a curling iron and hair dryer.
- Internet access and cable TV.
- Check the dates of all condiments/spices before using. We found many outdated items, including one from 2008.
- The pictures from their website are accurate.
- Bikes – we took the bikes all over the island
- Located in a quiet area
- Owners were very quick to respond and fix a flat tire on a bike
- The house was very clean
Overall we had a fantastic time, the rental was clean, private and a short walk to the beach and dining. We would have preferred a king size bed, aside from that no complaints. The lanai and court yard are private and very nice. We would definately recommend this property to friends and family.
We really enjoyed our 3 day stay at Heron's Nest. It didn't matter that the weather wasn't conducive to beach enjoyment because the accommodations were perfect. The private jacuzzi that was available to our unit was the "icing on the cake". The property was very clean and the availability of everything you need from beach equipment, (2) bikes for personal usage, restaurant guides/recommendations, and a well stocked kitchen made the trip one to remember. Highly recommend to friends, family and strangers for a romantic or just plain quiet getaway.
