The Toucan Stay Inn (but 3 can't)...(a/k/a 'TSI')
The 'Owner's Cabin' is not always Rentable, but when the owner travels, it might be. It is a separate building from the actual B&B known as the Toucan Stay Inn (TSI) Our 'Petite B&B in a Garden by the Sea' is Very Private, Gated and Surrounded with colorful 10 foot tall Hibiscus hedges. Besides being on a gorgeous tropical setting, filled with flowers, coconut palms, bananas, papapaya and other tropical foliage...the TSI is proud to be the newest B&B property closest to the beach. WE HAVE AIR CONDITIONING which is really uncommon...but sometimes 'happy to have'.. A/C is also available in the INN's all accommodations.
The Owner's Cabin has Cathedral Ceilings, a variety of Local Wood Accents and Furniture, a Custom Made California King Sized Bed, a Living Room area, Dining Table, Fully Equipped Kitchen, Satellite TV/Stereo DVD, Flat Screened TV, Screened in Patio with Table and Chairs, 2 hammocks and a massage table. (see photos)
The Toucan Stay Inn (TSI) is merely steps away from Playa Punta Uva... rated one of the 'Top 10 Natural Beaches in the World' (says Outsider Magazine). Punta means 'Point'...and there are two sides to it. Each side is completely different. Our side is called the 'family beach'...it has been awarded a BLUE FLAG for it's cleanliness and safety. The other side is completely different, and my wife and I love to hang hammocks among the palm trees, bring a cooler with lunch and drinks, books and snorkeling gear...and spend the day. Muy Tranquilo!!! (Very Tranquil!!!)
The Toucan Stay Inn is conveniently located within a 'stone's throw' of a grocery store, a beach bar/restaurant, and the Punta Uva Dive Center...and as a matter of fact, Punta Uva River...a very sleepy river that meets the Caribbean. Kayaks are rented nearby for your convenience.
FREE WiFi is available, along with Free use of Snorkeling equipment, Boogie Boards, Travel Beach Hommocks and Beach Towels, we are happy to offer concierge services for reservations and suggestions for adventures, tours and our list of 'preferred' dining experiences.
Here are some of the popular things our guests enjoy:
Horseback Riding on the Beach, Scuba Diving, Canopy Tours (zip line), White Water Rafting, Snorkeling, Kayaking, Hiking both the Gondoca-Manzanillo Refuge and the Cahuita National Park, Chocolate Tours, Bri Bri Indian Reservation, Waterfalls, the famous Jaguar Wildlife Rescue Center, etc. etc. Several of the tours will pick you up and drop you off right at our doorstep.
I'm not sure if the Garden of Eden was much better, but instead of apples and serpents, we have coconuts, papayas, bananas and an occasional sloth and toucan.
Although the 'Owner's Cabin' has a fully equipped kitchen, Breakfast can be purchased and served on the Inn's Garden Terrace (with advanced notice)
Garden Terrace and the Garden Pavilion are places where our guests can relax, play cards, board games, or just read or leisurely nap in one of our several terrace hammocks or Adirondack Chairs. We have a small book and DVD library for your use. Wi Fi is Free. And, we have a house computer for you to check you emails.
Caribe Sur (this Southern Caribbean area) is known for the best variety of International Cuisine in Costa Rica. Within a few miles (or less) in either direction, you can find authentic assortment of Caribbean, Argentinean, Middle Eastern, Italian, Thai, Sushi, Mexican and 'Tico' (Costa Rican) menus. We have our favorites that we will share with you.
Have you ever heard of Howler Monkeys? Well, they come around quite often, or you can hear them in the distance...or in our backyard...they travel daily. The variety of colorful birds and wild flowers is incredible...and you will, undoubtedly, see a Morpho Butterfly with turquoise wings and much more!!!
For convenience the bus stop is right on our corner...and taxi rides into Puerto Viejo (our hub) or Manzanillo are about $10. .
There are SPAS within a few miles. Many of our guests enjoy having us arrange Spa personnel come and offer massages on our own property!
Our Mission is to assist you in making your vacation a 'memorable one' (that's if you'll let us).

I recently retired from the 'fashion industry'. I've toured Costa Rica since 1999, but truly fell in love with this area. Don't tell everyone about it, please. My Spanish is not that good yet (really horrible, in fact) but the Caribbean Coast has more English speaking population than the rest of the country...much due to Jamaican influence...so a mixture of Raggae, Salsa, Calypso, along with good old Rock N Roll is the music fare.
I couldn't have found a better location to retire. I walk down the path to the beach each morning, with a cup of the best coffee in the world, and end my day with a swim...then float on my back and watch sky change colors during the incredible sun set. I walk back to my cottage, pick a lime off one of my many fruit trees, then squeeze it into a tall glass of Flora De Cana (Rum) and Diet Coke. I love to walk...and the road to Manzanillo is just gorgeous. Snorkeling the Cove and kayaking either the 'point' (punta) or the sleepy river that meets the beach are two favorite activities.
The nightlife in Puerto Viejo (7 miles away) is nice to have, but the privacy, fresh air and total 'comfy' feeling of the Toucan Stay Inn (but 3 can't) is one of the greatest 'pleasures' of my life.
Jon Stierwalt purchased this cabin in 2006
In my eyes, The Garden of Eden couldn't have been much better. The natural beauty of not just my property, but the entire area is overwhelming to me. On the property we have limes, coconuts, pipas, guanabana, bananas and other fruits growing..along with some incredible flowering plants. The place is surrounded by hibiscus hedges...and 3 sets of wooden entry gates. Two one bedroom air conditioned suites are also available.
The variety of SOME OF THE BEST FOOD I'VE EVER EATEN is incredible, with several of them within walking distance and others within a mile...or no further than 5 miles away...all on the same main road. Sushi, Thai, Italian, French, Caribbean, Middle Eastern, Argentinian, and of course, Tico (local) food are all offered. I keep a book listing TSI's recommended restaurants, along with menus. A convenience store (PULPERIA) is located within 50 feet of our front door. Now that's convenient! The owners, Saskia and Connie speaks German, English and Spanish. They are both great people who will fix you up with beer, wine, booze and your grocery needs.
'If you are lucky enough to live near the beach, you are lucky enough'
'Location, location, location' is the most prominent phrase in real estate and that's what makes The Toucan Stay Inn (but 3 can't) special'
Location: 200 meters (3 lots away) from the actual Punta Uva Beach. 'One of the Top Ten Wild Beaches in the World'...Outsider Magazine 2001
Privacy: Property is surrounded with fencing covered by natures beauty (hibiscus hedges, vines, coconut and pipa trees etc.
Air Conditioning and Ceiling Fans... something hard to find...and no need for mosquito nets. All windows are screened.
Hot Water: Something you might take for granted, but not offered everywhere
'Gringo' plumbing: Flush your toilet paper!(sounds wierd? see Hot Water above)
Great Mattress: King or Queen Top of the line mattresses ONLY!
All the comforts of home: Cabin has full COMPLETE kitchen (Gas oven w/ 4 burner stove, full sized refridge, microwave, toaster over))
Location, privacy, air conditioning, hot water, a great mattress, and the comforts of home in a local setting is what makes the TOUCAN STAY INN (but 3 can't) special'.
A very comfortable place to stay and explore the local area. Great service from the manager Mike, who had a wealth of knowledge about local services and amenities, as well as the geography of the area. Thoroughly recommended!
The unit we stayed in was very nice with all convenience of home. Everyone ( Manager) was more than helpful. Very safe area. If you like something different. this is it. Very restful, nice beach. Walk to 3 restaurants. ( Limited food.) Convenience store 500 feet away has everything!
We spent eight fantastic days at The Toucan Stay Inn in September, 2011. The cabin was very comfortable and we enjoyed breakfast every morning on the patio overlooking the lovely landscaped garden. The beautiful Punta Uva beach was only a 2 minute walk down the lane. The bus stop is just at the corner of Toucan Stay Inn property and there is a small store just across the street. We could hear the howler monkeys and were able to spot them in the trees just down the road.
Owners Jon and Mabel were delightful, as well as Wendy, the manager. They were all so helpful with directions, site seeing, etc. It was a vacation of a life time. Thanks so much.
We began our honeymoon in the southern caribbean at the Toucan Stay and our only regret was that we didn't spend more of our vacation there. The area is as pristine as anywhere in the country and the restaurants were excellent (and very fairly priced)! We couldn't have asked for more accommodating hosts and personal service. I think we saw more monkeys and sloths within a hundred yards of the place than we did for the next week of traveling combined. Thanks again to Jon, Wendy, and Cristobal for taking good care of us.
This place is great! Convenient to the beach and great privacy. Close to awesome restaurants as well. Caretakers are helpful and really fun to chat with. Highly suggest it!!
A few days ago we had stayed 3 nights at the Toucan Stay Inn. My wife and I really enjoyed our stay there. The hosts Wendy and Cristobal catered to our every needs and made our stay most comfortable. We are vegan and Wendy made us vegan meals for breakfast and baked vegan banana bread for us. They had everything you needed to enjoy the area including free internet on their laptop. Beach towels, float, snorkel gear, coolers, boogie boards, and bicycles all for the guests to use. It is a small and intimate place great for couples. There was only one other couple staying there at the same time and we enjoyed there company as well as our hosts. The air conditioning was refreshing and they had a number of DVD's to watch on a rainy day. The property is all fenced in and there is parking for your car behind the locked gate. The beach which is quite nice and clear and great for swimming is a three minute walk from behind the Inn. Most beaches in Costa Rica are rough and therefore not great for visability for snorkeling. However here in Punta Uva the visability on the day I snorkeled was about 50 feet. There were some nice coral and quite the number of fish to see. Nothing like the Florida Keys but but very good for Costa Rica. Lots of wildlife in the area, especially the howler monkeys. Overall a great value and a pleasurable experience.
