If you need to be in Bologna either for business of leisure (or both), you should definitely pick The Berries as the place to stay. It is a clean, cozy, very quiet, typical 1920’s Bolognese family house gifted with a great atmosphere and located in a popular and safe, convenient and colorful neighborhood only about 18-19 minutes from Piazza Maggiore, the very heart of Bologna.

About 12-13 minutes to the Fiera District, the University, the Opera House and all the major spots in town, no more than 20 minutes to the train station, this rental comfortably sleeps a total of six in two bedrooms upstairs (master bedroom: 1 queen size bed + 2 twins with pull-out bed in bedroom #2) and one bedroom in a very nice den (1 twin bed).

A word from Margery...: -- Our family with 3 adults and 2 children (13 and 15) spent 2 weeks in Bologna staying in The Berries. We really enjoyed our stay and found it a very convenient location. As we live in a rural area, dependent on the car, we decided on a city based holiday as a change and it worked very well. The apartment is in a quiet street so there is very little traffic noise but main roads with shops and buses are at either end. The owner was there to meet us and showed us how everything worked. Even though we had only a little Italian and he didn’t have English, we managed to communicate! The place was very clean and the apartment building and courtyard were well kept. The main living area /kitchen is fairly small but the bedrooms are quite spacious and airy. Our 15 year old son liked his bedroom in the basement which was nice and cool even when the weather got warm.

The courtyard area, partly shaded with trees, was nice for sitting out in the cooler mornings or evenings and was big enough for children to play in. Locally there is a market open every day except Sunday where we bought lovely fresh fruit, fish, cheese etc. The stall holders got to know us and we felt at home very quickly – much nicer than an impersonal supermarket! Very near was a café/bar where we stopped on the way to or from the market for a coffee and a chat with the owner. There was a public swimming pool about 10 min walk away for cooling off when it got too hot. We found Bologna an excellent base for a holiday. It is a beautiful old city with historic buildings around every corner but not full of tourists. The tourist office is very helpful and were able to answer all our queries, even providing a bus route map which was invaluable. (Margery G.)

My six month stay

If you want to feel like an Italian when you are on vacation, Bologna in Emilia Romagna is the area and “the Berries” apartment is the place to stay. The Berries is located in a wonderful, safe, convenient neighborhood just 10- 15 minutes by bus to the city center or an easy 30 minute walk to the Santo Stefano Gate. Two Blocks from the apartment you can catch the #36 Bus that takes you directly to the train station. This makes Florence, Venice, Rome and the hill towns of Tuscany an easy train trip.

You can shop each day for your fresh dinner at the many local family run shops or dine at the neighborhood Pizzeria or Restaurants. The apartment is well supplied with the basics and great for singles (because of the safety) families (because of activities close by) and 2 couples (because you have great space in the apartment).

Come to “the Berries in Bologna” and enjoy an Italian Vacation that you never dreamed possible. There is fresh everything at your door step: pasta, fruits, vegetables, meats, fish and, of course, great Italian wines and cheese.

My partner and I stayed at The Berries for 11 weeks during an autumn sabbatical at the University of Bologna. The apartment was clean and tidy, very convenient to amenities including the nearby market, supermarket and several good bus routes, and our hosts were inobtrusive but very responsive to any small problems we had.
The neighbourhood is safe and the locals friendly, but people used to living in quiet houses in the middle of the woods will need to adjust to the inevitable noises of living in an apartment building in the middle of an Italian city.
Bologna itself is a fantastic place to base yourself - the city is charming and grows on you quickly, the food is very good, and the rail connections to everywhere excellent. Don't bother with a car is our advice.

Excellent rental, great quality/price ratio

As a Bolognese who moved to the US several years ago and return to Bologna from time to time I found this rental to be one of the best I ever stayed at. It is located in a pretty semi-central area with stores, pizzerias and everything nearby, the center easily reachable in 10 minutes or so by city bus - stop about 100 meters, runs 24 hours a day. The apartment is clean and in excellent conditions, quiet and comfortable, ideal for a small group or a family. The kitchen is fairly well equipped so making eating at home a real good and easy option if you don't feel like going out. The owners are wonderful hosts, helpful and friendly. My wife and I spent a great week there and will definitely return.

This is a great apartment for the traveler who needs a home base.
Conveniently located in a lovely neighborhood, well stocked, clean and centrally located.
The bus to town is right around the corner as is a market, a shop for bread and another for espresso and restaurants are within walking distance.
The neighborhood is safe, Sebastiano is great with returning emails and it has a washing machine and a clothesline!!
I would recommend it for the "unfussy" traveler!
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Tourists without a Car, Sightseeing, Families with Teenagers

My husband two children and I stayed at The Berries for a week and found it to be a very nice basic apartment in a non-touristy part of town. It is convenient to get to the dowtown area and the train station as there are bus lines close by. There is also a supermarket around the corner, and a terrific cafe just up the street. After our second visit, the owner (Marra) made us feel like family. This house is well equipped from kitchen utensils to plenty of soaps/detergents. The washing machine and clothesline are a godsend with a family. Guiseppe met us a planned and provided us with local maps, directions, etc. I would highly recommend staying.
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Tourists without a Car, Sightseeing, Families with Teenagers, Families with Young Children
