About Marilly Morton

Fred, as a teacher, is a life time learner. His passion is reading and sports. Marilly has a passion for family, birds, photography and traveling, visiting Nicaragua, The Netherlands, Germany & Italy. We both visited Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, Switzerland, Aruba, Vancouver Island & Victoria BC, and Fred managed a sailing trip to Belize with our oldest son.

To keep the international flavor in our home, we hosted exchange students including: two German, two Japanese, two Koreans, and one Colombian.

Besides our four vacation rentals, we own 2 Subway stores (in Portland, OR).

Marilly Morton purchased this lodge in 2008

Why Marilly Morton chose Packwood

We love the mountains, and Packwood is very like Switzerland, only the mountains are smaller and farther apart. It is in the center of Gifford Pinchot Nat'l Forest, 7 miles from the southern entrance to Mt. Rainier Nat'l Park, and surround by Tatoosh, William O Douglass, and Goat Rocks Wilderness areas. There is a constant flow of wildlife including: elk, coyotes, raccoon, fox, black bear, bald eagles, beaver and more, and year round recreational activities.

What makes this lodge unique

I enjoy being outside in the hot tub under a star studded sky with wood smoke on the wind from the fire pit while elk pass by, what a combination! Throwing snowballs from the hot tub in the midst of winter made for a great memory and photo shoot. Indoors offers every comfort from home and even more with a far infrared sauna to soothe tired muscles. I never tire of watching the many faces of Mt. Rainier or the elk and birds at the Lodge. It's a great place for dreaming!

Guestbook comments from the owner

HI there,

Just wanted to say a BIG THANKS for a wonderful weekend with our entire family!! The place was in tip-top condition and more than we were expecting. The place was perfect for us with sleeping, eating (love the BIG table), relaxing...the view and weather couldn't have been better!!

We went on day hikes in the area, found our church services in Morton for Sunday (we are Mormon) and appreciated your generous hospitality to open such a lovely home for us to enjoy together.

We loved the campfires at night and visiting around them. It was nice to have all 6 of our children gathered around the campfire and enjoy conversations and look into all their faces...truly a beautiful sight!!

Anyway, I don't know if you get to hear from your renters, but we absolutely LOVED our time there and say THANKS for having us!!

Mountain View

Everything was beyond our expectations and well equipped for a diverse range of people. Skiers will especially love the mud room and boot dryers. Hikers will love the national forest that borders the property. Families with young children will like that there is sufficient means to baby proof the home. I would recommend this property to friends and colleagues.

Owner's Response: Dear CB, We are delighted you found Rainier View Lodge to exceed expectations. We tried to make it a "home away from home". The property immediately behind the lodge is not part of the national park. It was forest service land, vacant and abandoned for many years, but purchased in 2008. No worries though, there is a section of property that belongs to us up Begonia Lane where guests can walk and enjoy Hall Creek AND there really are tons of hiking trails nearby. Thank you for taking time to review the lodge and recommending it to others.

Great family getaway spot

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for sharing your beautiful cabin with us. It exceeded our expectations and was even more beautiful that the pictures on your site. Everyone in our family felt welcomed and comfortable including our 2 year old grandson. The crib, toys and teddy bears are a very nice addition. The hot tub (even though the weather was rainy) and sauna were such a treat. We loved being able to go on walks around the area and see the elk that visited in the field. The cabin was impeccably clean and the treats the housekeeper left to welcome us were enjoyed by all. Our main reason for coming to the area was to ski and sled at White Pass, but we loved your place so much that I think we will have to return during the summer to hike and enjoy Mt Rainier.

Owner's Response: Dear P & M, It was our pleasure sharing the Rainier View Lodge with your family. Thank you for your review and 5 star rating. It is our intent to make RVL as much like home as possible. Adult and child, domestic and foreign have enjoyed those teddy bears. So glad you found the lodge impeccably clean and more than one reason to enjoy your trip, we hope to serve you again in the future. I’m sorry Mother Nature wasn’t more cooperative, but a summer will be just the thing to show all the things the area has to offer.

Family ski trip

Your home is beautiful, very well appointed, and exceptionally well laid out. While the skiing was"damp" this weekend, we all had a wonderful time and enjoyed the football game in your comfy great room. We would all recommend your home to anyone looking to enjoy the Mt. Rainier/White Pass area.

Excellent Accomodations

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for sharing your beautiful property with us. Our family of 5 rented RVL for a weekend of skiing at White Pass. RVL is in a perfect location for getting to the mountain in under 25 minutes. Great set-up for bringing in the ski equipment without making a mess. We were "home" from skiing and in the hot tub in less than an hour. Perfect way to spend the day.

I agree with the previous reviewer... the knives are really dull. Bring your own if you plan on doing any major cooking. Otherwise, the kitchen is nicely outfitted for whatever you are planning to cook.

I did not realize that the 4th sleeping area was separate from the actual living area, so I felt bad that my son was not able to sleep in the cozy part of the home with us. He ended up sleeping on the couch.

We have rented many homes through VRBO and although this property comes with a lot of instructions to follow, you will appreciate the cleanliness and quality of accommodations. Rentals with fewer rules to follow usually aren't as clean, and well kept. This rental actually feels as if you are staying in a "home", not just a rental property.

Owner's Response: Dear J, Thank you for taking the time to post a VRBO review and giving Rainier View Lodge a 5 star rating. Thank you as well for your earlier personal note, "Hi Marilly, Thank you for the wonderful stay in Packwood. I miss the view already! I am a little confused about the refund. I see the $300 refund notated below, but I am not sure how the money is transferred. Are you sending a check or am I missing a link of some sort? Thanks for your help with this. J" I trust you received your security deposit without incident. In your review, you wrote, "I did not realize that the 4th sleeping area was separate from the actual living area, so I felt bad that my son was not able to sleep in the cozy part of the home with us. He ended up sleeping on the couch." I'm very sensitive about an over-promote "pig in a poke" scenario (something bought or sold without the buyer knowing its true nature or value), and because I could not remember how you found us, and I know I read property reviews when we rent vacation rentals, I revisited our personal website, multiple albums on our Beautiful Northwest Lodging Facebook page, and every referring site we are connected to, and in every case but one, found the language "downstairs" when referring to the bonus room, and in that case, I corrected it. When we promote the lodge, it is listed as a 3 bdrm or 3+ bedroom and refer to that sleeping space as a "bonus" room vs a bedroom, as it is on the lower level, with a set of stairs between it and the closest bathroom. Having said that, it is a very comfortable "day-light" room with legal egress window, and its own heat vent. When the heat goes off for the evening, it does get colder down there, so we have provided a nice space heater to keep it cozy. I have slept on our 8 ft., leather couches and when my son visits, he "chooses" to sleep on them even when a bed is available, so other than the amount of light coming into the window, your son should have been more than comfortable. In closing, my husband and I just went online and educated ourselves on the proper procedure for sharpening serrated blade knives. We will be putting that information into practice, so for the guests arriving after this post . . . take care.

Excellent review

  • 5 of 5

My stay at RVL was wonderful. Since Peter's Inn restaurant is closed, I cooked in the kitchen. Knives for cutting meat/veggies could be replaced. They're quite dull. The middle of the couch, facing the view appreares to have the springs shot, it sits very low, and sinks down. It's difficult for visitors that may have back issues to get stand up.

Other than those 2 things it was great.

Thank You ♥

Owner's Response: Dear A, Thank you for taking the time to write a review, giving us 5 stars and saying you had a wonderful stay. As you have been with us at least 4, if not 5 times, I’m thrilled those pesky knives don’t keep you away. From thekitchen.com : “Knives should never go in the dishwasher. Dishwasher detergent is very abrasive, and along with the banging around that happens during a wash cycle, will take the sharp edge right off your knife. (Plus, it's not safe for the person unloading the dishwasher!)” “Always wash knives by hand in the sink with dish soap and water. Keep the blade facing away from you and the knife low in the sink. Also, don't leave your knife to air dry. Instead, take a tea towel and, holding the knife with the blade facing away from you, dry the knife in short vertical motions perpendicular to the edge. Running a tea towel horizontally along the blade is very dangerous, and a sure-fire way to cut yourself.” As you see, maintaining a really sharp blade is tricky business. The above is just one of 3 ways to keep a blade sharp, and most guests in a new environment are unaware or unwilling to do so, and it seems unreasonable to ask. It may be you bring one from home on your next visit . . . being careful to take it home again. You are the first to say anything about the springs, so we will check that out. Fortunately, there is ample seating to avoid that spot, including 2 club chairs (1 leather, 1 fabric), a rocking recliner, as well as those 2 – 8 ft. long couches. As always, it was a pleasure hosting you. We hope to see you again next year.

What a blessing to stay in such a beautiful home.

  • 5 of 5

Marilly was delightful to work with via email and phone. Our family of 3 couples enjoyed relaxing in this comfortable home. The woodwork inside was stunning. We appreciated the special faucets and lighting fixtures. The outside scenery was amazing. How special to take a walk out the back door to see the brook and waterfall. The location was perfect for us to visit both Mt Rainier and Mt Saint Helen. We enjoyed the Packwood area and seeing herds of Elk. What a special treat for us to get to meet Marilly and Fred in person. We highly recommend a stay at The Rainier View Lodge and would certainly stay here again.

Owner's Response: Dear R & J, The delight went both ways, and yes, it was wonderful to meet in person. You were easy people to please. Our Rainier View Lodge descriptions and photographs are words and pixels on a page and cannot capture the actual experience of our guests. Thank you for taking the time to share yours. Though not truly wheel chair accessible, those with mobility challenges, like your uncle, fare well once they navigate the 4 -5 steps onto the east end of the deck. For all intents and purposes, the lodge is a ranch-style house, with only the bonus room down stairs. The other 3 bedrooms and 2 baths are on the main level with the rest of the house. I do hope you come again. If not, maybe we’ll “hook-up” in Manheim.
