About Marilly Morton

Fred, as a teacher, is a life time learner. His passion is reading and sports. Marilly has a passion for family, birds, photography and traveling, visiting Nicaragua, The Netherlands, Germany & Italy. We both visited Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, Switzerland, Vancouver Island & Victoria BC, and Fred managed a sailing trip to Aruba with our oldest son.

To keep the international flavor in our home, we hosted exchange students including: two German, two Japanese, two Koreans, and one Colombian.

Besides our four vacation rentals, we own 2 Subway stores (in Portland, OR).

Marilly Morton purchased this lodge in 2008

Why Marilly Morton chose Packwood

We love the mountains, and Packwood is very like Switzerland, only the mountains are smaller and farther apart. It is in the center of Gifford Pinchot Nat'l Forest, 7 miles from the southern entrance to Mt. Rainier Nat'l Park, and surround by Tatoosh, William O Douglass, and Goat Rocks Wilderness areas. There is a constant flow of wildlife including: elk, coyotes, raccoon, fox, black bear, bald eagles, beaver and more, and year round recreational activities.

What makes this lodge unique

I enjoy being outside in the hot tub under a star studded sky with wood smoke on the wind from the fire pit while elk pass by, what a combination! Throwing snowballs from the hot tub in the midst of winter makes for a great memory and photo shoot. Indoors offers every comfort from home and even more with a far infrared sauna to soothe tired muscles. I never tire of watching the many faces of Mt. Rainier or the elk and birds at the Lodge. It's a great place for dreaming!

Guestbook comments from the owner

HI there,

Just wanted to say a BIG THANKS for a wonderful weekend with our entire family!! The place was in tip-top condition and more than we were expecting. The place was perfect for us with sleeping, eating (love the BIG table), relaxing...the view and weather couldn't have been better!!

We went on day hikes in the area, found our church services in Morton for Sunday (we are Mormon) and appreciated your generous hospitality to open such a lovely home for us to enjoy together.

We loved the campfires at night and visiting around them. It was nice to have all 6 of our children gathered around the campfire and enjoy conversations and look into all their faces...truly a beautiful sight!!

Anyway, I don't know if you get to hear from your renters, but we absolutely LOVED our time there and say THANKS for having us!!

Excellent review

  • 5 of 5
My stay at RVL was wonderful. Since Peter's Inn restaurant is closed, I cooked in the kitchen. Knives for cutting meat/veggies could be replaced. They're quite dull. The middle of the couch, facing the view appreares to have the springs shot, it sits very low, and sinks down. It's difficult for visitors that may have back issues to get stand up.
Other than those 2 things it was great.
Thank You ♥

Owner's Response: Dear A,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review, giving us 5 stars and saying you had a wonderful stay. As you have been with us at least 4, if not 5 times, I’m thrilled those pesky knives don’t keep you away.

From thekitchen.com : “Knives should never go in the dishwasher. Dishwasher detergent is very abrasive, and along with the banging around that happens during a wash cycle, will take the sharp edge right off your knife. (Plus, it's not safe for the person unloading the dishwasher!)”

“Always wash knives by hand in the sink with dish soap and water. Keep the blade facing away from you and the knife low in the sink. Also, don't leave your knife to air dry. Instead, take a tea towel and, holding the knife with the blade facing away from you, dry the knife in short vertical motions perpendicular to the edge. Running a tea towel horizontally along the blade is very dangerous, and a sure-fire way to cut yourself.”

As you see, maintaining a really sharp blade is tricky business. The above is just one of 3 ways to keep a blade sharp, and most guests in a new environment are unaware or unwilling to do so, and it seems unreasonable to ask. It may be you bring one from home on your next visit . . . being careful to take it home again.

You are the first to say anything about the springs, so we will check that out. Fortunately, there is ample seating to avoid that spot, including 2 club chairs (1 leather, 1 fabric), a rocking recliner, as well as those 2 – 8 ft. long couches.

As always, it was a pleasure hosting you. We hope to see you again next year.

What a blessing to stay in such a beautiful home.

  • 5 of 5
Marilly was delightful to work with via email and phone. Our family of 3 couples enjoyed relaxing in this comfortable home. The woodwork inside was stunning. We appreciated the special faucets and lighting fixtures. The outside scenery was amazing. How special to take a walk out the back door to see the brook and waterfall. The location was perfect for us to visit both Mt Rainier and Mt Saint Helen. We enjoyed the Packwood area and seeing herds of Elk. What a special treat for us to get to meet Marilly and Fred in person. We highly recommend a stay at The Rainier View Lodge and would certainly stay here again.

Owner's Response: Dear R & J,

The delight went both ways, and yes, it was wonderful to meet in person. You were easy people to please. Our Rainier View Lodge descriptions and photographs are words and pixels on a page and cannot capture the actual experience of our guests. Thank you for taking the time to share yours.

Though not truly wheel chair accessible, those with mobility challenges, like your uncle, fare well once they navigate the 4 -5 steps onto the east end of the deck. For all intents and purposes, the lodge is a ranch-style house, with only the bonus room down stairs. The other 3 bedrooms and 2 baths are on the main level with the rest of the house.

I do hope you come again. If not, maybe we’ll “hook-up” in Manheim.

One great day

  • 5 of 5
My family loved this house after a day of hiking at Mt. Rainier. It was an easy 15-20 minute car ride south of the Park. Groceries are readily available at a nearby store. The large kitchen is well-equipped. The hot tub was a little confusing but there is a comprehensive binder full of laminated pages of house information that was almost too much to absorb for just a one night stay. It was still worth it (plus a cleaning fee) even for just one night when traveling with a large family to have a place to cook and congregate. We totally enjoyed the beautiful view of the mountain over morning coffee the next day. The house is clean and neat and well-appointed and the owner very considerate in offering us several options when we first inquired.

Owner's Response: Dear J,
So happy the Rainier View Lodge was just what your family needed. A vacation rental can be confusing, even a little intimidating to guests unfamiliar with how they work. Since guests come from both ends of that spectrum: experienced, novice and everything in between, we try to anticipate ALL needs. Not only does the “comprehensive binder” have information on the house, its use and equipment, but we provide information about things to do, places to visit, maps and much, much more. Even those who stay longer than one night remark on its size, some in negative terms others in positive. As not all cell phones work in Packwood, our intention is to prevent frustrating trips to town and expensive pay phone calls. Though the lodge has WIFI, I’m not always at my computer, and we don’t want to leave folks frustrated. That makes communication key. Glad you were able to navigate that “comprehensive” hurdle with stride left in your step. I hope you have the opportunity to visit again and stay a little longer.

Fabulous House

  • 5 of 5
This house is so comfortable, so clean, so well cared for, and the view of Rainier cannot be beat. The kitchen is just outstanding with its HUGE wooden table (room for everyone) and has everything you could possibly want. Gorgeous cabinetry throughout, AC if you wish it, a cute gas fireplace, superior W/D, leather furniture, and from the back deck you can hear a brook rushing through the woods past the property line. The spa is super clean and the firepit is enormous, perfect for a large family. From here we toured both Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helens in one day, though we did get up early. This house would offer convenient accommodations for White Pass ski area as well, if the road conditions permit. Just off the main road, but perfectly private and quiet. There's a pizza place and a market just down the road. We enjoyed our stay.

Owner's Response: Dear L, Thank you for becoming a part of our Rainier View Lodge family. I loved our interactions on the phone, and I'm glad the Lodge and its privacy (yet nearness to town) were just the ticket for your family. Hall Creek (the brook rushing through the woods) does run year round, though at times, slowly. Since your stay was the end of July, it is nice to have documentation that you can hear it from the back deck. Because I got a specific question about Hall Creek, I photographed it the week before you were there. I will have to make a greater effort to post those pictures on our Beautiful Northwest Lodging Facebook page for others to see. You said, "This house would offer convenient accommodations for White Pass ski area as well, if the road conditions permit." State Hwy 12 (White Pass Scenic Byway), is a major artery connecting the I-5 corridor to the eastern side of White Pass Ski Area (Naches, Yakima, etc.), and the state keeps it very well plowed. Because all our houses are just .1 of a mile from Hwy 12, and our road is plowed on the same rotation as downtown, it makes winter access a snap. Though carrying chains is required for White Pass during the winter, most of the time they aren't needed, AND White Pass Ski area is only 17 mi. from Packwood.
From Wikipedia "The base elevation of White Pass is at 4,500 feet (1,370 m) above sea level, with a lift-served summit at 6,500 feet (1,980 m), yielding a vertical drop of 2,000 feet (610 m). Located on the south side of the east-west highway, the slopes primarily face north."
"The mountain has six chairlifts: two high speed quads, a fixed-grip quad, a triple, and two doubles. It also includes two surface lifts: a platter lift and a magic carpet for beginning skiers. There is a terrain park that regularly features rail jams, slopestyle, and the like."
"The Nordic Center provides access to a variety of groomed, double-tracked cross-country ski trails in the Wenatchee and Gifford Pinchot National Forests. The terrain challenges all ability levels in classic cross-county, skating cross-country, and snowshoeing on 18 km (11 mi) of trails."
From Visit Rainier, "The new lodge in the basin (built during the expansion project of 2010-2011) is appropriately named High Camp and is accessible by trails from both new chairlifts. Its location makes it possible to spend the entire day at Paradise Basin; no longer necessary now to return to the base to warm up or get a bite-to-eat." So SKI WHITE PASS!!!!

Rainier in your face

  • 5 of 5
I had a wonderful stay at the Rainier View Lodge. Everything seen on the website was exact! On a clear day Mt. Rainier is right there in the living room with you. If you are on the deck you hear the waterfall, and can follow the trail to it, not far from the back door. I can't say enough about it. It is a beautiful home with all the amenities one could ask for.

Mt. Rainier in Your Living Room

We loved the Cabin was amazing very much like a home. The rooms were great all with a view. Loved the kitchen and living room area. The view was to die for, Mt Rainier directly out all the windows was fantastic. Although we did not have time to use the sauna, hot tub or fire pit they were available. Walking distance to town great location. Marilly was wonderful to work with. We highly recommend it.

Owner's Response: Dear T., It is easy to be a gracious host, when you start with awesome guests, and you were! Thank you for becoming part of our "family". We hope you will come again and get an opportunity to use the indoor sauna (far infra-red), outdoor hot tub and fire pit. You didn't mention if you saw elk. It seldom happens that a guest DOESN'T see elk, and I hope you weren't one of them. Fortunately Rainier View Lodge and the surrounding area have other things to offer. Hope your reunion was a blast!
