This lovely 800-square foot apartment is on the granite shores of the Salt Pond, a four-mile long saltwater cove opening on Blue Hill Bay and home to bald eagles, seals, osprey, kingfishers, and a myriad of aquatic birds. It's a great place for kayaking or just sitting on the shore with a good book. The apartment, on a very quiet five acres with panoramic water views, is a cozy place to hang out. There are some nice walks and bike rides nearby, or drive four miles to the village where you'll find several great restaurants, galleries, quality shops, an bookstores, a wonderful library and a supermarket.
For a terrific view of the coast, from the mountains of Acadia to the islands of Penobscot Bay, take one of the trails up Blue Hill Mountain, just a few minutes from the village. Besides the world famous Wooden Boat School in neighboring Brooklin and The Haystack Mountain School on Deer Isle there are almost endless opportunities for education and activity on the Blue Hill Peninsula. You might want to participate in an oil or pastel class with award-winning artist Carolyn Caldwell - (check her website under her name plus dot com.) And if chamber music is to your liking, you won't want to miss one of the weekly chamber music concerts at Kneisel Hall where for over 100 years they have educated young classical music students as well as offering concerts by renowned performers, including members of the Julliard String Quartet.
Acadia National Park is just beautiful beyond description and only a short drive away. Hike dozens of mountain trails, bike the well-maintained carriage roads, spend the day at Sand Beach, drive to the summit of Cadillac Mountain and watch the sun rise or set. Watch one of the 100-plus cruise ships come into Bar Harbor. The town is loaded with restaurants, shopping, nature cruises and other diversions.
For those of you drawn to the watery side of the coast of Maine, Blue Hill sits in the middle of what some consider the finest sailing grounds in the world. The rugged coast, with innumerable islands, coves, bays and harbors, is a paradise for kayakers and those who want to spend a half day or several days aboard an old schooner seeing Maine as Verrazano and Champlain did.
Know that your hosts want you to have an excellent vacation, and Maine is full of people and places to ensure that you do.
Keywords: 'Home Away from Home'
We purchased our land in 1997 and pitched our tent on the shore weekends when we came to Blue Hill until we started building in 2001. We are consummate travelers as well so we know what makes for a comfortable 'home away from home.' And, we also love living where we do. We find the ocean relaxing and beautiful - watching the bald eagles fly by, listening for the osprey, kingfishers, and terns, observing seals on the rocks and having them play peek-a-boo with you as you kayak the Salt Pond - so much to enjoy - well, come see for yourself. It is a magical place!
Maureen & Steve purchased this apartment in 1997
There is so much beauty all around . . . there is nothing so soothing as sitting on the shore and watching birds, seals, bald eagles and osprey catch a meal, knowing you don't have to work that hard - you just have to choose which one of the great local restaurants where you will enjoy your next meal.
Kayaks are available for your use here on the Salt Pond - paddle in the early morning and find yourself in the midst of seals sunning themselves or bald eagles hunting for breakfast for their young chicks.
Steve & Maureen - Our stay in your beautiful, super clean apartment was wonderful. We thank you for sharing it with us. We thank you for giving us the perfect amount of privacy. We feel fortunate to have spent a week in such a place. Thanks, too, for the advice on places to see and go. The wine is our treat to you from California.
My partner and I stayed at the Garaj Mahal for a few days and had an amazing time! Steve and Maureen were excellent hosts, very responsive, attentive, and completely respectful of our privacy. The apartment itself was clean, welcoming, and cozy, with a stocked kitchen, lots of warm lighting, and great views from every window. We arrived during a stormy patch and enjoyed nestling in to do a little work. We have could stayed in for the whole vacation and still had a great time. The house was also a great launching point to visit Acadia. On our last morning, we took the kayak out onto Salt Pond and followed some seals past the nearby island. We sang to them and they came showed interest in us before continuing on their way. It was all a truly enchanting experience.
We loved our stay here. The Garaj Mahal on Salt Pond was perfect in every way! The location cannot be beat -- near to so many places for hiking, birding, paddling, sightseeing; near enough to Acadia to enjoy all it has to offer but far away from all of the hustle and bustle. The apartment itself was immaculately maintained and well appointed. Cozy and comfortable, it made for a lovely home away from home. Steve and Maureen were gracious and accommodating hosts who made us feel welcome and offered excellent suggestions for places to see and things to do. One of our favorite ever VRBO rentals. We would love to return!
The setting, at the end of a peninsula on Salt Pond, with over 1000 feet of water frontage, was beautiful and serene, very private and quiet. We especially liked driving in on the long driveway from the public road to the Garaj Mahal at the end of a long day of hiking and sightseeing in Acadia NP, just a short drive away, and sitting in the lawn chairs overlooking Salt Pond as the sun went down behind us. The apartment was airy and cozy, equipped with everything we needed to cook or relax. The bed was comfortable. We loved waking up to the cool mornings, lighting a fire in the stove (easy to operate and very efficient), making coffee and cooking breakfast. Steve and Maureen are great hosts and very knowledgeable about things to do and places to visit and eat. I can't recommend this place highly enough. Spectacular in every way.
We can only echo everyone else's review. We had a terrific week at Garaj Mahal. The quietness, the convenience and the cleanliness exceeded our expectations. All we needed to do was relax. We especially enjoyed morning kayak paddles and watching the eagles and loons. Steve and Maureen are great hosts. Thank you!
Just back to Pa. from a week at The Garaj Mahal and what a great stay we had! What
a wonderful property and location, everything well maintained and clean and well appointed.
A home away from home with very gracious and helpful owners. A great time at a GREAT PLACE!
This is an ideal vacation property in the heart of the most beautiful part of Maine - the Blue Hill peninsula. Maureen and Steve are gracious hosts who have gone the extra mile to provide everything you could possibly need. They provide the guidebooks, maps, brochures and local papers you need to plan excursions and their recommendations for what to do are spot on. They are always available and friendly, yet give their guests complete privacy. It really does feel like home.
The studio apartment is spacious and fully equipped. There are windows on three sides looking out on meadows and flower gardens. Salt Pond is visible through the trees on the other side of the lawn. Our favorite thing was to take mugs of coffee and binoculars down to the water in the morning where there are two chairs positioned so you can watch the seals play and the birds hunt for food in the salt-water pond. We saw bald eagles, herons, ducks, kingfishers, and osprey.
One notable aspect of the apartment is its cleanliness. Every surface is spotless. When you open a window, the ledges inside the screen are pristine - not a speck of dust or a fly in sight. The dishes, cutlery and appliances gleam. The walls look like they were painted yesterday. The dish sponge was new. If you like clean, airy and spacious surroundings, you are going to be very happy here.
The Wooden Boat School in Brooklin is 20 minutes away, Acadia National Park is less than an hour, dozens of art galleries, jewelers, potters, The Stonington Opera House and The Grand in Ellsworth both show movies and have live productions. Local theater groups perform throughout the summer, street dances with an award-winning steel band, Kneisel Hall is one of the greatest summer features in Blue Hill - world class musicians perform in a very intimate setting and the annual Blue Hill Fair held on Labor Day weekend. There is so much to do you'll need a vacation from your vacation!
