THE GARAJ MAHAL ON THE SALT POND

Blue Hill Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Apartment, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

This lovely 800-square foot apartment is on the granite shores of the Salt Pond, a four-mile long saltwater cove opening on Blue Hill Bay and home to bald eagles, seals, osprey, kingfishers, and a myriad of aquatic birds. It's a great place for kayaking or just sitting on the shore with a good book. The apartment, on a very quiet five acres with panoramic water views, is a cozy place to hang out. There are some nice walks and bike rides nearby, or drive four miles to the village where you'll find several great restaurants, galleries, quality shops, an bookstores, a wonderful library and a supermarket.

For a terrific view of the coast, from the mountains of Acadia to the islands of Penobscot Bay, take one of the trails up Blue Hill Mountain, just a few minutes from the village. Besides the world famous Wooden Boat School in neighboring Brooklin and The Haystack Mountain School on Deer Isle there are almost endless opportunities for education and activity on the Blue Hill Peninsula. You might want to participate in an oil or pastel class with award-winning artist Carolyn Caldwell - (check her website under her name plus dot com.) And if chamber music is to your liking, you won't want to miss one of the weekly chamber music concerts at Kneisel Hall where for over 100 years they have educated young classical music students as well as offering concerts by renowned performers, including members of the Julliard String Quartet.

Acadia National Park is just beautiful beyond description and only a short drive away. Hike dozens of mountain trails, bike the well-maintained carriage roads, spend the day at Sand Beach, drive to the summit of Cadillac Mountain and watch the sun rise or set. Watch one of the 100-plus cruise ships come into Bar Harbor. The town is loaded with restaurants, shopping, nature cruises and other diversions.

For those of you drawn to the watery side of the coast of Maine, Blue Hill sits in the middle of what some consider the finest sailing grounds in the world. The rugged coast, with innumerable islands, coves, bays and harbors, is a paradise for kayakers and those who want to spend a half day or several days aboard an old schooner seeing Maine as Verrazano and Champlain did.

Know that your hosts want you to have an excellent vacation, and Maine is full of people and places to ensure that you do.

Guestbook comments from the owner
Steve & Maureen - Our stay in your beautiful, super clean apartment was wonderful. We thank you for sharing it with us. We thank you for giving us the perfect amount of privacy. We feel fortunate to have spent a week in such a place. Thanks, too, for the advice on places to see and go. The wine is our treat to you from California.

We love to travel so we know what makes for a comfortable 'home away from home.' And, we also love living where we do. We find the ocean so relaxing and beautiful - watching the bald eagles fly by, listening for the osprey, kingfishers, and terns, observing seals on the rocks and having them play peek-a-boo with you as you kayak the Salt Pond - well, come see for yourself. It is a magical place!

There is so much beauty all around . . .

Kayaks are available for your use here on the Salt Pond - paddle in the early morning and find yourself in the midst of seals sunning themselves or bald eagles hunting for breakfast for their young chicks.

AMAZING STAY!

  • 5 of 5
The Garaj Mahal was the perfect getaway. The pictures do not do it justice! My boyfriend and I stayed only 3 nights but wish we could have stayed longer! The apartment was clean and so cozy, and Salt Pond is gorgeous. It was so nice to relax outside and take the kayaks out and the apartment is centrally located to other Maine attractions. We had such an amazing break from reality and would come here again in a heartbeat!

PERFECT GETAWAY

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I recently returned home to city life after a serene stay at the Garaj Mahal. It being our first trip to Maine, we took advantage of the many comforts the hosts, Steve and Maureen, offer their guests. These range from a variety of guide books that pointed us to all the right hiking spots on Mount Desert Island to the insightfully stocked kitchen which made cooking away from home simple and stress-free. The cottage itself was clean, cozy, and perfectly New England-exactly what we were hoping for! The location was equally as pleasant, right on the water and as gorgeous as any corner of coastal Maine can be. Our expectations were exceeded!

Owner's Response: It was wonderful to have you visit our little corner of the world and to know you enjoyed your "home away from home" so much. When you need another get-away from the busy city life you lead, we'll be here to welcome you back to the Garaj Mahal!

A WONDERFUL GETAWAY!

  • 5 of 5
Enjoyed a four day stay in Maine with the Garaj Mahal as a welcoming and convenient retreat. Maureen and Steve were great hosts and pointed me to great trails (I highly recommend spending some time walking the Barred Island and Tennis preserve trails on Deer Isle - beautiful even in the rain!) Kayaking on the salt pond was great and having the opportunity to sit in a kayak and watch an eaglet in it's nest with an adult bald eagle nearby in tree was wonderful. The Garaj Mahal itself is well maintained and very comfortable. Thanks for the opportunity for such a relaxing get-away!

PEACEFUL

  • 5 of 5
The Garaj Majal (Mainers do love their puns) is an exquisite place to stay for a couple looking seeking a peaceful Maine vacation. The apartment is meticulously maintained, has views of Salt Pond from the kitchen and the pellet stove makes the room toasty warm on cold nights. We had a lovely stay and can't fathom much more to have asked for in a vacation rental. It is a very special place.

WONDERFUL PLACE TO STAY!!!!!

  • 5 of 5
We were so pleased with our accommodations at the Garaj Mahal!!! Such a cozy apartment with everything we could possibly need! A GREAT home away from home!!! A "Welcome" goodie basket awaited us upon our arrival. So thoughtful!!! Bluehill is a great location to explore Downeast Maine. We made day trips to Deer Isle, Stonington, several trips to Acadia & Barharbor, and over to Schoodic Point which was absolutely breathtaking!!! GREAT grocery store in town as well as some good restaurants! Steve & Maureen were the perfect hosts! We so wanted to take the kayaks or canoe out on the Salt Pond but the weather didn't cooperate when we planned to do it. We could easily have stayed another week.... so much to see and do!!! Thanks again Steve & Maureen for providing the perfect place to stay!!! Hope we can come back again sometime!!!

GARAJ MAHAL- PERFECTION ON THE PENINSULA!

  • 5 of 5
Perfection. Sanctuary. Inviting. Homey. Soothing. Quiet. Comfortable. Warm. Charming. All are descriptors applicable to the Garaj Mahal. Said another way, the Garaj Mahal is a little piece of heaven. The pictures really don't do it justice.

This very special place was built with a lot of love and an eye for details. So many ‘little’ details in fact, there are too many to mention. We’re confident you'll enjoy discovering them for yourself.

Steve and Maureen are gracious hosts – welcome gifts awaited our arrival - and made our stay extremely special. If you have a question or need them, they're there. If you don't, you’ll think you own the entire property. They really thought of everything, and provided all we could have asked for and more.

On our first day we took the kayaks out and paddled with seals, an eagle and blue herons. We couldn't believe all this was just steps from our front door. We found the location on Blue Hill peninsula to be the perfect starting point for all of our day trips. But at the end of each day of exploration, we felt so blessed to have the Garaj Mahal to come home to. Just a warning, you might want to book it for longer than a week. There is so much to see nearby but at the same time you won't want to leave the Garaj Mahal.
