Welcome to mid-coast Maine! You’ll find all kinds of things to do and see – indoors and out.

Canoe the peaceful Penobscot or grab a kayak and tackle some white water. Hike the trails in Acadia National Park or go sailing, kayaking, golfing, hiking, or bicycling. Take a day trip to Camden, Belfast, Castine or Bar Harbor, and spend the afternoon visiting art galleries, craft shops and antique stores. Then, head out to sea for a whale watch, or a tour of Maine’s famous lighthouses. There are also lots of places to golf, fish and go for a horseback ride.

Don’t miss the Rockport Lobster Festival, The American Folk Festival, or the many other local seasonal festivities you’ll only find here in Maine.

When the temperature fall, snowshoe in The Farm’s eight-acre backyard, or ski the slopes at Sugarloaf and Sunday River. You can even take the family on an old-fashioned sleigh ride.

Or… just stay right here and find peaceful restoration in the area’s coastline and open space

History: In 1764, Col. Benjamin Shute purchased 100 acres of Maine land on the magnificent coast of Penobscot Bay. He built a log cabin, and a few years later, added a cape-style ell onto a small nearby home – now The Farm at French’s Point is the oldest wooden structure still standing in Waldo County. Fearing attack during the French and Indian War (1754-1760), the Shute family built an underground escape tunnel leading from the house to the shore. Later, the tunnel was used by slaves traveling the underground railroad from the south to freedom in the north, and then for rum running during prohibition in the 1920s. The Shute family sold the cape to William French in 1814, and he built the colonial section onto what soon came to be known as French House. In 1890, the Universalist Church of Bangor took ownership of French House, using it as a cook house and sleeping accommodations for counselors for the nearby Hersey Retreat. The property was purchased and restored by the Brooks Family in 2002.

An Ideal Property: The Farm at French’s Point, with its breathtaking views of Old Penobscot Bay, unspoiled blueberry fields and surrounding woods – has become an elegant rental estate, attracting families for reunions, retreats, weddings, and holiday gatherings.

Our family's week at the Farm was one of the best experiences we've ever had. What a spectacular facility and location! We can't wait to come back next summer (or any other time we can all arrange it). Thank you for the love you put into the restoration. It was well worth it!
