Great place to stay with friends

  • 5 of 5
Myself and 4 of my friends stayed here for a wedding over Labor Day weekend. The living room area and outdoor patio is perfect for sharing conversation or sitting back with a drink. We all had a place to sleep and the washer/dryer were essential! Highly recommend .

Great Boys Weekend

  • 5 of 5
Took my sons and a couple of friends (6 people) up for the a fishing weekend. We stopped and have a great tour of Shasta Dam on the way up. Upon arrival one of the trains when by, kids and I loved it. I took the downstairs room and sent the kids to the second floor. This workout out well, I had the first floor to myself until the kids started moving. Kids would walk down to the park and fish in the evenings, during the day we visited Burney Falls (WOW!) and Kangaroo Lake. Great weekend.

Dissappointed

  • 1 of 5
Our group of 9 + infant thought this would be such a fun time at this so called "Charming Cottage" overlooking the river. Upon arrival, we weren't even sure we found the house because there was so much over growth of vines and scrubs on the property you couldn't hardly recognized the house. There as a bag of someone else's garbage strewn all over the parking area. Not a nice thing to arrive and see. Then we came to the quick realization that we had to pack 4 cars worth of belongings up 55 steep steps to the front door. We never used the outer deck bc of the mess it was left in and loose deck boards. The living room and dining were in good shape, one barstool leg fell off though, the kitchen was outdated and in much need of remodeling. The electric range burner was bent upwards which you couldn't balance a fry pan on, and the sink needed a good cleaning before we even washed anything. The fridge door didn't close tight either. I felt like everything needed to be cleaned before using. Pots and pans were in horrible shape. The downstairs bathroom shower door leaked and one of the upstairs beds was made up with a torn fitted sheet. The laundry room smelled like dog/cat urine. While we were staying there it was over 100 degrees and it would have been a nice feature to have had air conditioning at least in the downstairs living room area. The one main thing we were thankful for was that the lovely rushing river below, which you really couldn't see that well, drowned out the sound of the overhead freeway noise. NOTHING could drown out the constant train noise going by all day and all night long! I believe I was taken advantage of by misleading discriptions of the rental. I would like to think with the money they made off of us, they would use it to update the place, but I'm sure that's unlikely. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this rental.

Beautiful constant sound of the river, but the sound of trains arghhh!!!

  • 3 of 5
Pretty roomy place in a nice location. Everything you need is provided especially extra towels.

However we couldn't sleep due to the train noise! Every hour at night we heard the screeching and choochooing sounds from the bypassing trains. If I knew the trains pass by so often and make ton of noises, I wouldn't have rent it it the first place.

Nowhere in the description warns us about the trains. Really disappointed to hear the nice river flow sound at night, only to be drown away by the train noises. Don't recommend this place if you have decent to good hearing.

Oh and the toilet seat downstair is pretty rough, carpet is dirty, and the beds squeak a lot (springs are broken I think).

Owner's Response: Thanks for your comments however the beautiful Sacramento River winds through the canyon as well as the train which made Dunsmuir Famous. The town is proud of it railroad history and you can find evidence of that throught the area. We do list on our site that guests will hear the train go by. We apologize for your discomfort.

March Weekend in the Snow

  • 5 of 5
We rented this property for my husband's 60th birthday and invited 3 other couples. We expected warm days and fishing but we were snowed in. Could have been a disaster, but this property is very spread out with lots of privacy for all, and we were comfortable staying "in" all weekend. The kitchen is large and comfortably sits 8 adults; as with the living room. The house is clean and well-maintained. All of the bedrooms are large enough for a couple and most do not share a wall with another bedroom. There are lots of steps so probably not well suited for young children. The train travels by several times per night, but we all found the sound of the train charming, and may of us are light sleepers. Walking distance to town. Fabulous dinner at Madelena's. We had a question for the management over the weekend (needed a shovel for the snow) and they were very attentive and responded quickly to our request. We are all planning to stay here again. Overall, a fabulous weekend.

Great house for

  • 5 of 5
Five adults stayed for three nights with plenty of room to spread out. Well equipped kitchen to cook and serve full meals. Central location for hiking, fishing and exploring the Shasta region. House was clean and inviting. Large deck overlooking the Sacramento River is relaxing setting for morning coffee and afternoon drinks.

Would definitely stay again.
