This elegantly furnished guesthouse is 3 miles behind a privately gated community. It is on the West side of Highway One and is approximately 700 feet above sea level. It commands a 270 degree ocean view from every room.

Tall trees offer total privacy from the main house. It is very private, secure and quiet. The kitchen is fully equipped with 2 beautiful sets of dishes and modern kitchen equipment. You can order massages in or out as we are located about 15 miles from Esalen. There are several excellent restaurants nearby including the famous Nepenthe and Post Ranch Inn.

This is a most private and romantic house. Great for writers, artists or loving souls looking for that very special place to celebrate birthdays, anniveraries or just getting to fall in love kind of place.

I am a Certified Public Accountant in the states of California and Oregon. I am a financial planner and advisor. I have lived in Big Sur 24 years. I have been a Board member of the Henry Miller Library and the Big Sur Chamber of Commerce. I have been President of the Pfeiffer Ridge Mutual Road association for almost 20 years, managing to get the road paved for the first 2.5 miles and an electronic gate. I am also Vice President of the Big Sur Arts Initiative.

Why Jerry Schiff chose Big Sur

Big Sur is one of the most spectacular scenic spots on the entire planet. Mountains drop into the Pacific Ocean. The climate is mediterranean and is sunny and temporate almost all year around. Rare African and Australian plants thrive here and provide exotic flowers all year.

There are a great number of artists living here and always a musical or art program in this small town.

What makes this house unique

I get to look at the Pacific Ocean all year around and can wear jeans and T shirt most of the time. The locals are the most non judgemental people anywhere.

Big Sur is one of the great wonders of the world. Mountains that drop into the Pacific Ocean. Houses are on the sides of these mountains. My particular house is at one end of the private gated road. No other property is like this as there are no noises from autos or otherwise. Very peaceful and romantic. Ocean waves and star gazing are incredible here.

The view of the ocean from across the large open rolling hills was absolutely beautiful. The advertised WiFi connection could only be made from the bedroom. Unfortunately once a connection was established the internet connection was quite slow. The DirecTV receiver was broken when we arrived. We discovered this after spending a few hours troubleshooting this issue including speaking with DirecTV. The gas fireplace failed on two separate occasions, during our 2 night stay. The first time the owner came down to restart it. The second time occurred the last morning of our stay. Therefore we did not bother to call the owner yet again.

In summary, the property was very nice, but fell short of what we expected based on the VRBO Rental Features list. (especially for the price) Jerry was very accommodating and made every effort to help us with each of the issues, but they were unable to be resolved.
Recommended for:  Romantic Getaway
Owner's Response: This was the first and only time we had trouble with the fireplace. I have it checked regularly and it works perfectly. Wifi is best in the bedroom where there is a desk and laptop for visitors. That room faces the T-1 Tower and gets the fastest internet speed. Being privately owned, it is subject to repairs when we have storms. Not very often.
After many years of operation, the DirectV receiver actually was broken. DirectV sent a replacement receiver which is working perfectly.

It was unfortunate that so many glitches occurred at once for this one guest.

We do our best to make sure everything is in top condition and we have fixed everything so that future guests will not have any problems.

Check the review under the Homeaway site and by the very next day all was in order and we received 5 star rating.

Awesome Stay

My wife and I stayed at the end of July, and it was fantastic! Great view, great amenities, very private -- it was just very nice all around. The owner was friendly and responsive, and a pleasure to work with. Getting there requires navigating some fairly twisty roads, of which a significant portion are (sometimes uneven) dirt, so I would not suggest bringing an RV/trailer, nor a car with very little ground clearance.

Owner's Response: The only rough portion on the road is the last 1/4 mile. It is paved for the first 2.5 miles and then becomes a dirt road for the last .8 mile.
My Beemer clears the road and I just slow down near any bumpy portions.

Great view and a charming guest house!

We absolutely loved it here and will come back again the next time we are in Big Sur. The Guest House is very comfortable and cozy, the views are incredible and the feeling of seclusion something that just cannot be described. The long, winding drive up to the property is not for the ‘faint-of-heart’ but well worth the experience. The owner is a lovely person and made us very comfortable. He stocked the kitchen with breakfast items (milk, juice, cereal, butter, etc) so no need to buy those things before you arrive. I do recommend bringing some provisions for dinner as it is such a wonderful view you would not want to pass-up the opportunity for a romantic evening. There are quite a few terrific hikes in the nearby State Parks, after a long day of hiking it is great to sit on the large deck in the sun and enjoy a glass of wine.

Wonderful Getaway Property!

This is one of the most memorable vacation rentals where I have had the privilege to stay. The property is drop dead gorgeous, with an amazing view. It is a relaxing and reviving setting, and no pictures can give you the actual feeling that you get while there. The house is well maintained and well provisioned, and the owner is accessible while respectful of privacy. A true gem and definitely far above the typical rental experience!

An amazing view

We stayed in Feb of 2010, and even in the middle of Winter, the view was amazing, the weather perfect. I cannot say enough good things about this property and the owner.

Anyone staying will probably want to pick up some groceries before arriving. It is several miles to a grocery store, not to mention that once you arrive, you won't want to leave....ever.
