Boothbay Harbor Cottage Rental Photos and Description
3 bedrooms, 2 (3/4) baths, sleeps 6 priv, 4 decks, beach, dock, bay views
Seanook is built on its own rocky point sequestered on the shore of Linekin Bay. It is grandfathered uniquely close to the ocean; the tide comes in around and under it. You can have this rare historic experience of staying over the water, which is like being on a boat except it doesn’t rock. Panoramic windows and 4 decks put you over the water. Watch weather waft across the waves and spectacular sunsets reflected in calm. On a rainy night the pitter-patter on the roof will lull you to sleep. Wake up to the call of seabirds and the lapping of little ripples. The ever-changing moods of the bay will entertain you on 3 sides year-round. See vibrant colors develop along the shore in October. In winter you can be toasty warm by the cozy fire, and watch the ice floats and wildlife on the bay all at once. If you are lucky enough to get snowfall, the views are pristine!
Seanook is a long-time family cottage, now a nearly complete year-round home. Experience this special place while it is available. Wireless internet provided.
A romantic getaway in any season -- you may decide to just sit and watch the play of light and wind on the water. See seagulls, osprey, and an occasional eagle soar. You'll observe a variety of ducks in winter, and perhaps a seal or a beaver in summer. Read a book or sunbathe on the upper deck. Go beach-combing to discover varied creatures that abound along the shore of the Gulf of Maine. Go kayaking if it's calm. Anglers of any age can fish right off the dock. Writers find Seanook a peaceful private retreat where they can work on their manuscripts. Day hikes in one of the many land preserves are a favorite outdoor activity. How about a romantic sail at sunset? Many boat excursions are offered in nearby Boothbay Harbor. Perhaps you would like deep sea fishing. You will also find lighthouse tours, museums, and art studios starting with nearby Paradise Studio.
Some of the best eateries are right here in Boothbay. The East Boothbay General Store has morning paper & coffee, breakfast pizza and gourmet take-out. Live theater has a dramatic presence in Boothbay Harbor with events nightly at the Opera House, including Family Night on Tuesdays. Afternoon tea is a yearly tradition with some of our long time renters. Visit the aquarium in summer, where children's programs and classes enhance the quality of the coastal experience. Take a short boat ride to Burnt Island where costumed guides reenact life of a lighthouse keeper's family in 1950. Go antiquing, or gallery hopping starting with nearby Paradise Studio. L.L.Bean and other outlets are just an hour away in Freeport.

About Mary Ellen
When I purchased the family summer property, it needed complete revamping! I alternated a month in Colorado and a month in Boothbay while Paradise Cottage (my grandmother's summer house) was winterized and expanded, and Seanook (the vacation house of my childhood) was practically torn down and rebuilt. The early March morning after I arrived the final time to stay, I met Ron, who was working for my contractor on Seanook. Since then we have done all the work around the place ourselves. The following winter we built a scale model of our future shop/studio on the diningroom table and broke ground in August of 2000.
Mary Ellen purchased this cottage in 1997
Why Mary Ellen chose Boothbay Harbor
Seanook was purchased by my mother, a native Mainer, in 1947. At the time it was nothing more than a tiny three month summer bungalow, but as a child I loved the spot and everything about it . It was my life-long dream to return here to live. Now Ron and I stay on the property year-round. Every season is our favorite! We are forever changing and improving wherever we can. In everything we do we try to maintain some of the rustic seaside character of the place, and imbue it with our own personalities and creative curves.
What makes this cottage unique
To wake up every morning to the call of seabirds and songbirds and the quiet lapping of little waves, the varying moods of the ocean, the view towards the head of the bay with the sun creeping down that opposite shore, and the verdant Maine woods around is about as close to ideal as one can get and then to be bathed in fresh salt air all day long and to have that long view across the water right here for the looking any time gives one that relaxed 'aaah' feeling.
Guestbook comments from the owner
I've been coming to Seanook for ten years from Boston, Austin, and New Jersey with family and friends from LA, DC, North Carolina and NYC.
We come for the peace, the view, the birds, the boats, the smells, the shells, the seaglass and of course a daily dose of fresh lobster. Our rituals include walking the rocks at Ocean Point, cinnamon buns from the General Store, walking through the 'path' to the other shore with its lovely hidden lake, fresh lobster from the Co-op, and sitting on every deck and reading. Highlights over the years are shooting stars (so many stars), blue heron, the seal swimming under the deck, and moon rise.
Our hosts are gracious and its the experience and simple joys of this special place that keep me coming back - not fancy surroundings or needs.
